Being nostalgic doesn’t mean much to a youth, but the older we grow, the more meaningful that state of mind becomes. The more life there is to look back on, the more powerful our reflections become – hence, it may come as no surprise that in earnest’s wistful new song aches with poignant reverie and humble self-awareness. A moving pause upon turning 29 years old, “29” radiates with a heartfelt warmth and stirring intimacy as the emerging UK band leave their listeners spellbound, breathless, and shaken.

29 - in earnest
29 – in earnest
I wrote a letter to myself
So no one else would have to read it
It’s weighing heavy on my mind
I prayed to a god I don’t believe in
Recurring visions in my sleep
Tricycles and curbs of frustration
I heard Chester screaming loud
Arms aflame and ready to break
You never see it coming
Immortal ideas fade
I’m feeling so much older now
29 years today

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “29,” the third single from UK trio in earnest. An indie alternative band hailing from Southend-on-Sea in Essex, UK, in earnest is the powerful concoction of couple Sarah Holburn and Thomas Eatherton alongside Toby Shaer. The band introduced their subtle, subdued Phoebe Bridgers-meets-Daughter-cum-Noah Gundersen vibe earlier this year with debut single “put me under,” followed by “come upstairs” in July. “29” arrives as the band’s third overall single as they prepare to release their self-titled debut EP next month, October 7, 2020.

Produced and mixed by Peter Waterman of Longcroft Recording (Uriah Heep, Hattie Briggs), in earnest’s music is unapologetically intimate and honest: Their music’s themes range from reflections on being and nostalgia, to reconciling mental illness, to balancing hopelessness and hope, and more. “29” finds the group dwelling in pools of wistful daydreams; Written by Tom Eatherton on his 29th birthday, the song traverses childhood memories in chronological order, finding him quite literally delving into the life he’s lived and embracing good and bad, easy and hard times for what they were then, and what they mean now.

“The song is a collage of true stories that have shaped me, involving punching my dad at an ice rink (and regretting it), Chester Bennington and a friendly ghost,” Eatherton tells Atwood Magazine. “It reflects on tedious adulthood and holding onto a childlike thirst for adventure.”

Greenstick fracture at the wrist
Jumping cars out in the garden
European seaside town
Drowned in limoncello, heaving poison
Lost my cool down at the rink
Pinned to the wall for striking dad
Running absent from my parents
Dirty rag and oil, a concrete bed
You never see it coming
Immortal ideas fade
I’m feeling so much older now
29 years
You never see it coming
Strumming arthritis away
29 years today

Eatherton’s melancholy vocals and stripped-down electric guitar are sweetly reminiscent of Dizzy Up The Girl-era Goo Goo Dolls. The band dress up their song with dreamy strings, harmonies, and synths that add to the song’s ethereality: Its head is in the air, yet its feet are squarely on the ground. The band dream through muted colors here, yet theirs is nevertheless a dazzling tapestry – and one that invites multiple listens, whether you’re feeling high, low, or a happy mellow.

For some, this is sure to be a gateway into their own daydreams down memory lane; others may just indulge in the seductive instrumentals and beautiful harmonies. Regardless of how they get you, in earnest are sure to leave their listeners enchanted and ready for more.

Stream “29” exclusively on Atwood Magazine, and stay tuned for more from the UK band; their debut EP in earnest is out October 7, 2020!

Dragged away from all my friends
Calendar days stole my summer
I’d miss Matthew’s friendly ghost
Sunlight cured us of the shivers
Threw my shoes into the lake
When school was done, freedom celebrated
All the hills and valleys climbed
I never quite learned to tie my laces
You never see it coming
Immortal ideas fade
I’m feeling so much older now
29 years
You never see it coming
Strumming arthritis away
Stacking cutlery on my birthday
29 years today
