If one thing can be said of Rhode Island’s Will Orchard, it is that he is unrelentingly prolific. The DIY singer/songwriter released over 100 song collections between December 2014 and June 2018, making raw left-of-center indie folk music under the moniker littleboybigheadonbike. Having recently transitioned to making music under his own name, Orchard remains a wellspring of creativity and in his latest offerings. Out October 25, new single “Turning Back Again” radiates with a sense of knowing as Will Orchard weaves a fresh folk tapestry through bright New England scenes.

Old Friends on the Mountain - Will Orchard
Old Friends on the Mountain – Will Orchard
Woke up on foggy morn
Climbed down from the sky
It never crossed my mind
That I was still alight
When I saw the chirping birds
A haze came over my eyes
I fell asleep again
In a way I can’t describe
Well, watching from the porch
Is one fine way to live
When the dreams come up
from their hollows

I’m turning back again

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Turning Back Again,” the lead single off Will Orchard’s forthcoming new album Old Friends on the Mountain (due out January 3, 2020). Radiating with sweet DIY charm, “Turning Back Again” places Orchard’s sweet voice in a richly engaging array of instruments that play with and off one another, keeping the groove while pushing the song forward all at once.

“‘Turning Back Again’ is an ode to intuition,” Orchard tells Atwood Magazine. “It’s about following an itch you have that may be irrational, but you do it anyway simply because it feels right. It was written during a very turbulent time in which my mind was in a constant cloud. I found myself constantly swaying back in forth in my worldview and even my own identity. During this time I was living on a farm in Connecticut. I recall waking up one morning and marveling at the brilliance of the sun shining on the meadow across the street. The sight of the bird flocks above the field and the sparkly summer day was enough to inspire this song.”

He continues, “The beauty around me struck so deeply that this song came out in just a few minutes. The song celebrates that sudden feeling of certainty, however temporary it may have been.”

The song celebrates that sudden feeling of certainty, however temporary it may have been.

Well I hopped over the wall
That separates the way
Of understanding why
And how it feels inside
And the bears were drinking honey
From mason jars so grand
Big birds singing songs
About flying over land
But they don’t fly away
They circle back around
And drink with me tonight
In the midst of chiming sounds

“Turning Back Again” is simple, yet nonetheless enchanting: Orchard invites listeners into his world of observation and action, sharing the sights and sounds of a wanderer searching for blips of knowing in an uncertain world. His first significant album release since littleboybigheadonbike’s 2018 album BIG BLUE BUTTERFLIES, Old Friends On The Mountain looks to mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Will Orchard’s nascent, yet already quite vibrant musical career.
