The Best Music of 2025

According to Our Favorite Artists!

* * *

Dublin-born singer/songwriter Ailbhe Reddy is gearing up to release her third studio album Kiss Big in early 2026.

Best Song of 2025

Stiff competition this year, but I think my pick is “Euro Country” by CMAT, from her phenomenal third album of the same name. I just saw her play in the 3Arena in Dublin and she was incredible.

Best Album of 2025

West End Girl by Lily Allen, without a doubt! I’ve listened to this so many times. I’ve watched the Architectural Digest video of the house. For about two weeks I was completely obsessed with this album and this album alone.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Smerz has been a good discovery for me, in particular their song “You got time and I got money.”

Best Song of 2025

“Borderline” from I Went To Find You. Pretty sure Jay McCarrol and I wrote it back in 1692 and we finally got to release it. A huge relief. Centuries of holding onto a witchy brew meant for other people’s bedrooms. I can now finally move on.

Best Album of 2025

No album took me on a journey like Lily Allen’s West End Girl.

Not since Marvin Gaye’s Here, My Dear have I felt so exposed to a persons interpersonal crisis all while being drawn in deeply by the melodies, the lyrics and the production. There is nothing like a savage break up album (Star-Crossed by Kacey Musgraves another favourite) so I bow to her courage. I found it incredibly powerful and beautiful.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Bells Larsen. Great craft in the making of a song (“514-415” a fave). Musician friends from Toronto started to post about his music and I was drawn in immediately recognizing the influences that float me. Well spun lyrics and melodies that have put me in a good mood many cold Sunday mornings.

Best Song of 2025

“Swing” by Billie Marten. This song has such a cool sound, I love the beat and all the different instruments. I’m usually not this upbeat but I just love this song, it’s cool and groovy.

Best Album of 2025

Dog Eared by Billie Marten. I’ve always listened to Billie, but I love the rawness to her new music. I would always put this album on in my car when driving. I put my friend on to this one as well so we can sing together in the car haha. I really love this album.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Will Fox. I’ve been listening to his album Old News all year nonstop. I know all the lyrics to every single song, it’s stuck in my mind. It has such a unique sound and amazing lyrics. I don’t know anything about this guy but I really love his music. If this album would have been released this year it would’ve been my album of the year. Really recommend!

Best Song of 2025

“Speyside” by Bon Iver. Always been a fan of Bon Iver. I feel like this is one of their best songs, my favourite of their new album. Very fragile and melancholic in the best way.

Best Album of 2025

Cameron Winter’s Heavy Metal. I’m always excited when I hear something that sounds fresh. Although it’s not reinventing the wheel it sounds like something I haven’t heard before. From how he sings and puts words together is very free and creative.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Dina Ögon. They were what came to mind first. Been listening to them a lot lately. I guess I first discovered them late last year, but really got into them this year and they’ve been my go to band to listen to in any situation. Well crafted songs, both uplifting and melancholic.

Best Song of 2025

“Back To Me” by The Marías was on repeat all year for me. Not only are Maria’s haunting vocals ethereal and transcendent, but the lyrics, melodies, and overall production on the song evoke such intense feelings of longing, grief, and regret. I love when a song stirs up such a beautifully messy pot of conflicting, bittersweet emotions. It stops me in my tracks in the best way. I also love how The Marias went in a newer direction production-wise with this song, while still honoring their signature dreamy sound.

Best Album of 2025

Flowers by Durand Jones & The Indications was my go-to soundscape in 2025. They have this gift of seamlessly transporting me to a sunny garden of love in the 1960s. I am reminded of all the beauty and bliss in the little things in life, and how love is literally everywhere we go if we’re willing to open our eyes and hearts! They evoke such a timeless sound which significantly inspired the making of my upcoming LP. They are my favorite band at the moment.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Christian Lee Hutson. Absolute genius of a songwriter. I saw him at the Troubadour in February, where he played an acoustic set of his latest album with the accompaniment of a violinist. He has the ability to illustrate such bittersweet, aching, nostalgia with such an honest, literal, yet simple songwriting approach. He paints a poignant picture with every line, sharing an infinite amount of complex emotions and stories. He’s super reliable and just radiates such great energy. I simply love him!

Best Song of 2025

“Felicity” by Miya Folick: This song really scratches something in my brain. The flute and strings, the bass line, those crisp drums, the imagery in the lyrics… so so good. I’ve always been a big fan of Miya. She is one of my favorite songwriters and lyricists. I was lucky enough to get to write a song for my album with her and open for her on tour earlier this year. Everyone should listen to the entire album Erotica Veronica. All of the songs are so beautifully produced and her voice is angelic.

Best Album of 2025

The Crux by Djo: This album has no skips for me. I can hear a lot of Fleetwood Mac and Beatles influences in this record but he does it in a cool modern way and it’s inspiring. I tend to listen to albums on repeat during certain eras of my life and this album will now forever be associated with the early stages of when I was starting to release Holy Grail and working on the visuals with my best friend SJ (who is also a Djo stan). I took her to his show at the Greek in LA this year and we were shout-singing to every song. It was heaven. Such a fun record with so many personal memories attached! Plus, his band is amazing live.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Eli: Her album Stage Girl she released this year is nostalgic pop perfection. I met her last year while recording my album because she’s housemates with my producer. I saw her a lot over the months I was over at their house finishing my album. I’d hear her making music through the walls and it felt like this cute little artist commune. She’s so talented and hilarious. I love her so much and “Girl of Your Dreams” is triple platinum in my household!

Best Song of 2025

Our song of the year is Sam Fender’s “TV Dinner.” It’s got hints of Jeff Buckley and Radiohead and just grooves so hard.

Best Album of 2025

The Crux by Djo is an album we’ve all loved this year. The songwriting is incredible and the sound choices are very organic which is refreshing to hear in 2025.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

An artist we’ve bonded over discovering this year is Parcels. They’re all fantastic musicians; they’re dynamic and the chemistry they have together is super inspiring for us.

Best Song of 2025

“See you later, I’m gone” by Robert Lester Folsom. Robert Lester Folsom’s story is one of the most inspiring stories I have ever heard. It fascinates me how the universe truly has its own timing for everything. That song has been the soundtrack of my year this year. It hits no matter what mood you’re in.

Best Album of 2025

Racing Mount Pleasant by Racing Mount Pleasant. Racing Mount Pleasant’s album changed for me what music can and is supposed to be. I hear this record more as an expression than a song. That is so inspiring to me as a writer and artist myself. The movements involved with their songs flow like emotions of day-to-day lives which is an incredible thing to capture.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Daughter. My friend showed me a song called “smother” by Daughter, which then led to me to dive into their entire artist project. I cannot believe how much I was missing out on. Their melodic choices and patience with the build of the song is magical and creates a powerful punch in every song.

Best Song of 2025

India Shore: “Glitter” By Eli. I have been listening to nonstop. It’s amazing. I love that and I love her whole project. I think it’s amazing.

Best Album of 2025

Claire Altendahl: We both really got into the Water From Your Eyes album It’s a Beautiful Place this year. I feel like that’s more my album of the year. I think it’s really, really cool.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

India Shore: Our bass player has a new project called Bird Dog and they just put out a song called “Nebraska,” and it is so f***ing good. Like, it’s amazing. Not that they’re new artists to me, but this project is a new project and that song is new to me.

Best Song of 2025

“Dream Pixel” by Moreish Idols. We’ve always loved Moreish Idols, and this song really struck a chord with us, really sweet and beautiful lyrics and the musicianship is amazing,

Best Album of 2025
Cosplay by Sorry. This album has a really great feeling of nostalgia, while also being super refreshing. It perfectly encapsulates what bands are capable of at the moment, blending in the electronic elements seamlessly without being overbearing.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Ear. The production on their music is just amazing, doesn’t feel like we’ve ever heard anything like it before, but that may just be because we’re a little naive to what’s out there. Seems like Ear and the surrounding world of music is really pushing into something new and exciting which everyone is ready for.

Best Song of 2025

“White Geraniums” by Emily Barker. The song is beautiful and immediately takes me to a calm place. It reminds me of artists I love, Aldous Harding/Gillian Welch, but is also completely its own thing. Emily is a fantastic writer.

