There’s often little we can do when a loved one is in tears; sometimes, the best course of action and the best way to be there for them, is to give them the space they need to let it all out. Such is the sentiment of CUT_’s new single, an emotionally pained and sonically buoyant track: Brimming with empathy and compassion, “Cry” aches with heartfelt tenderness as CUT_ return to the fore with a catchy, empathic bit of polished electropop.

Cry – CUT_
Won’t you forget these little voices in your head
They just keep you from trying
They just make you cry cry cry
Sad is your touch but I love you so much
And now I’m dying
Because you cry cry cry
Shed another tear in the kitchen
Make yourself sad on the bathroom floor
I know that you don’t wanna listen
But you can’t runaway from your own voice
Shed another tear in the kitchen
Make yourself sad on the bathroom floor
I know that you don’t wanna listen
But you can’t runaway from your own voice

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Cry,” CUT_’s first original offering since February 2019’s debut album A Small Group of Individuals ([PIAS] Recordings). The electronic music duo from Amsterdam, Sebastiaan Dutilh and Belle Doron’s CUT_ have been actively mesmerizing our ears since they first introduced themselves in 2014. Six years later, their journey continues with a big electropop outpouring whose dance beat is second only to Belle Doron’s moving vocals. She demands attention from the room in the song’s impassioned chorus:

I’ll be waiting here
When you’re done crying
Cause I’m powerless, powerless
When you’re sad
I’ll be waiting right here
When you’re done crying
Cause I’m powerless, powerless
When you’re sad
I’ll be waiting here

“When someone close to you falls into an overwhelming sadness there’s nothing you can do besides just being there,”  CUT_ tell Atwood Magazine. “They will have to fight their inner demons themselves. The only thing you can do is be there, waiting. Showing them there is a way out through all the tears. “Cry” describes the powerlessness of being in this position and the importance of friendship and perseverance. We get a lot of response to our music from fans who are struggling with depression or heartbreak. Many people criticise the current online world, yet ignore that besides a lot of negativity there is real beauty in the way people can express themselves online and get to communicate their inner worlds and emotions which they would otherwise find too hard to voice out there in the real world. We’ve never had a better insight into other human beings that we do now. I can tell how my friends are feeling by how visible – or even how invisible – they are online. Sometimes someone is being quieter than usual, putting on a happy face or even overcompensating with heavily positive messages. I can tell they’re sad and I just let them know I’m here. Whenever you’re ready for it I’m here. I don’t have to be in the same room to recognise the way they feel.”

“Cry” is ultimately a song about being there. Not only is it a song for those who know what it’s like to feel helpless as a loved one’s support, but also it’s a well into which folks may pour their emotions. It’s an emotional release valve – a track that reminds us that we’re not alone, and that we’re allowed to feel helpless or hopeless, powerless and drained. Pouring our hearts out in such effervescent song, we come away from CUT_’s latest number refreshed and renewed. All we needed was a good “Cry.”
