I want you to come to California anyway.

California is a place where dreams come true, and hope dies a slow death. It’s home to the city of angels, with just as many demons among them — and yet still, there’s a reason (beyond urban sprawl) that California is home to more people than anywhere else in the union. The New West is still a land full of opportunity; after everything is said and done, it’s still a mythical place with a magic quality about it. Singer/songwriter Tyson Motsenbocker captures the golden state’s allure in his “Come to California,” a bright new song that reckons with the state’s majesty and myth.

Is it such a bad idea, bein’ brave?
Wearin’ our own skin to the fray
If it’s not worth riskin’ everything,
I would say… wasn’t worth having anyway
Where the pine trees turn to palms
I was wondering, could we belong?
In a big world we don’t understand
I still believe that we will find our way

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Come To California,” the latest single off Tyson Motsenbocker’s forthcoming sophomore album, Someday I’ll Make It All Up To You (out February 14th via Tooth & Nail Records). A Washington-born, Southern California-based singer/songwriter, Motsenbocker has always been somewhat of a West Coaster – but his experience since relocating to America’s most populace state has been, and continues to be, worlds apart from his life up north.

“California will either realize your dreams, or crush you under its foot,” Motsenbocker tells Atwood Magazine. “There isn’t a lot of middle ground here.” Since he moved over five years ago, the folk/folk-rock artist has released a debut album, two EPs, and a slew of heartwarming singles. Clearly, he’s survived the transition – making the most of Southern California’s perennial good weather, without losing sight of life’s everyday struggles.

Armed with his acoustic guitar and with a full band setup behind him, Motsenbocker sings about taking risks and jumping into the fray, pushing our own boundaries and making the most out of this thing called life. For him (and for this song), that narrative centralizes around the notion of being in California — or as the song goes:

I want you to come to California
I want you to come to California
When they think you should stay
They’ll be right, and that’s okay
I want you to come to California anyway

Motsenbocker’s buoyant, sunny chorus captures the grandeur of his new home, as well as the lens through which he views the state. California, to him, is so much more than any one song could possibly say. “It’s on fire, pretty regularly,” he notes. “It’s where the pine trees of my youth turn into the palm trees of my adulthood. It’s romantic and dangerous, where they design iPhones and Avengers movies. It has four of the five biomes. It’s enormous and too diverse to categorize. It out-peoples the nation of Canada. It’s a crazy place to go, maybe the same way falling in love is crazy.”

It’s an Indian summer
This year again
Chase the lot lines back to the developments
Everything is changing
It won’t be long
You’re the one change I wanted all along
Where the firelines across the hills
Burnin’ me and I think you always will
In a lowlight
Where we can’t see the ground
I still believe
That we will find our way

40 million people just received a new ode to their home, and it is as golden as the state itself. “Come to California” beckons us forward, calling out to us, tantalizing us with dreams of a blue skies, warm air, and a hot, yellow sun… and that’s just one piece of the pie.