Best Album of 2025

Interior Live Oak by Cass McCombs. He’s written several of my favourite songs ever, most of all “County Line” from Wit’s End, and the entirety of Mangy Love is incredible, but his new album is just another moment of him doing authentically what he wants to do as an artist. I’ll always have time to sit down and listen to what he’s making.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Warren Zevon, I’d heard his hits before but never really dug into his catalogue. Songs like “Carmelita,” “Desperados Under the Eaves,” and “Lawyers, Guns and Money” have been on heavy rotation in my brain.

Best Song of 2025

Anything by Ethan Tasch. But if I had to pick it’d be his track “Shell.” Gosh I love that song. The seagull sounds are my favourite part.

Best Album of 2025

For the second year running it would have to be Stephen Wilson Jr’s album Son of Dad. I am constantly finding myself putting that record on and falling in love with a new song each time. My current favourite track on the record is “Twisted.” Stephen Wilson Jr is one of those rare artists that draws you in and never quite lets go. I can’t wait for him to tour in Australia.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Wild Rivers! I’ve played their whole discography and can’t seem to get enough of it. We can thank my ex-situationship for this discovery, hahaha.

Best Song of 2025

“Tant pis pour elle” by Charlotte Cardin. I adore her, always – but this track hits different. It appears simpler than her past releases, yet somehow bolder and sharper. Playful, sexy, and totally unafraid; I can hear it on a loop and it systematically feels empowering and straight up badass.

Best Album of 2025

SABLE, fABLE by Bon Iver. Nothing transports me like this album. It stirs up emotion without sinking into sadness – and whenever it pushes into something uneasy, it immediately lifts you back up, comfortingly. I’m probably in the mood to play it front to back at any given moment. (Also definitely Rosalia’s LUX, I feel like I’m still discovering it.)

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Gilligan Moss. House meets disco meets pure good energy. Discovering them this year felt special – their visual world is so vivid and the whole project radiates positivity (online and especially live). I reached out, and now I’m making music with Ben from the duo – some of my happiest moments this year, and some of the music I’m most excited to carry into the next.

Best Song of 2025

“Moody” by Royel Otis. This was one of my top Spotify wrapped songs this year – Royel Otis does an insane job at delivering a record with lyrical depth while also being music to jam to.

Best Album of 2025

$ome $exy $ongs 4 U by PARTYNEXTDOOR, Drake. Growing up outside of ATL, I came up on R&B and Hip-Hop – I love the mix of rap and R&B on this record. Drake is also a lyrical genius.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

thebandfriday. I just discovered these guys recently and I love the vibe they bring.

Best Song of 2025

I really tried to pick one song off of Saya Gray’s album, but these two are tied in my heart: “…THUS IS WHY (I DON’T SPRING 4 LOVE)” & “LIE DOWN.” Oof. Both of these songs hit so hard for me. The saggy grooves, vocal production, pacing, vocal ad libs, arpeggiating synths. Yes please!

Favorite lyric in “…THUS IS WHY (I DON’T SPRING 4 LOVE)”: “I came to you flesh-toned / Origami, I fold

Favorite lyric in “LIE DOWN”: “I can make your dust turn to sparkle

Best Album of 2025

My favorite album of the year was SAYA by Saya Gray. What an incredible genre-bending work of art. My first time listening to it was late at night walking in Brooklyn. It was cold and there weren’t many people out so I danced all the way home. This album feels like a mirror that reflects hidden parts of myself. It is quirky, soulful, playful, and all over the map in terms of genre. It has liberated me in my personal life & in my creation as a musician. When I was younger, my songwriting used to be a lot weirder. Over time I have refined my work to be more palatable for others, but now I feel inspired to lean into the weird a bit again. Thank you SAYA for inspiring me to celebrate those underappreciated parts of myself. I also had the pleasure of seeing Saya Gray live at Newport Folk Fest this year and she was incredible!

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

I am always discovering new artists that I love, but one that really stands out for me this year is James Bird. James’ sound is reminiscent of Fleet Foxes & Adrianne Lenker – a warm hug that leaves you crying tears simply because you are feeling the bigness of being alive. He activates a deepest part of my soul. Most of his music can be found on Bandcamp or in his private community WhatApp Group called “Lullaby Channel” (one of the greatest music sharing spaces I have ever been a part of). He doesn’t have much music on Spotify, which is also part of what I admire about him so much. He is incredibly creative and intentional with how he shares his music. Seeing him perform live is mesmerizing, like you are under a spell – you enter a timeless space, feel your body melt into the floor, and forget all of your worries. If you have been searching for a new artist to help calm your nervous system and remind you of why it is such a gift to be human, I would wholeheartedly suggest getting acquainted with James Bird.

Best Song of 2025

“Sad and Beautiful World” by Mavis Staples. I’m equally obsessed with Sparklehorse and Mavis Staples, so this song is a perfectly set trap for my ass. Brad Cook produced that whole new Mavis record and it’s amazing. This song hit me like a train.

Best Album of 2025

Caveman Wakes Up by Friendship. I’ve been a Friendship stan for a long time now. My boys ate the Thunder Stone and leveled up in a massive way on this. That’s a beautiful record, by all standards.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Cameron Winter. He’s real good – love that Geese record, love that solo record. There’s a story I really like that he tells ’bout goin’ into VR chat rooms in the pandemic and accidentally walking into one where a couple is gettin’ it on.

Best Song of 2025

Cate Le Bon’s “Is It Worth It? (Happy Birthday)” was the song I probably listened to most in 2025. It’s off the record she put out this year entitled Michelangelo Dying. It’s a slow kaleidoscopic song with beautiful changes and many sections, a little bit proggy, but every moment serves the whole, not one part is superfluous. It is all earned. It makes me very emotional. It feels like consoling oneself under a huge patchwork quilt.

Best Album of 2025

Predictably I’d call the above record the best of the year: Michelangelo Dying. Cate is such a strong producer of her own music among the many other artists she works with, but on her own stuff in particular it is just so cohesive, filled with authentic vision and a clear commitment to exploration. It couldn’t have been made by anyone else. I enjoyed listening to the whole thing in sequence many times in headphones while on tour. It became a little world I escaped to. Great records always feel like a place I can visit, a fully real and singular other world.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

This was the year I finally understood the glory of Bruce Springsteen. To be honest I was never much of a fan before. It was fine but didn’t stick to me except maybe a song or two. But on many long solo drives this year scanning his catalogue became a favorite way to pass the time, especially some of the unreleased stuff like the compilation called Tracks. I think he’s a a sensitive genius. His slow songs and synthy anthems are my favorite zones. My band and I had a very fun time covering “Tougher than the Rest,” for example. And I love the song “Sad Eyes”… there’s so many lesser known gems.

Best Song of 2025

“blade bird” – we love this song by Oklou. The writing and production feel fresh and so nostalgic at the same time. The whole album, “choke enough,” is worth listening to from start to finish.

Best Album of 2025

LOVED by Parcels – A few of us have been longtime Parcels fans, and we got the chance to see them live in Boston this past year. On LOVED, they once again deliver on writing incredibly groovy and danceable songs with mostly live instruments. Moments from this album and live set absolutely inspired moments in our album, Big Talk.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

TILAR – If you’re a fan of our music, you should absolutely check out TILAR. They’re a pop/fusion band from Germany and their music bangs: think Earth Wind and Fire meets Anderson .Paak meets Snarky Puppy. The production and arranging on their 2024 record “Unite and Heal” is epic. Plus, we got to meet a few of them last time we toured in Germany and they’re super nice people!

Best Song of 2025

Blood Orange’s “The Field” (feat. The Durutti Column, Tariq Al-Sabir, Caroline Polachek & Daniel Caesar). Why aren’t we talking about Blood Orange all the time? Ok this song. It’s the strings, the collaboration, the scene setting. I spent a good portion of the year driving, and this song – this full LP – feels true for that sort of road-steady consciousness. And when Caroline Polacheck sings “Sing to me, in the heat of the sun” – I am undone.

