April 2017: VEVO dscvr live (pronounced ‘discover’) unleashed a femme fatale triage at the Brooklyn Knitting Factory –a small intimate stage- showcasing three rising acts.  VEVO dscvr continues to bring spotlight to acts worthy of attention and Atwood Magazine had the privilege of being invited to their listening session featuring The Big Moon, Dagny, and Phoebe Ryan.

The Big Moon, a raunchy-hippie rock lady quartet from the UK (who just released their debut album through Columbia Records), launched the showcase bringing the crowd into a morbid drunken haze with their trance like vocals and 80s guitar-synths. Celia Archer, the band’s main spokeswoman of the night, engaged fans eliciting the youthful-rebellious vibe given off from their music.

Our performance right now is a mix of jetlag and a bit of drunk at the moment I hope it’s endearing.” They came donned casual in black shirts, converses, and natural hair as if they just came off a plane.

A diverse range of stories came alive through their music.  From wanting someone to “come back home for summer” to feeling low. Juliette Jackson, the band’s frontwoman had strong vocals that sounded a bit like Lady Gaga with a British tinge.  The Big Moon concluded their night with a Madonna rock rendition of “Beautiful Stranger” with the girls jumping around as if they were at a slumber party.  Their styles meshed well together creating alluring harmonies just from ad-libbing “ooh.”

Album Review: The Big Moon - 'Love in the 4th Dimension'

by Nicole Almeida

Dagny, a tall-blonde Norwegian pop star signed to Republic Records delivered a solid performance showcasing songs off her debut Ultraviolet EP (2016).  Her sound is a mix of Ellie Goulding inspired electronic instruments complemented by Tove Lo reminiscent vocals.  Dagny in fact has racked up over 42 million streams on Spotify.  For those who love Eurodance, and electro-pop, Dagny is someone you should keep on your radar!

“This is my first show in New York.  I’m from a very small town in Norway and my sister said it’s quite a big deal to play a show in New York.”

Her vivacious stage presence paired with her glittery-sparkle attire from her eye lids, bomber jacket, skirt such as cotton skirts, and black boots portray her as a pop star in the making.  She enticed the crowd into a chant singing “Ooooooh ohohohohohoh” the catchy hook in her most popular song “Blackbeat”.

Let’s not forget how the crowd also erupted when she concluded her set performing “Fool’s Gold” featuring Børns.  Dagny was gracious thanking VEVO for bringing her out to Brooklyn and forced her band to take a traditional group bow with her –implying they are a huge part of music too.

Phoebe Ryan, the most famous act of the night was of course the last artist to perform. The tiny Texas native is known for her soft-sultry vocals and from her feature on The Chainsmokers’ “All I Know.” Ryan genuinely looked like she was having fun beaming her teeth on stage.  Although her live vocal was messed up due to technical difficulties, she was professional by keeping the show going.   She joked calling one of her band members Jake “a bad boy” for stepping on her in ear piece that fell on stage.  Luckily for the crowd she didn’t pull a Mariah Carey.

After performing the first song she received a new ear piece announcing, “Baby I can hear myself now.”

Ryan also has achieved a lot as a new act racking up over 56 million Spotify streams just from her debut Mine EP (2016).  The highlight of her set was the older duet song she co-wrote with Jaymes Young “We Won’t.”  Ryan’s music touches a younger demographic of Gen Xers rather than millennials and is evident in her youthful appeal of having green hair.

VEVO dscvr chose three very different acts that have potential to pave their own paths in the music industry. The Big Moon are attempting to fill the void of having a female rock act mainstream, Dagny is riding off of the European pop wave now popular in the states, while Ryan’s soft timbre can be a powerful tool if used on the right tracks.
