Ethansroom’s new song reflects one of the hardest things you can do in life: Let go of someone you love. A poignant indie folk lullabye, “To Geneva” resonates with heartfelt understanding as the artist struggles to accept a sad situation and move on with grace.

Hotel room’s
Too quiet she says
Play some tunes
For me darlin’
Talk to you
Until you’re off to bed
Until you’re off to bed

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “To Geneva,” the lead single off ethansroom’s upcoming debut album To, From (independently out May 4, 2018). A vibrant lo-fi exploration of folk, ethansroom is the solo project and artist moniker for 21-year-old Ethan Fortenberry, a Nashville-based university student who balances school while making music in his bedroom. “Your room is the only place that truly sees your everything; it’s the place you bring everything back to when the day’s said and done, and the place that sees your most honest and visceral self,” Fortenberry says of his name – and indeed, ethansroom proves a powerfully intimate endeavor.

“To Geneva” swells with delicate acoustic guitar strums as ethansroom reflects on a moment of meaningful, if brief, connection.

Wakin’ up
Up to back home
To Geneva
Outside Chicago
Think out loud
To get some rest
To clear your head

Wearing his heart like a badge, ethansroom weaves a vulnerable tale of rest and anxiety, change and self-reflection through ethereal layers of warm acoustic depth. “‘To Geneva’ documents a conversation I had over text with this girl. She was on her way back home and needed to clear her head,” Ethan Fortenberry tells Atwood Magazine. “I missed her. The hotel room she got was lonely and quiet she said, and so I tried to write a little tune for her to pass the time by for the both of us.”

“To Geneva” constantly builds; cellos and electric guitars provide evocative depth as the artist hums sweet harmonies, moaning softly atop a poignant bed of sound. He explains, “In her going home to clear her head, I also cleared mine. It’s about finding a balance in things once everything’s on the table. I knew that if she cleared her head like she set out to do, then it would be evident that I wouldn’t be in the picture. The last stanza reads:

Miss you much
Don’t know if I should
To hell with it
I knew I, knew I would
So come back soon
and sing the songs you shed
with your cleared head

It’s about wanting there to be a mutual honesty and balance between two people, even if that means not getting what you came for.”

“To Geneva” is, at its core, a bittersweet goodbye – that final farewell to the relationship that never quite worked out. Lush and wondrous, it’s an exciting new offering from the young artist; we cannot wait for what’s next. Stream “To Geneva” exclusively on Atwood Magazine and join in ethansroom’s lilting, emotional wanderlust. His debut album To, From is independently out May 4, 2018.