Best Album of 2025

Haley Heynderickx and Max García Conover’s What of Our Nature. What of Our Nature is an LP of contemporary protest folk songs and the second collaboration between two dynamic songwriters. I feel it – the sincerity, the alienation, the reality of each situation described. It’s craft at work.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Sister Irene O’Connor – Fire of God’s Love. This reissue of the 1973 album blew my mind. It’s peculiar, it’s analog pop, and it was recorded by two nuns. In 2025, I discovered a lot of great music online, but there’s something to be said for the IRL rec (more please!). In October, I was getting tattooed in the basement of my friend’s house, and he told me about this record that was both catholic and disco. I was so intrigued, I put it on as soon as I got back in my car.

Best Song of 2025

“Love Takes Miles” by Cameron Winter. I know it’s the popular response this year, but I am so incredibly moved by his songwriting. In the first chorus when the bass gets all distorted and then when the low end comes back in for the second half, what a release.

Best Album of 2025

My album of the year is Après coup by Laurie Torres. It came out early on in the year on Tonal Union. I heard the music playing somewhere and had to find out who it was. I listened to this record over and over again all year. Incredible instrumental music.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

This Is Lorelei! I’ve known about Nate’s music for awhile, but this was the year I really dove in. Incredible songwriting and production, really cool team working on it too. Big one in our house!

Best Song of 2025

“The Sofa” by Wolf Alice. One of my all time favourite bands and this song has been on repeat. The harmonies and the fun lyrics. I feel the whole album is them at their best and this song is a masterpiece.

Best Album of 2025

Hers by Matt Maltese. Had the pleasure of seeing him live a few weeks ago and it was one of the best live shows I’ve seen in a really really long time. An album of just simply brilliant songwriting. It is so inspiring.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Cameron Winter. I listened to Heavy Metal on repeat when I went to Austin in March. His production and use of voice is so fresh and unique. I think he’ll be a big musical reference for me going forward.

Best Song of 2025

“Room of Fools” by FKA twigs is my favorite song of 2025 by a mile. This is twigs fully channeling early Björk. No other record this year made me want to go to the club and sweat it out the way EUSEXUA did, and “Room of Fools” is the highlight for me. From the minute the kick drum punches in until the song melts into a Gang Gang Dance style breakdown at the end, it’s a perfect track.

Best Album of 2025

I have been a huge fan of Justin Vernon since the Bon Iver self-titled in 2011, so the six years between i,i and this year’s full-length felt like a lifetime. SABLE, fABLE is without a doubt my #1 album of the year, and the fABLE portion is probably the most joyous Bon Iver has ever sounded. I love the song “Day One” for the way it brings together all his gospel influences, Bruce Hornsby-esqe pianos, and glitchy sampling into a near-perfect example of what makes Justin’s music so great – not to mention the vocal assists from Jenn Wasner and Dijon!

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

My friend Jack insisted I go with him to Zone One at Elsewhere the other week to see a band he had caught by accident earlier this year. That band was Evil Adeline and I was completely blown away by their music. Their album evil, baby, evil is a stunner, with razor sharp pop songwriting that scratches the same itch in my brain as MUNA or Jay Som. They also do a lot of fun vocoder and SP404 trickery on the record that they pull off perfectly in their live show. Don’t sleep on this band!

Best Song of 2025

“East Side Screamer” by Graham Hunt. Been such a big fan of Graham’s ever since we played some of our very first shows with him. The peaks and valleys of this track make this song its own thing; nobody combines melody, chaos, and hooks like Graham.

Best Album of 2025

SISTER by Frost Children. I definitely gravitate to bands that take established sounds and give them a fresh coat of paint; Frost Children do this so seamlessly. While most of the record sounds like it could be a perfect soundtrack for “Project X,” the title track “Sister” is an acoustic banger that evokes childhood nostalgia and leaves no crumbs.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Armlock. Really new to this band but have just been playing their discography on Tidal around the house. Love every single melody – particularly on “Strobe.”

Best Song of 2025

Buick Audra: “Outrun the Rain” by Michael Cleveland & Jason Carter (songwriters: Jimmy Yeary, Terry Herd). The album is my fave of the year and this track is often on repeat for me. Killer chorus, impeccable vocal stacks by Jason Carter with Jaelee Roberts and Vince Gill. The fiddling goes without saying with Michael Cleveland and Jason Carter; they’re perfectly matched. Nashville Bluegrass at its finest.

Jerry Roe: “Blindsides” by Car Bomb. Just the best modern metal band and the one of the only ones moving the genre in cool and exciting new direction. This is one of their best songs ever.

Best Album of 2025

Buick Audra: Carter & Cleveland by Michael Cleveland & Jason Carter. Carter & Cleveland stole the show for me this year; an album that was self-produced and self-released and features some incredible performances by a murderers’ row of our friends and fellow musicians here in Nashville. Absolutely rooting for them to win the Grammy for this record!

Jerry Roe: Private Music by Deftones. Didn’t hear a whole lot that blew my mind this year, so Deftones win by default for making a great, normal-ass record. By that, I mean it’s real guitar sounds from real amps, real drum sounds, no editing and samples, and actual songs from a heavy band. That doesn’t happen much anymore.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Buick Audra: Chloe Fredericks. Chloe Fredericks came on my radar this year with her single, “Something’s Got to Give,” and I was pleasantly surprised! Powerful voice, strong songwriter, knows who she is.

Jerry Roe: Carter & Cleveland. These guys rock and I’m so glad this record has gone far and wide. Lots of great players were involved in this one too.

Best Song of 2025

“Long Way Down” by Lost Leaders. I discovered this song as fall was ending and the first snow arrived. I’d listen to this song on repeat as I walked in Kingston along the railway that follows the Hudson River. I can feel the longing and pain in the song, along with a sense of hope, and that kind of music resonates with me.

Best Album of 2025

Gardens by The Heavy Hours. AJ Yorio produced my second album Freeze Frame, and he is also a co-writer and guitarist in The Heavy Hours. This album is right up my alley with indie sounds and melodies that almost feel like a lost friend.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Tomás Tomás. He is a phenomenal songwriter, producer, and vocalist, and I actually met him on the film side of things. He was the AD for a few of my music videos and has now released his new EP Sweet Sleep with my label Keep Good Company Records. His body of music is a work of art and Sweet Sleep is the perfect music to put on when you crave some alone time.

Best Song of 2025

“Across my jaw” by Dan English. I love this song and have had the melody stuck in my head countless times. Fantastic album and artwork.

Best Album of 2025

Wednesday’s Bleeds. Easy pick. I have been a big fan of Wednesday for years, and this may be my favorite and most quintessential Wednesday album yet (and that’s saying a lot). Karly’s lyrics are un-paralleled. I return to so many different lines in my head from this record, “Bitter Everyday” being probably the top one. This record is one of the few 2025 releases I crave hearing again, and that’s what earns an AOTY spot in my book.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Fish Hunt. This pick is a bit of a re-discovery for me, because I spent a good deal of my 2020 quarantine days listening to their record, Staying Small, but after finally getting to see them play live this past week, I can honestly say I have been inspired in a way that makes me so excited about NYC underground music, yet again. I can’t wait to hear what they put out next, but until then, I urge you to get to a show.

Best Song of 2025

“Bonnet of Pins” by Matt Berninger. I’m a big fan of The National and Matt Berninger and for me this song is up there with “Bloodbuzz Ohio,” “Secret Meeting” and “Sorrow” as one of the greats.

Best Album of 2025

SABLE, fABLE by Bon Iver. This took me a while to fully appreciate, but tracks like “From” and “There’s a Rhythmn” have become firm favourites from the Bon Iver catalogue.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Nation Of Language. Synth heaven.

Best Song of 2025

Ted Lucas – “You’ve Got The Power.” A long lost gem, found at the end of a reel of tape in an unlabelled box from the early 1970s. A song without a beginning or an ending, its like a loop, its all day music. It fades and fades out. It’s organic, occurring naturally in the wild, a true story that is deeply psychedelic and both simple and powerful. We needed this.

