This is by far the most personal song I’ve ever released. I feel terrified, if I’m being honest, to bleed out in front of the world like this.

Heartbreak is a consistent gut-punch to the body, mind, and soul. It’s a weight that won’t lift; a hole that won’t heal – and while thousands, if not millions of songwriters have endeavored to capture the force of this feeling, every new addition feels as visceral as the last. A delicate and vulnerable piano ballad, Notelle’s “Diet Change” radiates with the raw pain of loss as she endeavors to heal from heartbreak.

Diet Change - Notelle
Diet Change – Notelle
I never thanked you
for my broken heart
without it I’d be
dead in your broken arms
I see you out
And I shake and I stumble
that kind of pain
doesn’t kill but it humbles you
crashing of waves
Thought I was over this part

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Diet Change,” Notelle’s fourth single of 2020 following the songs “Come for Me,” “Alive,” and “Bugs.” An alternative pop artist with a dark and electronic lean, Nashville-based Notelle began her career as a featured vocalist and topliner six very long years ago. Her debut solo single “Power” arrived two years ago, and she hasn’t looked back since; “Diet Change” is the artist’s eighth overall solo release, and arrives with a notably intimate sonic template that is instantly distinguishable from her previous work, and yet directly in line with the identity she has built in two years’ time.

Melancholy piano chords set a hauntingly bittersweet groundswell of feeling as the artist begins to unveil her shattered emotional state. Her silken vocals fall gently over the ears; a subtle, nuanced approach to production makes it feel like we are together with Notelle in a dimly lit room, watching her at the piano – maybe even sitting at the bench, right there by her side. Her chorus is an immersive overhaul of inner fragility and pain:

No oooohhh
my new reality
Nooo oooh
I need a diet change
all that I see in your eyes
eat every word, every lie
it’s weighing me down
I don’t know how,
but I need a diet change
I need a diet change

“This is by far the most personal song I’ve ever released. I feel terrified, if I’m being honest, to bleed out in front of the world like this,” Notelle tells Atwood Magazine. “I was in so much pain when I wrote it, and the thought of letting an audience in, in this way, makes me feel terribly vulnerable.

She explains, “As a songwriter, I write for others constantly, but with “Diet Change” I was truly writing for myself. In that moment, I felt hopeless from a sickening breakup. I was drowning, emotionally cutting, struggling to find a way to cope with confusion, loss, pain, shame, guilt, grief, and grasping for hope – all of that at once. It was unbearable, but I had hit a point where I knew that even though I wasn’t the only one wrapped up in this ending, even though there was someone else, somewhere else who was involved in this…he was irrelevant to me now. His loss, his pain, his shame, his guilt, his everything wasn’t mine anymore. It didn’t matter. It shouldn’t matter. For the most part, it was by his hands, and because of his choices that I was suffering, but from that point forward, I realized I could at least stop suffering from my own. I started watching where I put my time and energy and focus. I started dropping bad habits and picking up new ones. I stopped indulging in things that were simply temporary anesthetics and started addressing the wounds themselves. I made changes and it worked. Although, I’m scared to show the world how deep that pain ran, at least I can say today, I’m truly happy, and healthy, and safe. And I got here on my own.”

It’s the moment when you realize that who you love, what you seek out, and what you consume emotionally shapes your reality. It’s the moment when you realize it’s time for a “Diet Change.”

Out October 23rd, “Diet Change” is something special and new from Notelle. Stripped of that protective layer of shiny production and electronic work that all too often keeps audiences from connecting directly with an artist, “Diet Change” is raw and uninhibited: An up-close and personal display of heartbreak at the tipping point. It’s intimately hers, and yet it feels relatable and universal – a vessel through which we might experience our own sense of loss and brokenness as well.

Time will tell if this is to be the new norm or a brief venture, but either way, Notelle has us locked in with “Diet Change.” Stream the song exclusively on Atwood Magazine!

all of your friends
None of them know the truth
But why would I hurt them
I’d be the same as you
swear that i’m wrong
From the moment it’s over
pretend that you’re sure
But look over your shoulder
smile and it’s fake
A scar from the things that you do
No oooohhh
my new reality
Nooo oooh
I need a diet change
all that I see in your eyes
eat every word, every lie
it’s weighing me down
I don’t know how,
but I need a diet change
I need a diet change
