Litany is quickly becoming my go-to dreamweaver: The artist I turn to for all things love. Whether it’s basking in the ‘high highs’ euphoria of a young crush or lamenting the tragedy of ill-fated romance, Beth Cornell has my proverbial number and she’s been calling nonstop.

Already an Atwood editor’s pick, artist-to-watch, and recent feature, Litany has become a hot favorite in a short, but impactful period of time.

Wrote your name inside my locker
Really thought we’d be forever
Told my mum about ya
Never really done that
You used to meet me in the form room
After everybody left school
Played me all your demos
Always first to hear those
But when the summer came it ended
Our love became more of a friendship
My brother said I should forget it
And that I’m just being pathetic

Love Letter – Litany

Since going from a duo down to a solo earlier this year, Litany’s tracks “My Dude,” “Go Out,” and now “Love Letter” highlight a vibrant, emotionally-savvy artistry finding fun new takes on love, desire and longing, three of the most classic and certainly relatable emotions.

I dunno
If we were ever such a good team
Or we were suckers for a routine
Oh honey I don’t understand it
Why dontcha wanna hear me out?
I’m not asking for a love letter
Or three kisses in an SMS
I just think that you should know better
Than leading me along

Released September 27, “Love Letter” is an emphatic attempt to understand one’s partner better. It’s the synthesis of tension during a period of strife. “I’m not asking for a love letter or three kisses in an SMS; I just think that you should know better than leading me along,” the artist sings, synths swiveling gently in her wake.

You say you can’t wait for September
Asking me if I remember
How we used to cut class
And hang behind the bike sheds
Oh are we really such a good team
Or just suckers for a routine
Oh honey I don’t understand it
Why dontcha wanna hear me out?

“Love Letter” is glittery and delicious, a delightful assertion of relationship rights and wrongs. Litany manages to find the romance in even the most jaded of scenarios as she sings nostalgically about her love’s birth, slow fizzle, and ultimate fade-out.

Any free moments of the tight three-minute number are quickly taken up by the song’s self-righteous chorus – a well deserved assertion of the love, respect, and attention we all deserve.

If folks weren’t already convinced of Litany’s talent, this should put them over the edge. “Love Letter” marries Carly Rae Jepsen’s glitz with some HAIM edge to form a whimsical, sweet indulgence.