Best Album of 2025

Florian TM Zeisig – A New Life. I don’t know any info about the artist but they’ve got a cult-like energy and the album is all chill with weirdly unnatural new age vibes, but beautiful like a reverse meditation and has a Pharoah Sanders tribute and if you triangulate those points with their previous Enya remix album you get the most perfect Venn diagram of the year. Everywhere you turn these days somebody is saying the word stroom and this is why.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

I never really heard Robert Lockwood Jr until this year, although he was born a hundred years ago in Turkey Scratch, Arkansas, I somehow overlooked him. There’s a million blues singers from the early days and you can spend the rest of your life listening to old scratchy acetates where the surface noise is louder than the music but this year I finally found my one, “I’m Gonna Dig Myself A Hole” from 1951, its weird double tracked vocals pull it out of the time stream and lyrics like “the world is in a tangle and I’m gonna stay underground until there ain’t no wars around” place it right now today as a perfectly timed response to the current events overwhelming us all every minute of every day.

Best Song of 2025

Jasmine Levy: “The Sofa” by Wolf Alice. I love the concept of the song so much and after seeing them last week (which was one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen) I’ve been listening on repeat.

Poppy Levy: “Dopamine” by Robyn. It’s telling that a song that came out last month is my song of the year, but the title is genuinely self fulfilling. It’s gone platinum in my headphones.

Best Album of 2025

Jasmine Levy: Lily Allen’s West End Girl was my number 1 this year. To hear her turn such a horrible time into multiple hit songs is very empowering. I respect her a lot!

Poppy Levy: Lorde’s Virgin was my most listened to album, it strikes a rare balance. It’s introspective without feeling depressing. Her self-reflection is grounded by Jim-E Stack’s inventive production, which keeps the record moving even in its most vulnerable moments. An essential listen for anyone going through a canon event.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Jasmine Levy: Chloe Qisha. I had to take tolerance breaks to make sure I didn’t end up hating her single. Catchy, cool and unfortunately relatable. I feel like she’s really in her own lane.

Poppy Levy: My favourite artist that I’ve discovered this year has to be Audrey Hobert. She’s definitely doing her own thing very unapologetically which I find inspiring. I always admire when artists create their own world that they live in.

Best Song of 2025

“Up and Down” by Joshua Burnside. One of those discoveries recently that I wonder how I have not heard of this artist earlier on. I’m usually pulled in by melody first, and this song was no exception. What keeps me coming back are the lyrics, as is the case with most of Joshua’s songs. For me, this song meanders with effortless folky melodies, feeling both light as a feather yet thick with phrases that strike to the core of the heart. It’s over before you know it’s coming. “Death is bright and boomin’, lighter than wren / Softer than a newborn, when life begins again.

Best Album of 2025

With You by Courtney Hartman. The world has only recently been blessed with this new record, released on November 14. After much anticipation (I love Courtney’s music), I have been listening on repeat. It is meticulously crafted, yet holds such a feeling of artistic spontaneity and intuition. Looking at the credits, it is rich with collaboration. So far my favourite tracks are “Like A Woman” and “Can You See,” but this album feels like such a cohesive body of work it is impossible to isolate one song from the rest.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Rupert Bullard. Alright I’m cheating a bit because I technically already knew Rupert from living in Tasmania / lutruwita a few years back. But I had no idea of the music he has been quietly creating until recently. Now, with his heart on his sleeve, Rupert is releasing and touring incredibly beautiful songs intricately connected to his homeland. Listening suggestion: “Stand By The Land.” Goosebumps.

Best Song of 2025

“im not your man” by Junior Mesa. The man never misses for me. New era of his with formant vocals… he’s never not mixing experimental recording techniques with classic songwriting. He weaves between genres effortlessly, always sounds like himself, and typically can’t help himself from adding a maximalist outdo/ bridge section. This song is no exception.

Best Album of 2025

not more than that, but more please by willoh. I’m keeping an eye out on willoh! I’m excited about the world she’s building. The project is cohesive with signature auto tune vocal stacks, DI guitars, and ambient textures. There’s a lot of fresh vocal phrasings and smart arrangement choices.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

SWV. An all-female R&B vocal trio with three incredible albums that were released in the ‘90s. The hooks, vocal stacks, writing themes, and production… I’m floored by their discography. This group CAN SING! The music is sensual and makes you bop your head.

Best Song of 2025

My favourite song of the year has to be Justin Bieber’s “Yukon.” I think that’s a song that I sang over and over again for a good straight month. I even recorded TikToks with me singing it. I was obsessed with that comeback (and the whole Swag album), but I think that song definitely connected with me. I think his voice, the melody, the writing is just 10 out of 10.

Best Album of 2025

That album of the year definitely has to be Lily Allen’s West End Girl, I think as a songwriter you can’t get more of a true, transparent collection of thoughts in the medium of song. The way that she basically wrote what she was thinking and then just put it to melody, I think that’s unreal. Definitely a masterclass in how to write from the heart.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

My favourite artist discovery is Jael Wena. I think she’s incredible. She’s kinda undiscovered and “if you know, you know” at the moment. But I think she’s so talented and I love her vibe and her energy. I’m definitely going to be watching what she does and I’d love to work with her.

Best Song of 2025

Song of the year is “Buckle” by Florence + The Machine. Her lyrics are so clever, the melody is catchy, vocals right up front, dead-honest, baring all, hiding nothing. It is refreshingly vulnerable and her delivery is strong and sweet.

Best Album of 2025

Album of the year has to be 24 Hr Sports by the visionary El Michels Affair, a start-to-finish brilliant work of art. So unique, stylish, adventurous, all over the place and completely focused. There are so many standout tracks and contributions from some of the best musicians on the planet. Everything from the concept to the artwork is executed perfectly… it’ll blow your mind.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

My friend recently took me to see Die Spitz in Nashville, and they were nothing short of ferocious. I went in blind, having heard nothing from their catalogue, and left the show dying for more. They are great musicians, they are political, they woke me the f up, they are the moment.

Best Song of 2025

“mangetout” by Wet Leg. I love the get out of my way energy and the self-awareness around desirability and power. The skillful, subtle changes feel like someone tugging gently on your sleeve saying hey, pay attention, this part is different. And the singer’s phrasing is so smart. I kept catching myself humming it while doing totally unglamorous things like folding laundry or trying to remember why I walked into a room. This song creeps in in the best way.

Best Album of 2025

Never Enough by Turnstile. This record felt like an adrenaline shot straight to the spirit. There’s melancholy, joy, space, and ferocity tangled together in these songs. It reminded me that openness, intensity, and impermanence don’t have to cancel each other out. I put it on whenever I needed to shake the dust off, and it always pulled me right back into my body. Positive and artsy hardcore at its finest. It gives me IDLES’ Joy as an Act of Resistance vibes. That sense of being lifted and pummeled, fists clenched. One of those albums that makes you grateful music exists.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

I had heard of WFYE before, but I got completely sucked in after watching the “Life Signs” video. It was one of those, “Wait, who is this?” moments that don’t happen often enough. A true mid-scroll sit-up-straighter moment where something strange and wonderful starts unfolding right in front of you. I was like “okaaay, you’ve got my attention!” Their whole world feels like art-school chaos that somehow knows exactly what it’s doing. Weird, smart, funny, a little unsettling, completely addictive. The song is smart, catchy, and dissonant in a way that scratches the brain just right. They care AND absolutely do not give a f**k. They make me want to experiment more and take myself less seriously.

Best Song of 2025

My best song of 2025 was “The big goodbye” by AJR. 2025 has been a closing chapter year for me personally. I’ve overcome some things this year that for years I sat on the other side wondering what it was going to feel like to experience. This song to me talks about growing out of your surroundings and moving onto a new chapter of life which is exactly what I’m trying to do myself!

Best Album of 2025

My best album of 2025 was Smoochies by Ashnikko. I always look at texture in a song specifically love music that has so many intricate layers! This album is ICONIC and has been in my car every morning since it dropped. If you want a hype album this one takes the cake!

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

My favourite artist discovery of 2025 is Lola Young. I’ve loved Lola since her early days, but to see her skyrocket this year is incredible. That woman deserves every bit of praise she gets and I am rooting for her all the way! This industry can be tough and Lola has proven so much this year how strong of an artist she is, both in her music and live shows!

Best Song of 2025

“she hurts like tequila” by Cody Johnson ft Carin Leon. Cody Johnson can do no wrong in my book. This song was on repeat for me all the time.

