Premiere: The Refreshing Spark of Area Resident’s “Riverside”

Delano - Area Resident

Brash guitars and furious melodies, waxing nostalgic while looking forward: Ottawa-based indie rocker Area Resident has got it all. The artist’s latest release “Riverside” is a potent, driving piece of alternative glory that begs for repeat listens.

There’s no place like home by the riverside
Have your hands touched like ours
Outside ourselves
But will you leave it alone?
Just leave it alone
For once

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Riverside,” the lead single off Area Resident’s upcoming sophomore album Delano (independently out November 3, 2017). The solo project of CBC Ottawa traffic reporter Doug Hempstead, Area Resident offers a refreshingly upbeat spark of alternative rock perfect for long and short commutes alike. “Riverside” reintroduces the full vitality of his artistry; produced by Jordon Zadorozny, the track brings to light Area Resident’s powerful melodies and evocative guitar work, pulling listeners into the songwriter’s warm dreams of past and present.

Riverside – Area Resident

There’s no place like home by the riverside
When you leave and you
breathe and you take

All your time
But will you leave it alone?
Just leave it alone
For once

“This track in particular is inspired by the home I grew up in along the Ottawa River in Pembroke,” shares Hempstead. “It’s mostly about all the mistakes you make and how you never want to admit to learning from them.” Billowing guitars and massive drum-led buildups resolve in glorious explosions of colorful energy as Hempstead reflects on prior times.

It’s catchy, it’s pulsing, and it’s a fantastic jam.

Join Area Resident and wrap yourself in the warmth of yesterday’s blanket, if only for a short while. “Riverside” offers a particularly great glimpse of what we can expect from Delano, out in just one month’s time!
