All that I’m trying to say now is just that I love you…

Sometimes all you need to say is something as complex, and as simple, as “I love you.” Yet just as there is nothing simple about love, there is nothing simple about Big Fox’s latest single: Out Friday, “All I’m Trying” is a breathtakingly confessional, raw folk song of love full of connection, depth, and emotional surrender.

I don’t know what it is I try to say to you
I don’t know what it is I try to prove
But I can feel it through the phone, you see it all
Sometimes I wish that I could hide from you
All that I’m trying to say
now is just that I love you
You’ve taught me more than
I ever could dream of, it’s true

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “All I’m Trying,” the fourth single off Big Fox’s forthcoming sophomore album, See How the Light Falls (out March 20, 2020). Produced by Tom Malmros (Alice Boman), “All I’m Trying” symbolizes a significant emotional return: Malmö, Sweden-based Charlotta Perers — the artist behind the name — originally intended to release See How the Light Falls in May 2018, but “a few weeks before the album was supposed to be released, I was diagnosed with lymphoma,” she explains.

“It all happened very quickly and it was almost like entering a parallel world with a different time scale, rules and priorities. Life suddenly became very intense, very here and now – but that amplified positive experiences too. But it felt good to know that the album was waiting for me on the other side. It was a reminder of something else, the someone I was outside the hospital.”

Eighteen months later, Perer says she is “slowly reclaiming my life back;” this album is back on schedule, and the wait for new music is now over. “All I’m Trying” arrives on the heels of previous singles “Final Call,” “Sad Eyes,” and “The Fight” — all of which were released in the first half of 2018, and exhibit a range of musical influences ranging from synthpop to folk. Unlike these other tracks, “All I’m Trying” is utterly bare: It is as intimate as a song possibly gets, largely featuring Perers singing alongside her guitar (with a backing band easing in on the song’s second half). A light, lilting folksy melody line guides Perers’ guitar and voice as she undergoes a transformative upheaval in front of our eyes and ears, shedding all pretense through beautiful, haunting poetry.

But sometimes I don’t really see you as you are
No I get rational and hard , I do
But always when I go to far, you get that look
And turn my head, so I can see the truth

“Some songs are hard to write about,” Big Fox tells Atwood Magazine. “They just move like a slow train, as if they had no intention of causing any big fuss or drama. But they are sincere, honest. Every word is carefully selected, every synthesizer questioned. And the more time you spend with them, the more you start loving them. That’s how I feel about ‘All I’m Trying.’”

A naked and honest love song, “All I’m Trying” finds Big Fox at the peak of her songwriting caliber and efficacy.

The song is all-encompassing, yet light and full of space to move; it’s a breath of fresh air, sweet yet subtle, somber yet bright. “All I’m Trying” is a memorable and moving return for Big Fox, an artist we should all be paying close attention to in 2020. Stream her new single exclusively on Atwood Magazine, and stay tuned for more from this emerging talent: See How the Light Falls is out March 20, 2020.