Best Album of 2025

When I write the song by Jake Worthington. As a songwriter, this song really hits. This is pure honesty. It’s not always pretty but it’s always real

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Jake Worthington. I met Jake when I was in Nashville and I really dug into his music. He’s one of the best artists coming out of Nashville. He’s a true artist.

Best Song of 2025

Best song of the year was “Kissing in Public” by Olivia Barton. Just hands down a perfect song. Makes me cry, makes me laugh. Perfect bridge.

Best Album of 2025

Best album of the year for me was Total Cinema by Ken Yates. It’s no skips. It’s heartbreaking in a simple way. Ken’s music flows over you like a river. And after a few listens you realize you’re underwater but you can still breathe. This makes sense I promise. He’s the best.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Best discovery this year was Kumo99. Maybe the coolest thing I’ve ever heard.

Best Song of 2025

“MIXTAPE LINER NOTES VAR. VII” by Frog. I must have listened to this song 1000 the week that album came out. Perfect lyrics and the best sing along chorus of the year no doubt.

Best Album of 2025

The Firetruck Is Running Late by Charlie Johnston. Charlie’s arranging, songwriting and twee indie charm are simply unmatched. She is maybe the greatest songwriter in the world.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

ear. We’re huge fans of Jonah Paz’s previous work with The Barns. His new band ear takes more of an electronic leaning but has his songwriting fingerprints all over it.

Best Song of 2025

“All Night All Day” from Double Infinity by Big Thief. This song sounds so relaxed and loose and also directly in the pocket. No one overplays. It just fits together perfectly.

Best Album of 2025

Where Are We Now? by Winter McQuinn. Multi-Instrumentalist and obvious wrangler of Aussie talent, Winter McQuinn has put together a collaborative album with no fewer than 11 different musicians and vocalists. The songs are smooth, catchy, pop-psych-folk.

If you haven’t checked out McQuinn’s music, start here and then grab the excellent Recently I’ve Been Missing The Color Green from 2024.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

The Beat Goes On by Golomb. I can’t believe I’ve slept on this hometown band for so long – I’ve known Xenia and Hawken (and parents Dave and Melanie) since they were little kids. The Beat Goes on is the second studio album for these Columbus, Ohio youngsters and it rocks with intention and good musical reference points.

I need to get out to more local shows.

Best Song of 2025

So many good songs came out this year, but “Day Old Thoughts” of Arny Margret really stuck throughout the whole year. The way they recorded the drums and how they sound is just ridiculously satisfying. Her soothing voice, with a good story. Perfect.

Best Album of 2025

Ah man, if they could be shared 1st place please; Dog Eared by Billie Marten as the songwriting is so on point. Production been done so tasteful to uplift the stories she’s telling. But also, I really enjoyed SABLE, fABLE as Bon Iver always stays a favourite and keeps amazing me in a very positive way. I love how he’s reinventing his art every time he works on something new. At least that’s how it feels to me. He’s not scared to make bold choices.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

I must say, Olivia Dean is high on the list. But I’m afraid Jacob Alon has the win this one. Their music reminds me of Jeff Buckley, but in their beautiful very own way. I saw them play on a festival just with a guitar this summer, and I was completely blown away by their presence.

Best Song of 2025

It’s genuinely been such a good year for music, so it’s really hard to choose, but one of the songs I couldn’t stop listening to as soon as it hit my headphones was ‘WAZIRA’ by Saint Levant. The instrumental breaks, the flow of the Arabic, it sounds so alive and I genuinely still can’t stop listening. The instruments remind me of some of the music I’d hear around Cairo when I was growing up. It brings me back in such a lovely way.

Best Album of 2025

The Ashnikko album Smoochies. It’s just so so good! It itches something in my brain: the melodies, the consistency of how creative, eclectic and incredible it sounds. I found myself having different favourite songs each time I listened to the album. My favourites at the moment are “Liquid,” “Full Frontal,” and “Baby Teeth.” Her ability to elevate, grow and experiment further with each project is really inspiring.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

I’ve listened to a lot of flowerovlove recently. Her music is so fun and the aesthetic is too. I’ve been really enjoying the various things she emerges from on stage ahaha! She’s so cool: A superstar and I can’t wait to hear more and more.

Also, Julia Wolf. I got into her album PRESSURE then listened to more and its honestly incredible. From the writing, to the Twilight aesthetic (that means everything to me!) – I love the whole aesthetic.

Best Song of 2025

“Money is Everything” by Addison Rae was my song of the summer. Picture the three of us at Rockaway Beach blasting this. And yes – I even got the Addison Rae matcha drink this summer.

Best Album of 2025

Pirouette by Model/Actriz was my favorite album of the year because I listened to it over and over and over. I think this album’s genius lies in its ability to walk the line of being super dancey and accessible while still taking experimental risks with the band’s production styles and sounds. On Pirouette, Model/Actriz continues to build this unique style of no-wave fused electronica magic that is both haunting, beautiful, and, frankly, sooo cunt.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

PARKiNG is a band everyone needs to leave 2025 a fan of. They dropped their debut album, PORTRAiTS, this year and is full of dancey punk and ear-piercing art rock that will replay in your head all day after listening. Everyone needs to be paying attention to the music coming out of the Midwest US right now.

Best Song of 2025

“Gucci Mane” by Jesse Murph. It’s such a great blend of Country and Hip-Hop, with lyrics that feels like home. It’s like Alabama to me.

Best Album of 2025

Teddy Swims, I Tried Everything but Therapy (Part 2). What a voice – he just sounds great on everything. Not many singers can capture honesty and vulnerability the way Teddy can. Looking forward to seeing what he does next.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Medium Build – he’s got honest lyrics, a raw voice, and the passion of his daily life shines through. He’s just a jam packed with musical talent.

Best Song of 2025

“The Mothership” by Alexandra Savior. I’ve been obsessed with everything Alexandra Savior has made since high school, and I think this song illustrates my favorite parts of her sound, while also exploring a lush, dreamy edge compared to the almost “sunbleached” desert-rock vibe of other older releases. The vocals are incredibly satisfying with their clarity against the almost “dazed” guitar tones, and her lyrics are just fantastic.

Best Album of 2025

Florence + The Machine’s Everybody Scream. Hearty, feral, and womanly. I’m no stranger to getting chills to albums, but usually I have a tough exterior and am never affected *too* emotionally by music. Without fail, listening to “Everybody Scream,” “Witch Dance,” and “Drink Deep” will make me break down in tears. Despite being a self-proclaimed “kraken” in the music industry, her commentaries on the combination of womanhood, musicianship, and love feel incredibly real to someone who’s just been starting out in the industry. Florence Welch’s writing is a realm I aspire to reach some day, both ethereal and so grounded it feels sunken in the earth.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Marika Hackman. I’m a bit behind the curve on this one. I’ve always peripherally had Marika Hackman’s work on playlists, however I fully began dissecting her lyrics and sound this year. Marika Hackman writes the most bittersweet and devastating lyrics, burying them in gorgeous soundscapes. Highlights include “Drown,” “Apple Tree,” and “Animal Fear.” Marika Hackman takes you on a journey, lifted on the wings of just gorgeous vocals.

Best Song of 2025

“Shy girl” by Haute and Freddy. I really enjoyed the production of it, it reminded me of being a teenager, has some really nice ’80s pop elements to it that I loved, I liked that it sounds like one of those songs you can day dream to a little bit whilst having a little dancey dance.

Best Album of 2025

At the Beach, in Every Life by Gigi Perez. It’s an unbelievable raw album, very emotional and transparent in such a poetic away, the way its assembled is just gorgeous. Top song on it for me is “Fable” – it’s heartbreakingly beautiful.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Abel Selaocoe. This is music that just radiates all over your body, it’s so vibrant, top two songs for this artist are “Voices of bantu” and “Ka Bohaleng / On The Sharp Side.”

Best Song of 2025

Dove Ellis’ “Pale song.” This song feels totally timeless. It’s only been out for a month or so but I’ve had it on repeat and it’s got me through some tough moments.

Best Album of 2025

Isaia Huron’s Concubania. This is one of those albums where you have a new favourite track every time you listen to it. The songwriting, harmonies and vocals are incredible. Saw him perform it live recently and it was one of the best gigs I’ve seen all year.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Suzy Sheer. We’ve been playing Suzy Sheer a lot in the studio. Their music has insane energy, that’s sometimes almost painful to listen to… in a good way!

