The best way to start fresh is by actually wiping our slates clean, which in turn means leaving the demons and devils of our pasts behind us. Singer/songwriter Kate Kelly sets her sights on a bright and promising new chapter in her elevating single “The Book We Made,” an uplifting farewell full of groovy goodness.

I’m burning the book we made
I’m letting our story fade
It started with a phrase and then it grew
Two troubled little hearts became a novel
Called me and you
Setting fire to the good old days
Forgetting the summer where we strayed
Letting go off all our precious dreams
And ripping each chapter from its seams

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the Joey Brodnax-directed music video for “The Book We Made,” the opening track off Kate Kelly’s 2018 debut album The Wonder of It All, released nearly a year ago to this day on October 26, 2018. A Nashville-based singer/songwriter hailing from Mobile, Alabama, Kelly has been wearing her heart on her musical sleeve well before her 2016 debut. That powerful characteristic reveals itself in the artist’s intimate and vulnerable music, much of which captures heavy topics with a lilting charm.

As she bids a heartfelt goodbye to the baggage and ghosts of her past in “The Book We Made,” Kelly dazzles listeners with a bright, bouncy jam sprinkled with brass horns, flirts of the keyboard, and warm vocal harmonies.

I’m gonna throw away the book we made
I’m tearing out the pages
Blacking out the spaces that say your name
I’ll throw away the book we made
I’m lighting all the matches
Kicking up the ashes
And going my separate way
I’m burning the book we made

For Kelly, this song is personal. “Nashville has been home for over seven years now,” she tells Atwood Magazine. “I’ve lived in places all over the city. During a move a couple years ago, I was packing boxes and thinking about the things we take with us and the things we leave behind as we enter a new phase of life. I thought about the people we hold on to and the people we would be better off letting go. I sat down on the empty floor of my old room and wrote this song. ‘The Book We Made’ is an anthem for letting go of the people and things that keep us from being our truest selves.”

‘The Book We Made’ is an anthem for letting go of the people and things that keep us from being our truest selves.

Directed by the talented Joey Brodnax (Zander Hawley, Corey Kilgannon, and more), Kelly’s “The Book We Made” music video places her right in a local library, and vividly captures both the physical and emotional act of throwing away parts of one’s past. “There is a bookstore in my neighborhood that is very special to me. It’s called Rhino Book Sellers and it’s one of Nashville’s best kept secrets,” Kelly explains. “I’ve always loved the way the aisles of books weave through the store like a maze, containing the narratives of so many writers’ imaginations. As I went to find a book one day, it occurred to me that the store was the perfect place for a music video. I ran the idea by my director, Joey Brodnax, and my videographer, Drew Bauml, and we decided as a team to make the store the canvas for our vision. The video weaves through tunnels of books and plays with gravity to symbolize the ever-changing and often mind-boggling nature of relationships.”

In the smoke I write goodbye
In the flames I say goodnight
And when I get down to the heart of it
It was all just lovesick rhetoric
I’m gonna throw away the book we made
I’m tearing out the pages
Blacking out the spaces that say your name
I’ll throw away the book we made
I’m lighting all the matches
Kicking up the ashes
And going my separate way
I’m burning the book we made

Throughout the video, audience members might notice references to or images of the moon – a special symbol for Kate Kelly: “The moon is a motif throughout my debut album, The Wonder of It All,” she shares.”The release of this video is the album’s one year anniversary. We included the moon throughout the video to tie the song back to its origins on the album.”

While this video is coming out here and now in 2019, there is no denying the song’s heritage as it stands opening Kate Kelly’s debut album. Stream the music video exclusively on Atwood Magazine, but also be sure to go back and listen to The Wonder of It All, a record sure to put us in a good mood – not to mention, help us turn the page and start fresh.
