We hope this track transports you to space and back – and also right next to Wayne Knight on the set of Jurassic Park.

Yes, Mattiel’s intoxicating new single is indeed focused on exactly the person you think: 6′ 4″ movie star Jeff Goldblum, star of such critically acclaimed films as Jurassic Park and Independence Day, whose decades-long career spans beyond the silver screen to include television, Broadway, and even music (Jeff Goldblum and the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra’s debut album released in 2018).

It’s not hard to understand the attraction one could have to a star of Goldblum’s caliber and pedigree, so while Mattiel may act a little light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek in song, the emotions are nonetheless present and palpable. A sweet and rockin’ ode to crushing hard, the dreamy “Jeff Goldblum” is a catchy surrender to our innermost desires.

Jeff Goldblum - Mattiel
Jeff Goldblum – Mattiel
He came and met me in the bathroom
A little like a younger Jeff Goldblum
About to take my heart and break it pretty soon
Hey, Hey,
what else was I supposed to do?
Hey, Hey,
I’d give it all away for you
Hey, Hey,
what else was I supposed to do?
Hey, Hey,
I’d give it all away for you

Released November 16, 2021 via ATO Records, “Jeff Goldblum” arrives this fall as the lead single off Mattiel’s forthcoming third album Georgia Gothic (out March 18, 2022 via ATO Records). The band’s first offering since April’s double-single “Those Words” / “Freedom Feels” is a delectable earworm full of crunchy guitars and radiant vocals.

The Atlanta, Georgia-based duo of Mattiel Brown and Jonah Swilley exude a lush, loving, and playfully prurient attitude in a song that marries their charismatic ’60s garage rock sound with inescapably charming pop melodies and structure. “Hey Hey!” Brown sings, inviting all to join her in a heated reverie. “What else was I supposed to do?… I’d give it all away for you.” Sunbaked and seductive, “Jeff Goldblum” is easy to fall for (how’s that for a PR statement, Mr. G?)

The song itself isn’t so much an ode to the man himself as it is a reflection on the artist’s feelings – with perhaps a bit of “what she’d do if given the chance” sprinkled in. “My crush on Jeff Goldblum is very real,” Mattiel Brown tells Atwood Magazine. “He inspired the words – but this is more of a dream where a Jeff lookalike meets me in a bathroom.”

“We hope this track transports you to space and back – and also right next to Wayne Knight on the set of Jurassic Park,” Swilley adds.

I didn’t take the time to listen to his name
So just for now I’ll call him Ichabod Crane
My Sleepy Hollow baby standing in the rain
Hey, Hey, what else was I supposed to do?
Hey, Hey, I’d give it all away for you
Hey, Hey, what else was I supposed to do?
Hey, Hey, I’d give it all away for you

Adding to the sense of fandom around this song is its visual accompaniment; Mattiel’s “official video” includes a montage of scenes from Goldblum’s movies Earth Girls Are Easy and The Fly.

Furthermore, Brown jokes about this being the only love song she’s ever written; for what it’s worth, “Jeff Goldbloom” proves a strong standalone with its buoyant, feverish expression of hunger and longing, not to mention an emphatic return that sets everyone’s sights on Georgia Gothic‘s 2022 release.

A tribute to the pair’s home state and all it’s given them (culturally, sound-wise, etc.), Georgia Gothic is said to be both inward-looking and outward-seeking. “We haven’t really highlighted where we’re from in the past two records,” Brown says of Mattiel’s upcoming album, “even though those were also written in Georgia. There’s so much great art and great music that’s come from Georgia, from all different types of genres and all over the state — but take R. E. M. and OutKast: There’s this weirdness that I can’t really put my finger on.”

Her bandmate and producer Jonah Swilley adds, “It’s the same with the B-52s, the Black Lips … it doesn’t feel like L.A., it doesn’t feel like New York, it feels like another planet. We’re not really in a ‘scene’ here in the same way. You have to make your own sound, create your own identity.”

Now I’ma cruisin’ for a bruisin’
Tired of pickin’ and choosin’
It’s got me losing sight
of everything I’m doing
Hey, Hey, what else was I supposed to do?
Hey, Hey, I’d give it all away for you
Hey, Hey, what else was I supposed to do?
Hey, Hey, I’d give it all away for you

In premiering Mattiel’s now-defunct “Count Your Blessings” music video off the artist’s 2017 self-titled debut album, Atwood Magazine praised the artist for delivering a catchy, spirited song full of a vivid, bright spark of life – an engaging fire that glows with passion, character, and resolve. We further praised the full-length Mattiel as “a daring escapade through vibrant metaphors and punctured warnings that remind us to keep alert, remember our roots, and always look forward.”

Four years later and now defining as a definitive duo, Mattiel sound sharper and more sure of themselves than ever before. “Jeff Goldblum” marks not only a laudable return, but also the exciting start of a new chapter for an artistry that promises to dazzle, delight, and defy expectation.