Best Song of 2025

“headphones on” by Addison Rae. Every tour needs just one pop song to keep you fresh, nourished, light on your toes… in 2023 for this band it was Sunset by Caroline Polachek and this year it was Headphones On. It just feels good and she did what she needed to do. Will never forget blasting it with the windows down in the Pacifica, or showing the boys the music video in a hotel room in Vermont.

Best Album of 2025

Perfume Genius’ Glory. PG is masterful in his work, his artistry, his performance, and also really funny on Instagram. We’re all big fans here. The lyrics on so many of the songs on Glory are so gutting in a way that feels really inspiring. Really a standout of 2025 for us. What do you get from the stretching horizon that you’d leave me spiraling with no one to hold? ):

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Villagerrr. We’d been fans of Villagerrr before this year, but our joint tour in April 2025 is really where we fell in love. Mark is a really incredible songwriter, he’s always writing about something in a way that makes me just… wonder… (you guys aren’t ready for the new album). The band has so much amazing chemistry too, they’re such rockstars and the care they have for eachother is just really shining through. Really incredible people and we will follow every single thing they do forever.

Best Song of 2025

My favorite song of the year is “PUT IT ONG” by Yeat. The beat on this song is insane, and the synths make me feel like I’m about to get abducted by aliens. I heard the first 30 seconds and immediately ordered the CD.

Best Album of 2025

Evangelic Girl Is a Gun by Yeule released this year might just be one of my favorite albums ever. The lyricism, synths, and melodies are addicting, and these songs captivate me in a way I haven’t felt in a while.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Magdalena Bay is my favorite artist discovery of 2025. I found them while I was on tour in the UK, and I listened to their entire discography for hours while we drove from venue to venue.

Best Song of 2025

“The Field” by Blood Orange. I’ve always been a casual Blood Orange fan. I saw the video pop up on YouTube one day, clicked it, and was absolutely floored. The music and production took me on a journey that made me instantly emotional even without really making out the lyrics the first time through. I played the song back immediately, which is rare for me. I’ve been dissecting the production ever since.

Best Album of 2025

Always Been by Craig Finn. One of my favorite songwriters doing an album in LA with the War on Drugs as his backing band? It’s like this album was made specifically for me. Craig’s storytelling is still untouchable, and having the songs blast off into full-fledged rock songs is such a joy. I would’ve loved to have seen that record being made.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Snocaps. This was another random YouTube find. I was bored and clicked on a lyric video for “Coast.” The song kicked in and I realized it was the Crutchfield sisters and I was sold. I’ve been listening to the album nonstop for the past month.

Best Song of 2025

So much great music came out this year that it’s very very hard for me to pick, but I’m going to say Now, Now’s “Talk To God” is my current favorite song of the year. I’ve loved these guys for a long time, and they supported us for part of one of our tours a while back. They hadn’t released anything as a band for a very long time, and then this song came out and I was like wow, the wait was worth it. Melancholy, heartbreaking and yet head-bopping in all the best ways.

Best Album of 2025

Haerts’ album Laguna Road is just such a special album, and yes I’m probably biased because Nini & Benny are dear friends of ours and we’ve worked together a lot over the years. We had nothing to do with this album other than hearing it in-progress, but I really think they made their best album with this one. It’s short, only 8 tracks long, but the level of emotional depth just gets us every time. I think every time me & Patti listen to it we’re in tears at some point. The songwriting is almost painfully honest, the recording and production is understated, cinematic and beautiful… really just the epitome of a mature record. I’m so inspired to see friends still releasing inspired and inspiring music after so long.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

I’m gonna say Fabiana Palladino. The album I discovered of hers came out last year (simply titled ‘Fabiana Palladino’), but I discovered her this year. In many ways it feels like the perfect sorta blue eyed no-soul record. It has a bit of an adult contemporary vibe, but in all the best ways. Adult contemporary sorta has a bad rep, some people call it ‘sophista pop’ but I also like the term adult contemporary because it feels less pretentious, haha. Anyway, Fabiana really killed it with this record. It’s a great late night listen, the production is beautiful and interesting, the themes are mature and run deep and her dad (Pino Palladino) pops in on bass duties which just takes things to an even groovier place. Oh, and Jai Paul had a hand in the production. Also, not many people know this but Fabiana co-wrote a few tracks on Lorde’s new album. Highly recommended.

Best Song of 2025

My best song of the year was “Mind Loaded” by Blood Orange, it really blew me away. When Caroline and Lorde come in with those harmonies I get shivers.

Best Album of 2025

Big city life by Smerz has been my number one companion this year. It really sounds like they had fun making this record, there’s so much awkward femme energy which I love. My top pick on this album is “Feisty”!

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

I heard an artist called Jerome Blazé for the first time this year, specifically his song “Emerge (For Sarah),” but everything he does is incredible!

Best Song of 2025

“OVID” by Annie DiRusso. I had been so excited for her new record Super Pedestrian and I was on tour doing a long drive the day it came out. When OVID came on as the opening track my jaw was on the floor, like completely in awe. It just gives me energy. It’s so catchy and heavy in the perfect way, the production is so whimsical and fun. It embodies a lot of the sounds and vibes I had thought about while I was making my new record Peak Experience, so it felt like it was made in a lab for me specifically.

Best Album of 2025

I loved so many albums this year but I think I gotta give it to Who’s The Clown by Audrey Hobert. It’s a masterclass in songwriting across such a wide spectrum. Her writing is so smart and funny and it’s just truly her. There is literally no shame or pretentiousness, there’s like a child-like purity to it. It’s been so inspiring to see her succeed because of how real she is.

It kinda contains the full spectrum of human emotion, she’s gut-punching me one second and then making me laugh and then making me want to dance alone in my room, and it all lives together in a very not forced way. I love how varied the production is, every song is truly its own moment. It feels like the goal was just to do every song the absolute most justice which is what they all deserve. Nothing is overcooked, it’s all just exactly how it’s supposed to be whether it’s a minimalist acoustic moment or full-on early 2000s radio pop song. It’s everything.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Boko Yout. I discovered Boko Yout through a recommended video on YouTube and I thought the thumbnail looked crazy so I clicked on it. It was the music video for “GUSTO” and I watched it like four times and then started listening to the record a lot. I have probably listened to “DEMOLITION MAN” like 200 times, I don’t know what to say about it besides it is so f**king cool. It makes me feel like I’m in a movie.

Best Song of 2025

My favorite song this year was “she want” by campthehills. There’s not a lot to it, but it’s filled with infectious melodic moments and a really great palate of sounds. Kind of perfectly made to be repeated, I played the hell out of it.

Best Album of 2025

I really loved the Wet Leg record, Moisturizer. “Davina McCall” is probably a perfectly written song for me and my tastes. I was so bummed when I couldn’t get to see their show because we were on a tour of our own. They’ve been a band to admire since they debuted; I’ve always been addicted.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

We recorded an album in Los Angeles back in August and had a guy named Daniel help out with the recording. He’s in a band called garbagebarbie and I started habitually playing all their stuff after he was so cool and friendly. I’ll throw them on a lot now, especially the song “kiss” and I’m itching to get back over to LA soon so I can see them live. It seems like they’re playing some sick shows over there right now.

Best Song of 2025

“Bounce House” by Gelli Haha. Surreal, cathartic, and fun as hell, this is an incredible debut single from an artist and label that we go way back with. Sam and I grew up listening to Hanni El Khatib, and one of our very first shows outside of Oregon was booked by Gelli herself. We’re very excited to keep watching this project blow up.

Best Album of 2025

Noble and Godlike in Ruin by Deerhoof. Very few artists can claim amazing and groundbreaking music across multiple decades. Deerhoof is one of them, as they consistently push themselves to make cooler and cooler music. The album is catchy, chaotic, touching, and manages to take exhilarating turns that I haven’t heard in their massive discography.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

YHWH Nailgun – Rising out of and above a busy and robust NYC experimental/art/noise scene, YHWH Nailgun makes primal futurism a feeling. Minimal arrangements, uncanny valley guitars, hyperactive drums, and singing that channels Frodo’s horror when he wears the ring make this band stand out above the noise. Their Treefort performance this year was captivating as it was off-putting, and their debut, 45 Pounds, is definitely one of our favorites of this year.

