Sheffield’s four-piece NAVY is a class act in the making.

This young band – comprised of Oliver Graham on vocals, George Craft on guitar, Matthew Jones on bass, and Kyle Marriot on drums – though strikingly young in their career, are beyond skilled with showmanship to spare. All to say, they have the talent and ambition indicative of a fruitful future ahead of them. With their latest single, “No Man’s Land,” these four lads build on the sound they’ve begun to establish as their staple. It’s classic rock, with an edge of that sultry, addictive alternative flair.

That said, they’ve donned a darker atmosphere overall. Presenting a profoundly intimate and honest admission of fear and anxiety with this new track. As the first single off their upcoming debut EP, “No Man’s Land” serves as an unrestrained look at anxieties and panic attacks. The song is drenched in classic grunge and rock sounds – think a fusion of Nirvana and The Stone Roses. With a foundation of Jones’ steady bass line and Marriot’s precisely measured drums that come in with fills just when they need to, NAVY work in tandem to set the stage perfectly for the true star of this song, the guitar, to come in and elevate the track to a new level.

Craft’s guitar licks are just tasty. Truly, they can only be described as lush and thoroughly compelling. Between the way in which they drive the song to a euphoric release of tension that’s built up throughout the song in the discussion that occurs between them and the lyrics and backing instrumentation and the amp feedback as the song comes to a close – there’s just something about “No Man’s Land” that is undeniably pleasing to listen to. One might describe it as transcendent, the way the song pushes and flows in just the right ways it’s made clear that each element holds an intentionality. By the end, there’s almost a reluctant resolve to the story of the song that’s developed by the combination of instrumentation and lyrics.

In terms of vocals, Graham delivers them with a rawness that lends itself wholeheartedly to the lyrics. He gives them the agency over his emotion that they beg for by not being overproduced or ‘perfect’ so to say. In other words, there is an evident authenticity woven throughout that grants the song a rare bit of integrity that supports the storyline they’ve built that’s mesmerizing.

As he sings or rather begs, “Eleanor / Call my name / Call my name,” letting his voice pitch and fluctuate just slightly, a fight for relief is revealed. It must be said that the song details the experience of a panic attack, which is made increasingly evident as the song goes on and the lyrics develop.

No scars to show this battle I’ve fought
No trace of this much too familiar war
It’s been quiet in no man’s land
The world spins but I stand frozen still
You’ll be fine take another pill
It’s been quiet in no man’s land

The internal struggle that NAVY illustrates is incredibly personable. From the budding wish for some sort of physical evidence through scarring to show the battle you’ve gone through, to the passive mention of “you’ll be fine take another pill,” the images and emotion they exude through the track are startlingly relatable.

As the first peek at their upcoming project, “No Man’s Land” stands as an anthem to internal struggle and perseverance.

It’s both authoritative and modest in its establishment of an atmosphere that is all too familiar. For being about something that’s notably difficult to put into precise words while maintaining its mystique, NAVY has done so remarkably.

“No Man’s Land” is out now, with the band’s debut EP to follow soon after.
