I know I’m doing fine on my own, but it could be kinda fun to fall in line with someone…

Indie pop artist Seint Monet opted for a soaring, sun-kissed 1970s vibe on her latest single,

and the result is a brightly shining outpouring of passion, hope, and possibility: Fun, feel-good, and achingly honest, the intimate “In Line and In Love” is a sweetly seductive flirtation with love. It’s a refreshing sonic palette inspired by pop’s past, whilst resoundingly rooted in the present – and a reminder that fads may come and go, but some music will never go out of style.

High out my mind on I-65
It’s better if you drive
So you take the wheel
Say that you got it from here
I’ve got the passenger vibe
Oo hoo, thinkin’ I’m in heaven
You’re a seven out of seven
Maybe that’s the best that I can get
Oo hoo, maybe I’ll regret this
But for now I’m feelin’ reckless
Even if it’s wrong, let’s pretend

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the Daniel Chaney and Kathryn Hurtado-directed music video for “In Line and In Love,” Seint Monet’s recently-released second single of 2021 (independently out June 4, 2021). Following April’s expressive, dynamic, and appropriately-titled “So Dramatic,” “In Line and In Love” finds the Nashville-based pop artist delving into love’s unknown depths with a smile and a glimmer of hope.

The artist moniker for Nashville-based singer/songwriter Colleen O’Donnell, Seint Monet has quickly sprung up as a vibrant and fast-growing indie pop presence. Her first two singles (August 2020’s “32 Degrees” and September’s “What Does It Mean”) were quickly followed up by the debut EP Bloom, which O’Donnell worked on with her friend, frequent collaborator, and fellow songwriter/producer Johnluke Lewis. Monet’s recent songs are the first teasers off an as-of-yet unannounced debut album (tentatively slated for early 2022); she plans to continue releasing singles throughout the year to build excitement and anticipation.

Self-describing as a “vivacious 20-something classically-trained pianist,” O’Donnell eschews genre and instead looks to her Seint Monet artistry as a wellspring of “dynamic, uncompromising, and honest” music.

“I feel as though a lot of artists are intimidated by the idea of “genre.” As an artist, it’s scary to think that your deepest emotions and thoughts can be categorized into a single word,” she tells Atwood Magazine. “When I began my artistry, the one thing I made clear to everyone involved is that my music isn’t going to follow a specific genre. If it’s a great song, I’m going to release it. Simple as that!”

On the topic of her sounds and vision, she adds, “My producer, Johnluke Lewis, and I have worked hard to create sounds original to Seint Monet. When it comes to production, we like to have a mix of synthetic sounds and live instruments in each song. Because I have that classical background, I’m pretty particular when it comes to what each instrument is playing. Luckily, both Johnluke and I are friends with a number of amazing instrumentalists. In the studio, we’ll have a day or two where we have several musicians come in for a few hours and lay down a bunch of different takes. Then, Johnluke and I will go through each take and either find a home for it or scrap it. It can be a tedious task that requires a lot of listening, but it’s worth it for that final product.”

O’Donnell’s “if it’s a great song, I’m going to release it” rule is simple and effective – and to that end, “In Line and In Love” is a great song. A wide-eyed, open-minded exploration of love and what it means to be in love, the song (and its accompanying music video) finds Seint Monet opening herself up with grace and poise. She offers a breathtaking display of vulnerability in an enchanting chorus: Those listening closely to her lyrics are sure to appreciate how ginger those first steps toward “love” always feel:

I know I’m doing fine on my own
But it could be kinda fun (could be kinda fun)
To fall in line with someone (fall in line and in love)
I know I’m doing fine on my own
But it could be kinda nice (could be kinda nice)
To fall in line with someone (fall in line and in love)

“The ’70s vibe of “In Line And In Love” wasn’t intentional,” O’Donnell explains. “When my producer, Johnluke Lewis, and I write, we typically start with an idea and let it flow; this session was no different. I had been feeling off the days leading up, and couldn’t really figure out why. My career was going great; I have a great supporting team; I live in a beautiful city… I felt like there was no reason not to be happy. But once I began writing the lyric ideas, I realized that I was missing the feeling of being in love. With that perspective in mind, we wrote the song quite quickly. I think “In Line And In Love” is a song that I had been wanting to write for awhile, but didn’t know how to say what I was feeling.”

Kiss in the parking lot on the hood of your car
At the same shitty bar
You taste like 2-for-1 beer, kinda nice, kinda weird
It feels like home when we’re here
Oo hoo, thinkin’ I’m in heaven
You’re a seven out of seven
Maybe that’s the best that I can get
Oo hoo, maybe I’ll regret this
But for now I’m feelin’ reckless

“As the song progressed and we produced it out, Johnluke (producer) and I and began to lean toward the ’70s vibe but made it contemporary. The direction offered us good ideas for visuals to create the mood board and story board for the video. I came across an image of the ’70s show “The Dating Game” and immediately knew that I wanted to model the music video after the show. We planned out the styling, set design, scripts, casting to mirror the it. We also incorporated actual audio clips from “The Dating Game” in the bridge of the song. It’s very subtle, but if you listen, you can hear one of the contestants asking a question!”

“‘In Line And In Love’ is definitely one of my favorite songs and videos I’ve released thus far. It’s fun and flirty, but if you listen closely to the lyrics, you realize it’s an extremely honest story. The songs I’ve been writing and releasing lately have encompassed “love.” I think I’m learning about, and figuring out how to navigate, love through these tracks!”

It’s fun and flirty, but if you listen closely to the lyrics, you realize it’s an extremely honest story.

Produced by Talk Nice Productions and directed by Daniel Chaney and Kathryn Hurtado, the “In Line And In Love” music video elevates the both song’s ’70s energy, as well as its uninhibited take on romance.

Mirroring The Dating Game, the film is staged in a retro hotel room in Nashville and features Matt Pellettiere as “Weatherman Ronald Rain” (contestant number 1), Parker Forbes as “Unemployed Guy Johnson” (contestant number 2), and Kelton Young as “Doctor Brad Jones” (contestant number 3). Johnluke Lewis plays the role of Rodney McGuire, the host of the fake television show “In Line & In Love,” O’Donnell plays the bachelorette, Seint Monet. It’s a cute music video that ultimately inspires us to get up and jump around our beds, and while she may not “find love” at the end of the song, Seint Monet has certainly left us spellbound and ready for more.

Nostalgic, groovy, and freshly exhilarating, “In Line and In Love” reaffirms Seint Monet’s rising talent.

Colleen O’Donnell has put her best work forward in a free-spirited adventure dipping its toes in the pool of love – that evergreen mixture of desire and connection, romance and passion, and so much more. Stream “In Line and In Love” exclusively on Atwood Magazine!
