Listen: “Call on Me” – Litany

Released July 31, 2018, “Call on Me” is Litany’s first single since releasing 2017’s debut EP 4 Track (July 6, 2017). Hailing from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, the emerging UK band consists of Beth Cornell (vocals) and Jake Nicolaides (production). Compared to their previous work, “Call on Me” finds the duo moving in a pop direction, while still incorporating their “indie,” DIY sound. Cornell’s vocals, overlying Nicolaides’ simple yet slightly complicated production, make for a dynamic sound throughout; meanwhile, the fiercely independent act takes on an underlying theme of nostalgia in their music, bringing to the fore a ’90s influenced sound through both lyrics and production.

Are you gonna call on me?
You know I got a free house tonight
I’ll rent some films for us to see
Choices got some deals that are alright

Litany’s ’90s influences are heard right off the bat. For starters, renting movies from stores was a popular thing to do twenty to thirty years ago. The song also alludes to the use of phones and calling people, which is not seen as much today. Litany sing about sitting by the phone, waiting to see if a call will come.

“Call on Me” emphasizes the importance of real human connection and being with a person in the moment. Sharing simple but meaningful experiences; longing for someone to reach out, but not knowing if the call will ever come. Not wanting to be in love, but just wanting to be together. The pre-chorus and chorus’ lyrics are further backed up and emphasized through the echoing call and response style of Cornell’s vocals.

Sitting in the dark
Waiting on my own
Are you gonna call on me?
I just wanna hang out
I don’t want nothing else
Are you gonna call on me?
I don’t wanna be in love
I don’t wanna be your baby
I just want one touch
I don’t wanna be in love
I don’t wanna be your baby
I just want one touch

The narrator is over the romance of the relationship, but still longs to have that friendship in her life. Knowing someone is there, but not knowing for how long it will be. The straightforward nature of Litany’s lyrics makes clear what is supposed to be heard. The emotion in Cornell’s voice takes a powerful stand in the overall sound of the song, helping the lyrics feel especially impactful and believable.

Ultimately, Litany’s “Call on Me” excels through its utter honesty and moving emotion. Whether you’re pining for the past or shaping your future, Litany’s latest track will help see things through; stream “Call on Me,” out now, and stay tuned for more from the British duo in the months to come!
