The mistakes you wish you didn’t make, and the apologies that are often too late to be accepted make Dave C. Rupert’s latest single, “Cold.”

When you’re lost and you don’t know entirely who you are or what you want, you’re likely to make mistakes. One wrong choice leads to another and before you know it you’re in a tangled mess that cannot be undone. It’s only human to take different paths when you’re unsure of who you are, but it’s what you leave in the wake that often haunts you at night. Dave C. Rupert puts it best when describing his latest single, “‘Cold‘ is kind of like an apology lullaby about mistakes.”

I know I’ve been cradled on the floor
And all my troubles seep through your front door
Oh, you’re still the one that I’ll look for
So turn round and settle down in snow
Turn round and tell me you still know, ‘cause I don’t

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Cold,” the second release from Manchester singer/songwriter Dave C. Rupert’s upcoming debut EP. Dreamy guitar licks kick off the story of “Cold.” Rupert’s voice enters crisp, deep, clean and clear to open with the first verse,

I know I’ve been cradled on the floor
And all my troubles seep through your front door

The lyric eloquently portrays how ones personal problems can so easily affect those around them, even without them knowing at first. It’s those issues that seep into others lives that create the mistakes Rupert is singing about. The guitar lick continues, slow and steady, shifting from major to minor chords adding a welcoming note of drama. Rupert sings the chorus, the part where we can empathize, the part that lets the audience know he didn’t mean to make these mistakes, and he truly is just doing the best that he can – something we can all relate to,

Oh I’m just a winter gone by
That your head cast aside
No I’m not a trick of the mind
So take me in from outside
Or leave me cold

The final verse cruises through as a slight replica of the first, reinforcing the message that he cannot get this person out of his head, and although he is still lost and confused, it is not this person he is lost and confused about,

I know I’ve been cradled on the floor
And all my troubles seep through your front door
Oh, you’re still the one that I adore
So turn round and settle down in snow
Turn round and tell me you still know, ‘cause I don’t

A tale all too familiar told in a melancholy way (which makes it all the more relatable). Rupert has made his mistakes, it’s not that he is resolving the fact that he is now at peace with these mistakes, but instead, he is still a little bit lost and wondering where to go from here. It’s refreshing to not have the ending tied up in a neat bow, but yet to have it as life usually is, an ongoing, confusing, happy and sad, journey.
