Listen: “1-800-LOVE” – FlOOR CRY

Listening to Felicia Sekundiak’s latest release “1-800-LOVE” evokes the feeling of first date jitters, handwritten love letters, and the electrifying feelings of hopefulness, possibility, and excitement that accompany new love. Catchy, youthful, and glittery, the Manitoba based dream-pop singer, better known as FLOOR CRY, knows how to create a track that will be on replay until Valentine’s Dayーand after.

Sekundiak admitted in a 2018 interview with The Fordham Ram that she builds her lyrics largely around personal experience but believes her listeners “…can really interpret the lyrics in your own way and apply it to your own life. That’s what my main driving force behind making music is. I wanna be able to help people get through their own struggles because that’s what it’s always done for me. The first thing I always do when I’m upset or happy is put on music just to go with my mood or what I’m going through at the time. Sometimes I write little snippets of things in my phone and build a song around that but my music is mostly about my life or something that’s going on in the world.” “1-800-LOVE” is yet another FLOOR CRY tune that is sure to resonate with Sekundiak’s audience.

1-800-LOVE – FLOOR CRY

There’s a buoyancy to the beat that keeps the entire song feeling light. Sekundiak opens with an echo: “Hey!” The song’s title is modeled after a phone number, and starting the song with a greeting makes it clear that the song is about a phone conversation. She continues singing, “It’s just a matter of time // Before you finally reach me // I’ll put my heart on the line // And you can put yours too.” The lyrics are simple yet drenched in optimism. She believes it’s “just a matter of time” before the person she’s leaving a message for can “finally reach me,” which reveals how inevitable she believes their connection to be. The next lyrics offer a play on words as Sekundiak sings, “I’ll put my heart on the line // And you can put yours too.” By putting her heart on the line, she can be referring to the telephone line by making the call. But Sekundiak can also mean it more figuratively; by falling for this person, she’s putting her heart on the line and risking the possibility of getting hurt. She adds, “And you can put yours too.”

Hey!
It’s just a matter of time
Before you finally reach me
I’ll put my heart on the line
And you can put yours too

The next few lyrics are hopeful, as Sekundiak sings, “So c’mon give me a sign // And you can finally teach me // A feeling I can’t define // Maybe you’ll feel it too.” She’s cautiously optimistic, wanting her feelings to evolve into something more, but wants the person to provide her with a sign that they feel the same way. There’s a lot of emphasis on the mutuality of this connection, which is shown in the lyric, “Maybe you’ll feel it too.”

So c’mon give me a sign
And you can finally teach me
A feeling I can’t define
Maybe you’ll feel it too

The idea of a phone call comes up again in the chorus, and Sekundiak sings, “1-800-LOVE // 1-800-LOVE.” She continues with, “Hello you’ve reached the hotline // At the tone leave affection // I’ll do my best yeah I’ll try // To get right back to you.” These lyrics reveal how much she wants the person the song is about to give her a call and reciprocate the feelings she has for them.

FLOOR CRY

1-800-LOVE
1-800-LOVE
Hello you’ve reached the hotline
At the tone leave affection
I’ll do my best yeah I’ll try
To get right back to you

There’s a reiteration of wanting a sign with the next lyrics. Sekundiak repeats, “So c’mon give me a sign // Before we lose connection // And I’ll let you see me cry // And dance to my own tune.” Here, she makes it clear that she wants to know that the person feels the same about her as she does about them. She even mentions exposing her vulnerabilities to with, “I’ll let you see me cry.”

So c’mon give me a sign
Before we lose connection
And I’ll let you see me cry
And dance to my own tune

The song is dazzling, dizzying, and dreamy. It packages the feelings that come with falling in love into a poppy, upbeat tune that provides a glimpse into the world of FLOOR CRY’s music. “1-800-LOVE” will win hearts with just one listen.
