Unexpected encounters can change everything: In an instant, your entire life can change. Newcomer singer/songwriter Benjamin Roustaing dives into the depths of uncertainty and emotional strife in “When You Love Someone Else,” an intimate diary-worthy upheaval.

It’s complicated I know
This part of me you don’t know
The thoughts I’m thinking alone
That I don’t ever want you to find out
There’s a cloud on mind
It’s so hard to define
Yet so easy to find
But I don’t ever want you to find out

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “When You Love Someone Else,” Benjamin Roustaing’s heartfelt fourth single release. Based in Stockholm, the British / French pop-folk artist introduced himself to the world last year through his solemn debut “Wait,” following earlier this year with the lilting “Old Days” and most recently, the effervescent “Beautiful Lie.”

“When You Love Someone Else” is Roustaing’s first heart-on-sleeve outpouring since his debut, and a massive one at that. “Have you ever been in a situation where you’re in a relationship, and everything is going well for the most part; but then a complete stranger enters your life one day and everything about them feels right, everything is in sync, it’s like you’ve known this person for years and yet it’s only been a few hours?” Roustaing tells Atwood Magazine. “That’s where this song comes from, this unexpected encounter leaving you to question your current relationship, these thoughts you shouldn’t be having, and yet here you are at 5 AM thinking about exactly that.”

“When You Love Someone Else” is largely self-explanatory in its explanation of a inner turbulence and torn love’s haunting spectre. Roustaing sings passionately from the bridge into an overwhelmingly vulnerable chorus:

‘Cause all you know
Is coffee in the morning
just like when we were falling
But you don’t know
What I’ve been thinking
Can you love someone
when you love someone else
Cos my mind is getting blurry
and I can’t think of nothing else
Why do you want something
when you got something else
Yeah it’s true what people say,
it keeps on fucking with your health
When you love someone else

The artist’s falsetto shimmers against bright guitars in a pool of warm sonic ambience. His pain resonates through his sweet falsetto; whereas another singer might make the song about them and their own struggle, Roustaing moves us to empathize with his situation as he shows regret, self-doubt, and sorrow for the situation – especially for the two love interests now clouding his heart and mind.

“When You Love Someone Else” shows Benjamin Roustaing to be an evocative, expressive singer/songwriter brimming with emotion and intent on channeling his full, authentic self through his music; we cannot wait to hear more from his promising talent in the future.
