Hauntingly intimate and sonically fragile, BUKVE’s debut single is a chillingly beautiful, if not heartbreaking, introduction. The Norwegian artist sets a breathtakingly bittersweet tone in “Let me go son” (featuring Firewoodisland), a poignant and raw upheaval of loss set to soothing electrofolk that stirs the heart and mind alike.

Let me go Son – BUKVE
In a suit of wool, the air feels so full.
I feel the cold and gray
When I dream I run the distance.
But when I close my eyes
I can hear you say
Let me go, son, you’e not alone
Let me go, son, life is your own
Let me go, son, you’e not alone
Let me go, son, your heart is your own

Released August 13, 2021, “Let me go Son” is subdued, yet expansive; cinematic, yet inescapably ethereal. Hitting hard, it makes a powerful and instantly memorable debut for BUKVE, the solo project of Bergen, Norway-based songwriter Sveinung Fossan Bukve (Secret Treehouse, Vöödöö). Featuring UK-based duo (and Atwood artist-to-watch) Firewoodisland and production/mixing by Stamos Koliousis, “Let me go Son” recalls the likes of Volcano Choir and early Bon Iver, as well as more recent up-and-coming contemporaries like Novo Amor, SYML, and REUNIØN: BUKVE crafts an intricate, evocative soundscape characterized by dark, intimately sung whispers contrast against guitars, keys, and a vast, lush wall-of-sound backdrop that rises and falls with a passion that is all its own.

Bold, understated music like this often evokes a sense of majesty and wonder, rising from soft depths in search of unknown heights. “Let me go Son” is no different; the song rises with nuanced energy to reach a heavy, expressive climax filled with visceral emotion as, together with vocals and a steel guitar performance from Firewoodisland, BUKVE explores (or rather, reflects on) the lines between connection and loss, life and death, togetherness, presence, and absence.

Proud to call you mine
Buried in my bones.
I feel the hymn of time
Emotions Ieft behind
No one’s better all alone
Don’t carry all the weight
Hear me when I say…

“I am thrilled to be releasing my first single, ‘Let me go Son,’ together with the amazing Firewoodisland,” BUKVE tells Atwood Magazine. “After writing the song I almost immediately could hear their voices on it, and luckily they wanting to contribute. I really respect them, and what they have achieved so far. ‘Let me go Son’ is a very emotional song for me, and to cut it short, it’s about hearing my late father telling me to ‘let him go,’ not letting his passing take so much place in my life anymore, and me telling my son (Elliot, he is 9 months) to let me go when the time is right.”

“‘Live your own life, you don’t have to walk in my footsteps.’ It is the first single from my upcoming debut album, and I will have collabs on a few of them, but I will also sing myself on some of them. Really depends on the song. After playing in bands for so long, I really enjoy being the able to let each song decide if I need to bring in external musicians. I work closely with friend and producer, Stamos Koliousis, and visual designer, Achilleas Gatsopoulos has done the cover art. The cover is based on an old drawing my Great Grandma did of my father. Mastering legend Big Bass Brian Gardner has mastered the song.”

Let me go, son, you’e not alone
Let me go, son, life is your own
Let me go, son, you’e not alone
Let me go, son, your heart is your own

An atmospheric experience in their own right, Firewoodisland’s Stian Vedøy and Abi Eleri help add their own signature sound to BUKVE’s debut, but it’s ultimately the coalescence of somber, meaningful sentiments and catchy, cathartic music that makes “Let me go Son” so utterly beguiling.

A touching, tranquilizing three-minute immersion, “Let me go Son” is as much a reminder to live in the present as it is a plea to let things go, when their time comes: Don’t let the past be a burden. “Don’t carry all the weight… Let me go, son, life is your own.”

It’s a poignant, sobering message wrapped in radiant electrofolk that rises and falls gracefully, ultimately leaving us in a sort of trance as we contemplate our own existence, and what it means to be here and now.
