“Wasted on You” – Peter Sandberg ft. Aquilo

Heartwrenchingly beautiful and breathtakingly wondrous, Peter Sandberg’s third album Midnattsol is a powerful tribute to (and celebration of) Sweden’s midnight sun: A cinematic record full of passion and intimacy that opens listeners’ eyes and ears to one of Earth’s natural marvels and our own individual  potential. Whilst Midnattsol ebbs and flows between expressive neoclassical piano pieces and cinematic, tender balladry, no song better encapsulates its depth and gentle radiance than the closing track and its moving new music video. An achingly sweet outpouring of raw humanity and intimate connection, “Wasted on You” glows with stirring awe as Peter Sandberg and Aquilo capture a moment of meditative wonder.

Crash a car,
Fake a death
Try and make it something its not
They say that time flies people
wonder if they want what they got
I don’t want to settle down,
Settle down and say its wasted

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering Simeon Frohm-directed music video for “Wasted on You,” the serene finale to the entrancing and enchanting Midnattsol (released October 1, 2021 via Phases Records). A Swedish neo-classical and electronic multi-instrumentalist/composer, Peter Sandberg has made an international name for himself over the past five years through music that immerses the ears and inspires the mind. Midnattssol follows 2020’s acclaimed sophomore album Återvända, and finds him collaborating with various artists from Sweden and the UK’s independent scene, including fellow composer Tom Ashbrook, singer/songwriters Jake Isaac and Siv Jakobsen, and indie pop band Aquilo – many of whom have previously feature on Atwood Magazine.

Whilst Midnattssol deserves to be experienced in its entirety, Aquilo’s Tom Higham and Ben Fletcher help it close on a profound cathartic high: “Wasted on You” invites self-reflection and introspection as the artists take listeners on a journey of longing and connection that touches on thoughts about time, life and death, and what it is we want to get out of our days here on Earth.

Crack a joke, fake a smile,
Don’t you have some place you should be
I caught a good glimpse looking in,
Its not the face that I want to see
I don’t want to settle down,
Settle down and let us waste it,
Settle down and say its wasted,
Wasted on You

If “Wasted on You” captures our imagination and awe in song, then its powerful music video serves to enhance both aspects of this audience experience. The latest in a series of music videos brings us up close and personal to this manifestation of Sweden’s midnight sun.

“I’m so pleased that Midnattssol is finally out!” Sandberg tells Atwood Magazine. “The whole album represents a journey to the land of the midnight sun here in Sweden – and that’s what we actually did. I went on a journey to discover the midnight sun, and my friend and art director Simeon Frohm created a contemporary realisation of the sun, a glowing orb. Over the series of the music videos we go on a journey from the forest floor, to the open fields, to the mountain valleys and then finally to the sun across the lake. The music I created for the album accompanies this – from the first track ‘Sol’ to the final piece at the end of the night, ‘Wasted on You’ featuring my friends Aquilo. Really the visual and musical journey is open to anyone to interpret in their own way, which is why I worked with so many musical collaborators on this album, from Scandinavia and the UK – each adding their own touch about what the aura and symbolism of the Midnattssol means to them.”

My hands been trembling,
Maybe it was something you said
Man I overthink everything,
Good at getting lost in my head
I don’t want to settle down,
Settle down and let us waste it,
I don’t want to settle down,
Settle down and say its wasted,
Wasted on You

While it is focused conceptually on this incredible midnight sun phenomenon, Midnattssol is, for listeners everywhere, an adventure into the self: An opportunity for us to sit back and reconnect with our surroundings, our loved ones, and ourselves. How we do that is ultimately an individual decision, but “Wasted on You” does more than its share in creating a space for contemplation and reverie.
