Today’s Song: BAILEN’s “Something Tells Me” Discovers Love Through Diffidence

BAILEN
From L to R: Daniel, Julia, and David Bailen

Navigating relationships with other people is seldom an easy task. Navigating a relationship with oneself is often even more difficult. Every one of us finds ourselves tackling inner demons of varying sorts, forever holding onto the shreds of hope that we will make it through. Moreover, we tend to attach ourselves to those who find themselves tackling similar demons.

This ideal is expressly true in the case of NYC-based BAILEN’s debut single, “Something Tells Me,” which laments one’s inclination to being caught up in self-doubt and worry, while finding love with someone who feels as equivocally “broken” and “confused.” The song shows that although it oft feels like these internal woes are subjective to oneself, there is in fact someone for everyone. BAILEN ultimately taps into sentimentalized self-reflection, searching for answers to perhaps unanswerable questions as the realities of love and life settle in.

Do you think that you’re the only one with secrets?

“Something Tells Me” finds the siblings Bailen (Julia, Daniel, and David, to be exact) and their friend Pierre Piscitelli crooning about finding love while grappling with insecurities, and utilizing these insecurities to realize their true feelings. The Bailen siblings’ extraordinary harmonies bring these sentiments to life, as folksy guitar and punctuating drumbeats aid in making the tune sound cohesively and meticulously crafted.

“Something Tells Me” seemingly idealizes diffidence the same way an early-2000s indie film champions the “manic pixie dream girl,” but not necessarily to a fault. The track itself feels as though it belongs in one of these films, most likely during a montage of the protagonist and the love interest spending more and more time with one another. It is the quintessential overture to the filmic rhapsody of newfound companionship.

The song implores its listeners to be mindful, and to acknowledge that it is possible to find a partner with whom you can wholly relate. Self-reflection is an imperative facet of the human condition, and ultimately becomes a fundamental part of the way in which we present ourselves to others. If we are unable to understand who we are, how is anyone else ever going to be able to understand us?

And each day I am growing older,
But not less confused.

It is rarely easy to be able to seamlessly attach oneself to another person. “Something Tells Me” traverses through the undoubted effort necessary to achieve total contentedness, ultimately maintaining an unshakeable optimism throughout. “Something tells me / I could fall in love with you,” warbles the chorus. It’s not totally recognizable yet, however the presence of something is still inherently there, despite the verses’ propensity for focusing on self-doubt.

The song follows in line with what Rihanna once sang about: “We found love in a hopeless place.” Brokenness and confusion can be found in all of us, but regardless of whoever you are, whatever you do, or however you feel, you are certainly not alone. “Something Tells Me” is a euphonious and permeating reminder of this sentiment.

“Something Tells Me” is undeniably impressive, particularly as a leading single, and serves to prove BAILEN as a force to be reckoned with. The song seeks out a truth and maintains an applicable relevancy to which anyone can relate, while harboring a uniqueness that is both refreshing and potent. Something tells me, you could fall in love with BAILEN too.

“Something Tells Me” – BAILEN

lyrics

Do you think I use the same name,
The same name that my mother gave me
On my first day born?
Do you think you’re the only one with secrets?
The only one who holds them near,
The only one who’s hiding here?

Something tells me,
I could fall in love with you.
Something tells me,
I could fall in love with you.
Something tells me,
I could fall in love with you,
With you.

There are words I’ve said
That weigh down on my shoulders.
And each day I am growing older,
But not less confused.
Do you think you’re the only one who’s broken?
The only one who’s trying to
say those words
to someone new?

Something tells me,
I could fall in love with you.
Something tells me,
I could fall in love with you.
Something tells me,
I could fall in love with you,
With you.

Oh, something tells me,
I could fall in love with you.
Something tells me,
I could fall in love with you.
Something tells me,
I could fall in love with you,
With you.