Best Song of 2025

Samantha Crain’s “Gumshoe” – was a tie between this and “Cherry Plum,” which hits me in all kinds of ways. But I find myself listening to the version of this with Kimya Dawson a little bit too much. Something about it. Sometimes when I start my car it just comes on. It keeps creepin’ up on me and finding its way to the closest pair of speakers.

Best Album of 2025

Getting Killed by Geese. It’s a really good record.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Lorelle Meets the Obsolete – Not sure how I discovered them, but I became pretty obsessed with them and particularly their album Datura this year. One of those records that I put on and by the end of it I’ve already sent it to 10 people.

Best Song of 2025

Jordan Dunn-Pilz: “Praise” by Panda Bear. This song sent me for a loop for months. Each time you think the song can’t get any better, another section comes in to one-up the last. I love how under this happy sing-a-long tune is the a story of a father desperately trying to connect with his son. A song with layers!

Dan Alvarez de Toledo: Favorite track of the year has to be “playing classics” by water from your eyes. This is just the kind of music I wish we were smart enough to make. It’s so representative of NYC and I think that makes it all the better. That whole album is fantastic so honestly listen to it ALL!

Best Album of 2025

Dan Alvarez de Toledo: I would have to say my favorite record of the year is kind of an unfair answer since it came out late 2024, but I feel like that should count since most of these lists happen so late (I also see so many people talk about that Cameron Winter album as a 2025 record but that’s also 2024!!!). I’m pretty enamored with 22° Halo’s Lily of the Valley. This record feels so profoundly meditative to me. It’s flooded with this kind of sunshine-y sadness that feels like it takes me over. I can’t recommend this band enough!

Jordan Dunn-Pilz: My most listened to album this year was The Count by Frog. My brain space is occupied by serious and deeply reflective thoughts about music 90% of the time, so its very important for me to have something I can listen to that makes me feel good and turn that part of my brain off for a little. They inspire me to have fun and experiment more.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Jordan Dunn-Pilz: They’re not new, but I really enjoyed Dutch Interior’s Moneyball. Between them and Frog, it feels like the doors are wide open for experimental folk rock. I appreciate that the overall mood of songs can shift between the multiple songwriters.

Dan Alvarez de Toledo: My favorite new artist this year has got to be Dutch Interior. I love finding good music and then diving into old releases and comparing all the music. It’s nice to go backwards!

Best Song of 2025

“Marble Walls” by Tara Clerkin Trio. I just love this one. I ran into my friend Joe on the train one day and he gave me a few recs – “Marble Walls” was one of them. The track feels both modern and timeless. It’s such a great example of meshing organic and synthetic. We should all take notes. A great song feels like a gift and this one carried me all year.

Best Album of 2025

Your Day Will Come by Chanel Beads. This one came out in 2024, but I think it’s still living strong in 2025. This thing is an ALBUM. Front to back it takes you on a journey. It’s bold, innovative, and so so genuine. Some of my favorite music is film scores and string compositions so naturally this one hits a sweet spot. It’s inspired me to take more risks and I’m so grateful for that.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

a.s.o. This is a damn shame because I heard they broke up, but it’s a really great one and done group if that’s the case. “My baby’s got it out for me” is one of the sickest tracks ever. So many moments where I’m like what the f*** how did they come up with that?

Best Song of 2025

“hang on the wall what you kill” by emory. This song is addictive. It’s sort of a fusion between hyper-pop and folk. The lyrics are evocative and nostalgic, it’s the perfect song.

Best Album of 2025

Big city life by Smerz has to be my album of the year. There’s a song for every mood, with soundscapes that float and ponder and implore you to dance.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Emily Hines. Her songs are otherworldly, honest, and effortless. Her song “Cowgirl Suit” tore me apart. Definitely check it out.

Best Song of 2025

Shizu: “Would You Like One?” by Travis Japan. It’s a pop, bright song that really feels like Travis Japan. It was used as the theme song for the movie Tabekko Doubutsu THE MOVIE, and it fits the film perfectly!

Machu: One of our own songs, “Welcome To Our Show Tonight.” Jazz- and theater-style songs are one of our strengths, and in the past we’ve expressed that side with Travis Japan songs like “Swing My Way” and others with a jazz taste. With this year’s album, we were able to express a song that really says, “This is Travis Japan.” I’d be happy if lots of people could listen to it.

Shime: “Muchuu” by BE:FIRST. I love the lyrics, and since BE:FIRST has a strong image of dance music, it felt fresh to hear them really sing a solid, medium-tempo ballad. It feels like the lyrics come straight through. Their vocals are wonderful, and I often listen to it in the morning on my way to work.

Best Album of 2025

Shizu: Our album VIIsual! Every song is something you never get tired of, and the more you listen, the more you want to replay it. Not only the music, but also our “VIIsual” side – please enjoy that as well.

Machu: ’s travelers. I was involved in producing this album. I think it really showcases Travis Japan’s strengths. It’s a packed album filled with our fighting spirit, sense of challenge, and ambition, so I hope many people will listen to it.

Shime: Dai Hirai’s EP. I listen to it in the morning as well. All the songs feel like love songs, and they really lift my spirits. I like songs that get me energized in the morning.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Shizu: I really like “Watakushigoto” by Kocchi no Kento. The choreography is easy to learn and catchy, and we even got to film a TikTok together. I absolutely love Kocchi no Kento’s singing voice.

Machu: The Jonas Brothers. While producing ’s travelers, I searched for and researched a lot of different music. I’ve always liked some of their songs, and lately I’ve been really into them. I especially like “Summer Baby” – even though it’s winter, I still listen to it.

Shime: “Zutto Zutto” by FANTASTICS. It came up on shuffle, and I thought it was really good and added on my playlist.

Earlier this year, Truman Sinclair solidified his solo star status with his debut indie album American Recordings, released via R&R. With smart, folk-fueled singles like “Black Train” and “Joel Roberts” – and fan-favorites like “Bloodline” – the 10-song set represented a clear step forward, showcasing the 23-year-old’s striking talent for crafting and performing songs that feel as achingly earnest as they do worthy of playing on repeat. A Chicago-bred, L.A.-based singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer, Sinclair’s artistry melds slack vocals, vivid storytelling, and a raw-yet-realised sound. A buzzing solo artist, he’s also known for playing with the alternative act Fat, Evil Children, and for founding the cult-beloved farwest emo outfit Frat Mouse. Sinclair recently made his major label debut via Capitol Records / Polydor Label Group with the song “dustland,” marking the start of a bold new era in his career.

Best Song of 2025

My favorite song that came out this year was probably “meet me at the river” by auwbe and aldn – it’s so good and always puts me in a special place.

Best Album of 2025

Love yourself or die ! by aidan robinson!!! My good friend’s amazing record. It is so simple and wonderful and has great songs

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

I saw jake xerxes fussell play at end of the road festival in the UK this year – I got to meet him backstage and have been listening to his music ever since.

Building out his upcoming debut album, Children of Divorce, Valley Boy (James Alan Ghaleb Amaradio) has interwoven his own stories with other children brought up similarly, leaving room for both the jagged edges and the feathery perimeters. As a child of divorced parents himself, he shares that the concept album, “contains true stories from real kids who grew up and some who didn’t.” Weaving together stirring vignettes from his childhood and of the people who made it up, Valley Boy agonizes over each detail to bring these “real kids” to life with personal morsels that feel like the kinds of things that can only be uncovered through years of therapy and self-discovery. The upcoming album has jagged edges, but just like in life, the feathery moments in between make it all the more worth the journey.

Best Song of 2025

Other than “Christmas Angel” by Delacey (which would apply for specifically best Christmas song of the year), and ruling out older songs (I’ve been rinsing “I Woke Up In A Strange Place” by Jeff Buckley on all morning runs for a while and I recommend it to anyone and everyone and especially people who love Jeff), I’m at a four way tie and if you’re not disqualifying me yet then let me cook for a second and tell you this is a four way tie.

