We wrote this driving dance anthem to battle some of the anxieties we all felt about life and wanting to achieve so much in such a short amount of time

Coming out of the darkness of the past year, we’ll take all the good news and grooves we can get – and Kuinka’s latest single definitely fits the latter: A dazzling dose of sunny indie pop bliss, the band’s dynamic new dance anthem “All Mine” is a roaring, stunningly sweet revelry basking in the throes of upheaval.

We honestly didn’t know it could get this sunny in Seattle.

Want to make a sound
Can’t find the door
When you’re on the ground
Tongue
In the back of your head
Can’t help but say
What shouldn’t be said

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “All Mine,” Kuinka’s soaring first single of 2021 and the latest track off their forthcoming third album Shiny Little Corners, out 4/30/2021 year via Dutch Records. Following 2020’s lead single “Living Room Floor,” the Seattle-based five-piece of Miranda Zickler, Zach Hamer, Jillian Walker, Nathan Hamer, and Michelle Nuno have returned in style this year with what is perhaps their most definitively “pop” offering in a seven-year career that was previously praised as “joyous folk pop.”

Shiny Little Corners still has remnants of the band’s roots – the sounds of 2016’s fittingly-titled sophomore LP Heartland can be heard in everything from Miranda Zickler’s rollicking banjo strums, to the many expressive swells of vocal harmony cascading across their new album – but Kuinka have grown and transformed in the six years since their last full length album, and they’re pulling out all the stops. 2019’s Landlines EP already dipped its toes into the pop and rock worlds, and now Kuinka seem to have fully submerged themselves. If “Living Room Floor” hadn’t made it apparent, “All Mine” marks a new era for the Washington band – a fresh, exciting chapter full of possibility and musical sparks.

“We’ve been writing and playing together as a group for the better part of the last ten years, living and traveling together much of the time,” Kuinka co-founder Miranda Zickler reflects. “During the process of this album, though, we all had separate homes and lives, only coming together to put our hearts and feelings and fears into music. We all wrote these songs separately and arranged them together, and when we stepped back and looked at what we’d made, it felt like seeing the spaces between our separate lives. The overlap that happened in the often magical process of working through each others’ triumphs and hardships felt like sparkling pools of light, like safe retreats from confusion and heartache, like shiny little corners, away from the world.”

These shiny little corners come to the fore with startling force in “All Mine,” a pulsing pop song bustling with electric and acoustic guitars, thumping drums, and Zickler charged vocals. She shines in the run-up to the song’s frenzied chorus, rising and falling in quick succession as her words embody a sense of longing and desire:

Just want more but you’re on the road
Run through life but you’re running slow
Fought all night till we had to go
saying “I’ll make it. I’ll make it.”
Open up and you testify
Can’t sit still but you never try
Two calls in but you’re on the line
Saying “I’ll make it.”
I want to make it all mine.

“We wrote this driving dance anthem to battle some of the anxieties we all felt about life and wanting to achieve so much in such a short amount of time,” Kuinka tells Atwood Magazine. “We really used the song as an emotional release in the studio: the heavy-hitting rhythmic section, the thumping baseline, the shouts and powerhouse vocal by Miranda. Most of the tracking took place in one take, a sort of self-reflective meditation that was never meant to take itself too seriously.”

Stylistically reminiscent of 2010s indie pop bands like MisterWives and The Mowgli’s, “All Mine” is refreshingly bright and unapologetically buoyant.

Kuinka take no shortcuts in building up to, and out of their track’s massive chorus, leaving listeners with a sense of elation and yearning for more. Energy spills forth every moment, and whether it’s through Zickler’s excellent elocution and delivery or the full band’s magnificent, very “classic pop” vocal harmonies, Kuinka absolutely nail the landing.

No doubt Shiny Little Corners has many more surprises in store for listeners, but knowing what everyone’s gone through over the past year, Kuinka’s sparkling, radiant sounds are a welcome source of relief and rejuvenation. Their music, cultivated from pools of deep emotion, offers an oasis of cathartic joy – even if it’s joy with a zesty twist.

Love. Always bringing me down.
Better strike a chord
If you want to be found.
Fame. An impeccable thing.
I just want it all.
The crown, the rule, the ring
Just want more but you’re on the road
Run through life but you’re running slow
Fought all night till we had to go
saying “I’ll make it. I’ll make it.”
Open up and you testify
Cant sit still but you never try
Two calls in but you’re on the line
Saying “I’ll make it.”
