We have all had moments of crushing pain, fear, insecurity, and self-doubt; life has a curious way of hurling an array of obstacles our way, and it’s just a natural part of this curious human experiment that we must learn to be strong, overcome, and persevere. British newcomer Azadeh captures inner strength and vigor in her debut single “The Cure,” a heartfelt song of healing, self-discovery, and becoming.

The Cure – Azadeh
My heart has been kept in the dark for too long
My light has been dimmed: flickers cradled in my arms
My truth is in the water that leaks from my palms
My head in one hand with one arm to the ground
And I’m banging
1,2,3, will you let me in?
Don’t leave me hanging
4,5,6, I’m sick I need some
medicine, medicine, medicine

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the lyric video for “The Cure,” Azadeh’s debut single (independently released August 18, 2020). A rising West London-based singer/songwriter, Azadeh has a wealth of touring experience opening and supporting acts like Robert Cray, Jools Holland, Melanie C, Deacon Blue and Status Quo. She has also spent recent years performing alongside Faithless frontman Maxi Jazz and his new band. “I must confess to significant bias as I’ve been benefiting from her enormous talent for some years,” Jazz recently shared, going on to call “The Cure” a  “searing solo debut.”

“The Cure” is polished yet raw, a powerfully feverish upheaval that showcases the artist’s profound vocal range and emotive depth. Dazzling electro-pop production puts Azadeh’s voice front and center, surrounding her with subtle, layered vocal harmonies and effervescent piano work that accentuates her vocal prowess. She rises triumphantly in her chorus:

Now I see this is the only remedy
This is the antidote I need
This is the cure to my disease
Now I see this is the rhythm that I bleed
This is the music that I breathe
This is the cure to my disease

“’The Cure’ is a healing song close to my heart and that is why I’ve chosen it as my debut single,” Azadeh tells Atwood Magazine. “It is a song I wrote about overcoming fear, a crushing sense of self-doubt, betrayal and getting out of your head and quietly going deep within in your darkest moment to truly listen to the contrasting utter simplicity of what your soul craves. It is an ode to all those who are close to giving up on their dreams, who then realise that you can never ever give up on your creativity. For the flickers of faith will always be there, no matter how many times your ego sabotages or shuts the door on you; no distractions or ignoring your soul’s calling will take away from the only thing that can Cure you of your fear of success or failure. I went through the process of shedding so many layers before I could be born into my new-found sense of worth, realising the music is still intrinsically within me and is now more powerful than ever.”

The emotion and power in Azadeh’s voice captures the soul-stripped vulnerability in her lyrics; one gets the sense, in hearing her words come to life, that she had to take a hard, long look in the mirror in order to let this song out. Sometimes it’s the most difficult situations that birth the most wondrous pieces of art; that certainly is the case here:

Parasites came at night and filled me with dread
A woman alive: but a soul left for dead
Now the truth is at the altar, to this temple I am bound
My head in one hand with one arm to the ground
And I’m banging
1,2,3, will you let me in?
Don’t leave me hanging
4,5,6, I’m sick I need some
medicine, medicine, medicine
Now I see this is the only remedy
This is the antidote I need
This is the cure to my disease
Now I see this is the rhythm that I bleed
This is the music that I breathe
This is the cure to my disease
