There’s nothing more important, when you’re spiraling downward or already in a dark place, than knowing you’re not alone. Life is not a solo journey: It’s an adventure we embark on together with family, friends, acquaintances, and strangers. It’s seldom easy and there’s often more chaos than control or sense, but it’s our life – a shared experience – and we get through it as one. Sonny Elliot’s new single is a serene, ethereal message of love and comfort: A tranquil breath of gorgeous indie folk, “Adore You” is like a whisper floating on the wind – its delicate beauty will move you deep inside, but only if you’re listening.

A car crash is coming
so why can’t I look away
I know its gonna hurt you
But I cant stop it, anyway
Just know we all adore you
Just know we all adore you

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Adore You,” Sonny Elliot’s second single of 2020 following late March’s “New Moon.” The UK-based duo of brothers Chris Peden (acoustic guitar and vocals) and Joseph Peden (piano and electric guitar), Sonny Elliot have a knack for finding the beauty in dark spaces, blending acoustic and electric instrumentation into an ethereal state of grace. Since their debut in May 2018, the group have racked up hundreds of thousands of streams through songs full of warmth and nuance – a haunting grace. Falling somewhere into the “indie folk” category, Sonny Elliot’s songs are the up-close and personal kind of music that transports us up and out of bodies, and into another realm. In premiering their song “Broken Glasses” back in August 2018, Atwood wrote, “Radiating with cinematic magnificence, “Broken Glasses” is truly otherworldly in its emotional strength. Sonny Elliot immerse us in a singular world of love and healing; powerfully emotive and utterly hypnotising, “Broken Glasses” promises to break your heart and heal your soul.”

It is not that Sonny Elliot make music with the intent of leaving a mark; it is more so that the way they approach each song and the subjects they choose to sing about speak to the human experience. Their poetry is particularly stirring on “Adore You,” which finds Chris Peden watching a friend’s slow descent and extending his arm to be an anchor – whether or not he’s taken up on that offer:

A car crash is coming
so why cant I look away
Beautiful Butterfly
The one who flew to high
Just know we all adore you
Just know we all adore you

Built off unassuming acoustic guitars and Peden’s hot-on-the-mic, atmospheric vocals, “Adore You” is made for those intimate moments of reflection and introspection. In hearing it alone, the song feels like it was made specifically for the listener – with Peden whispering words right into our ears.

“This song is very personal to me,” says Chris. “It’s hard to watch someone you love and adore and who has only ever tried to help others, slowly fall apart at the seams. Not everything we do in life works out… so it’s important to let them know, no matter what, you’ll always be there for them and without any form of judgement.”

And we, won’t change a thing
Who you are, or who you’ve been
And we, won’t change a thing
Who you are, or who you’ve been
Just know we all adore you
Just know we all adore you

For Sonny Elliot, “Adore You” has come to be a beacon of love and connection during the present’s dark, difficult times. “I feel the song can’t help but take on additional meaning now listening to it in the context of today’s political and social environment,” Chris Peden says. “I don’t think anyone is the same person they were a year ago, which is when the song was originally written, due to the enormous shifts that have occurred in many ways in the way we are feeling collectively as a response to such horrendous events. On a personal level, being apart from family, not knowing when I will next see them and the worry that someone could fall ill or have their life taken away from them – it’s made the sentient of the song more apparent. Don’t wait to tell someone you care about them or how important and how amazing they are, you never know what can happen.”

Don’t wait to tell someone you care about them or how important and how amazing they are, you never know what can happen.

Lilting and aching all at once, “Adore You” is not for the faint of heart, but it is perfect for the summer season. Along the lines of fellow “indie folk” acts like Dustin Tebbutt, Novo Amor, Hayden Calnin, and so on, Sonny Elliot’s music can be listened to equally as a source of light, subtlety, and perspective, or as a casual, beautiful backing soundtrack to life in motion. Their piano and guitar work is sublime – a magnetic listening experience enhanced and elevated by sweet, soothing vocals.

Whether you need a vessel for channeling your own vulnerability, or whether you’re simply looking for a moment’s reprieve, “Adore You” is worth every listen. Stream Sonny Elliot’s new single exclusively on Atwood Magazine!
