“I want to show you, that I am flying” describes the freedom you can have when you say what’s truly in your heart.

While there’s a time and place for injecting complexity, nuance, and metaphor into so many life situations (I wouldn’t be editor-in-chief of Atwood Magazine if I didn’t believe this), simplicity does reign supreme sometimes. When an artist cuts out all the noise and does away with the fluff, what’s left often tends to perfectly capture a moment in time, speaking volumes without explicitly stating everything outright. Indie singer/songwriter Serendipity opts for a less-is-more approach to vulnerability in her intimate third single “Flying,” a song about falling in love.

I… want to know you
And I… want to show you
How I feel… but I want to hide away
Yeah I… want to go
And hide away
Hide away

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Flying,” the third release from Southern California-based Serendipity and the latest off her forthcoming debut album Honey, independently out January 11, 2020. Debuting earlier this September with the confessional song “My Own Queen,”  which was followed by the heart-one-sleeve acoustic number “So Wise” in October, Serendipity has introduced herself as a raw and honest storyteller with a couple hot takes on love and loss, and a penchant for spilling out her innermost thoughts and feelings through song.

“I wrote ‘Flying’ while I was dating this man who I was falling in love with, and I didn’t know how to tell him, so I wrote this song and played it for him, and then we talked,” Serendipity tells Atwood Magazine. “The talking didn’t go exactly as I wanted but I said… well… sang, what I needed to say.”

A low, naked electric guitar humbly strums a few chords as Serendipity sings to the one she loves. Her voice is center stages, a delicate and crystalline source of warmth, desire and connection. Casually and directly, she opens herself up to her would-be significant other, exposing her innermost insecurities and telling both herself and her subject that she won’t let fear or doubt get in the way:

I…won’t let this fear stop me
From opening up
To what I’m wanting
And if it’s not right
I can always handle more sleepless nights
And I… want to know you
And I… want to show you
That I…
I am Flying
Oh yeah I…
I am Flying
My heart
Is afraid of exposing
So my mouth
Just sits here frozen
I seem to know where I see this going
(Be)cause these feelings,
oh these feelings, oh these feelings
Seem to keep growing

“‘Flying’ is about being vulnerable, and honest about how you feel towards someone, no matter the outcome, because it feels a lot worse to hold it in,” Serendipity explains. ““I want to show you, that I am flying” describes the freedom you can have when you say what’s truly in your heart.”

Finding the person who completes you is hard enough; once you think you know who they are, actually telling them how you feel is an even bigger mountain to climb. What if they don’t feel that way right now, and telling them how you feel ruins everything?! What if holding it in just a little while longer means they will fall in love with you, too? Will this always be a one-sided affair of the heart?

Serendipity overcomes all of these obstacles to expose the love she feels toward another, accepting the uncertain outcome of her confession but knowing she needs to speak her truth and share her emotions. No matter the individual outcome, “Flying” resonates as a raw rendering of heartfelt intimacy. It’s a sweet, subtle take on the immediacy and urgency of budding love.
