I feel like it’s an honest opening into me releasing original music. I hope people can relate somehow.

Some of the best love songs are the ones whose subjects will never know them; they’re expressions of unrequited love, sung into an emotional void that eats them up and swallows them whole. Such is the case for Andy Cortes’ debut single: A touching, emotional indie folk upheaval, “Vaporised” captures the beauty and fragility of fleeting love – a connection that came and went too fast for lights to spark, or for embers to give rise to a bustling flame.

You don’t know me much
But can I tell you something real close?
You broke my heart and you didn’t even know
But I was swinging in the dark
So I couldn’t really come clean
But I fancied you hard
You know what I mean
I guess it’s all up In the air now
I guess it’s all up in the air now
Vaporised
I made a rain cloud
I guess it’s all up in the air now

Released May 28, 2021 via Kin Records (REUNIØN, Gabriella Cilmi, Archie Faulks, Banfi), “Vaporised” is a beautiful, haunting debut single. Surrey-based Andy Cortes has been touring as a part of James Bay’s live band for some time, but his solo debut as a singer/songwriter is a magnificently stirring work of finesse and feeling. Aching guitar lines unleash a flood of emotions as Cortes sings a soft, gently spellbinding song of what we quickly realize is unrequited love.

His lyrics express the intense thrill of that special connection, juxtaposed against the radiating pain of letting go and not realizing that romance seen through. Whatever potential love could have been, it will never be; “Vaporised” pays tribute to the what-if, finding Cortes singing sweetly, “I guess it’s all up In the air now… Vaporised, I made a rain cloud, I guess it’s all up in the air now.

You don’t know me much
So can I tell you something real close?
I’d die for you, come rain sun or snow
But we’re rolling down a river
Where the water falls steep
You’ll never know, how much you mean to me
I guess it’s all up In the air now
I guess it’s all up in the air now
Vaporised
I made a rain cloud
I guess it’s all up in the air now

“I wrote ‘Vaporised’ whilst on tour in 2018 playing guitar with James Bay,” Cortes tells Atwood Magazine. “I remember meeting somebody, and unbeknownst to them I quite liked them. ‘Vaporised’ was a way of articulating how I felt without being too specific. It existed only to me at the time, and still does! Being able to frame these type of emotions through writing songs allows me to reflect on periods of my life. It’s a very simple song, and I hope people can relate somehow. That’d be cool.”

A breathtakingly vulnerable moment of truth and loss, “Vaporised” is a fantastic introduction.

Blending his acoustic and electric guitars into an expressive, evocative soundscape, Andy Cortes’ debut single glows with a warm, heartfelt light. His voice yearns for the unknown as his lyrics lament this lost chance at a deeper connection. Whether listeners have loved and lost, or liked and never turned that into “something more,” we can all relate to the sense of our desires (and feelings) being “all up in the air now.

Ultimately, it’s Cortes’ ability to transform this ephemeral love – a passing fancy – into a musical waterfall of emotion that makes this song, and his burgeoning artistry, so compelling.

“Vaporised” is out now on Kin Records.
