It’s about focusing on the small things when you cannot control the big things.

Life can all too often overwhelm us, and when it does, there’s nothing like a loved one’s presence to help us out and see us through. Whether it’s a listening ear, advise to refocus on the present, or simply a reminder to take some deep breaths, that support goes a long, long way – and it’s that kind of heartfelt, caring empathy that shines through on Annie Hamilton’s latest single. A dreamy indie rock anthem of connection and support, “Exist” finds Hamilton dwelling in a space of intimacy and vulnerability as she offers an outstretched hand to those who need a friend.

Exist - Annie Hamilton
Exist – Annie Hamilton
Well soon you’ll come downstairs
to tell me everything you dreamt

The other night you cried
and said that you were tired of this
You don’t want to exist anymore
You said you don’t want to exist anymore
You’re waiting, patient, on the train as it derails
You’re crying quietly on my couch
First day of autumn
Feel it in the breeze
I wish that I could make this easier
I wish that I could make this easier

Unleashed on August 10, 2021 via [PIAS] Australia, “Exist” arrives as Annie Hamilton’s first single of the year. The followup to 2020’s self-titled debut EP finds the Eora/Sydney-based musician, visual artist and fashion designer radiating passion and charged energy: It’s potent combination whose feverish overdriven guitars, dynamic drum beats, and soaring vocals long for a cathartic release. “I wish that I could make this easier,” Hamilton sings softly at the end of the second verse; sometimes, being there and being present is the best thing you can do for them, even if it doesn’t feel like a fix, and even if it doesn’t feel like much at the time.

You cannot sleep but please keep dreaming
Even though I know it seems like everything has fallen to pieces
Soon enough the pendulum will swing
Soon enough the sunlight will stream in
Soon enough the pendulum will swing

“I wrote this song in the middle of lockdown last year,” Annie Hamilton tells Atwood Magazine, “about someone very close to me who was going through a difficult time. It’s about focusing on the small things when you cannot control the big things.”

“Exist” continues building and building throughout its three-minute run; while the end of the song does eventually reach a sort of emotional and sonic crescendo, there’s no definitive chorus to let it all out beforehand. Instead, the tension grows to a fever pitch and eventually spills over with dramatic, wondrous fury.

A song of love and listening, of compassion and understanding, “Exist” is about showing up: It’s about being there for the moments that matter. It’s a sweet, stirring alt-rock beacon of light and hope coming at a time when many of us need it most.

I’ll be waiting just outside
(Soon enough the pendulum will swing)
I’ll be waiting just outside
(Soon enough the sunlight will stream in)
I’ll be waiting just outside
(Soon enough the pendulum will swing)
I’ll be waiting just outside
I picked you roses from the lakeside