One, I am deeply in love with the extremely slept on band Sex Week, and their song “Coach” off of their new EP Upper Mezzanine is amazing (the whole thing is) but I specifically encountered that song in Paris this summer while Delacey and I were beginning to work on our second Honeymooners record and I remember hearing that song and then nearly blowing up everything we’d recorded because that Sex Week song was so good to me.

Two, I am late to the party but I discovered Wednesday this year and they sound like the kind of cathartic release of anger that usually takes years of therapy and specifically their song “Wound Up Here (By Holdin On)” is so very good and I love the dry up front single vocal and the guitar distortion and kind of everything they do and listening to that track unlocked something in me and helped me finish a song I was working on for basically two years for my new upcoming record, Children of Divorce.

Three, I first heard the artist Daffo last year and I was immediately smacked by their music and songwriting and their song “Absence Makes The Heart Grow” is a perfect song to me. I love its genre blend and its energy and to me it’s a perfect ball of wit and angst and it’s really catchy. It gets stuck in my head weekly.

Four, “Incomprehensible” by Big Thief and I hesitate to add this because it’s almost not fair how impossibly good Big Thief is and Adrienne Lenker is and I am completely unable to dislike their music and this song specifically wrecked me. I heard it when I was at a real low about growing older and I was absolutely baffled by Adrienne’s optimism in the lyrics about growing a year older and I felt she helped lead me into accepting my own age with this song. Fun fact, she and I were in the same ensemble in the Berklee Five Week Program and I can tell you she was amazing even then and also was one of the nicest and most genuine people I’ve ever encountered.

Five (why trust me at all at this point?), I’m not biased even though she’s my wife, and the song “Lipstick” by Delacey is a perfect song to me. It was my top song this year and I love every word and every texture and every choice and it remains one of my favorite songs forever. If I could kiss this song I would.

Best Album of 2025

I think when talking albums, I was most drawn to Cameron Winter’s record Heavy Metal but it’s technically a 2024 record (though I really listened in 2025). His voice and his lyricism is totally singular to me and the mixing and production decisions on the record were so refreshing and yeah I don’t know how but I spent a good month listening to that record at the gym which was a weird send because half of the record is pretty downtempo and ballady but whatever he’s doing really does something for me. I kind of hate him for being so f***ing good but I’m also very glad he exists to set the bar even higher for everyone (but then hate him for doing so and the vicious cycle continues!).

If that record doesn’t count, I’m sure you wouldn’t allow me to count the Jeff Buckley record Mystery White Boy either and you’re going to think I’m totally biased if I pick my wife’s album Crying Over Beauty even though every song is perfect and it’s my most listened to record this year and it’s a fantastic blend of Mazzy and Cocteau flavored indie, then my number one favorite album of 2025 was Japanese Breakfast’s album For Melancholy Brunettes (and Sad Women). I’ve been a J Brekkie fan for years but this is by far my favorite album of theirs which is really extra inspiring – I love when an artist gets better and better. This album spent two months at the top of the charts in my household and there are no skips (though the Jeff Bridges feature took a second to grow on me) and the production and playing by Blake Mills and whoever else was involved is gorgeous and immaculate. The musical equivalent to the Botticelli Michelle Zauner references in “Orlando In Love.”

Oh, this is also an honorable mention, but Saya Gray’s album SAYA is also amazing.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

I’m a little late on both accounts but tie me between Cameron Winter and Saya Gray. Both fantastic and different approaches to song craft and singing and production but both really f***ing rock and shook my brain in a great way.

Actually, I have to add Wednesday in there too. I can’t follow these rules and also everyone is a winner and I bet if I had a few more minutes I wouldn’t narrow this list down further I’d just keep expanding it because there are so many beautiful artists in the world right now and it’s really rewarding to take a second to meditate on all of them and if I could thank each in person I would and also thank you for taking the time to ask these questions and read them I’m sure you love music like I do and even if we never meet we’re friends now. Love you.

Rising Glimmer Rock artist (and Atwood favorite) Vienna Vienna enjoyed a blockbuster 2025 with the viral success of his single “God Save The Queens,” a defiant celebration of queer identity that amassed over one million streams and sparked a wave of fan support. Now entering a new era with his upcoming Entertain Me EP, Vienna Vienna leans into groove-driven production and sharp, self-aware songwriting. Singles like “Idle Hands” and “Company Hunting” showcase his blend of 80s pop energy, modern indie rock, and introspective lyricism, including collaborations with hit songwriter Justin Tranter. Confident, cathartic, and a little bit chaotic, Vienna Vienna continues to build a world where strangeness is celebrated and community comes first.

Best Song of 2025

My song of the year was “AT&T” by Liquid Mike! The mix blew my mind and the tones are unbelievable. Brought me back to a time when my angst was more palpable.

Best Album of 2025

I can’t stop listening to Rarely Do I Dream by Youth Lagoon! Some of my favorite writing ever. So delicate and beautiful. My favorite line on the record is “Every cemetery is a motel for the ones we couldn’t save.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

I discovered this band Girl Scout through a friend this year and I’m obsessed, their EP Headache is a feast. “Honey” and “Headache” are my favorites from it. Amazing songwriting and the energy is unmatched. What a killer voice too!!

After more than a decade apart, critically-acclaimed Texan indie pop/rock band Voxtrot have reconvened with a renewed sense of purpose. Their new album Dreamers In Exile is set to come out in early 2026, marking the band’s first full-length release in 18 years!

Best Song of 2025

“L.B. Files: Igiul” by Abel Selaocoe & Manchester Collective. This collaboration between South African cellist/vocalist Abel Selaocoe and Manchester Collection is my kind of classical — emotional, sophisticated, dynamic…it feels simultaneously old and new (I guess you could say eternal). I’ve tried to find out more about the origin of the song, but to no avail. Alas, I shall be content to remain in the mystery.

Best Album of 2025

Teeth of Time by Joshua Burnside. I was introduced to Northern Irish artist Joshua Burnside via his song “Marching Round The Ladies.” His is a very intimate kind of folk music, which, especially as the weather turns cold, brings me back to my days living in Glasgow. For any particularly pedantic readers out there, I’m aware that Glasgow is not in Ireland 🙂 But there is a consistent aesthetic between Scotland and Ireland, which is near and dear to my heart.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Model/Actriz. To my ears, their music is totally fresh and unique. Obviously, there are parallels with some early Mute artists, but overall I feel like it stands in a room of its own. Also, it makes me very happy to see a queer frontman receiving so many accolades. I still need to see them live!

2025 saw the release of Australian soul powerhouse WILSN’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Bloom.

Best Song of 2025

It’s a tie for me between Olivia Dean’s “So Easy (To Fall In Love)” and “Let Alone The One You Love.” Both feel timeless and emotionally precise in a way that really stayed with me.

Best Album of 2025

The Art of Loving by Olivia Dean. It’s warm, intentional, and beautifully written from start to finish.

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Mk.gee. His sound feels fresh and genre-bending, but still deeply soulful and emotional.

International alt-rock band Yumi Zouma are gearing up to release their fifth studio album, No Love Lost to Kindness, in early 2026!

Best Song of 2025

Charlie Ryder: “August Moon” by Jacob Alon” or “Playing Classics” by Water In Your Eyes or “Candy” by Claudia Valentina, “Love Takes Miles,” or one of the hand ones (i.e. “Back Of My Hand” by Horse Vision or “Take Me By The Hand” by Oklou & Bladee).

Josh Burgess: BLACKPINK – “Jump.” I’m not claiming to be a massive Blackpink or even Kpop fan, but something about this song is so infectious. The production is so tight, the vocals are immaculate, and, of course, being a child of the ‘90s, the Spice Girls hold a special place in my heart and ears!

Christie Simpson: “Past Life” by Mim Jensen, a fellow artist from Ōtautahi, New Zealand, our hometown.

Best Album of 2025

Charlie Ryder: Headlights by Alex G or Big City Life by Smerz.

Josh Burgess: It’s A Beautiful Place by Water For Your Eyes. This album and band gripped me in a way I wasn’t expecting! It’s fun, it’s poignant, it’s genre-blending. Sometimes the best records are ones you didn’t even know you wanted to hear!

Christie Simpson: Te Whare Tīwekaweka by Marlon Williams or Light hit my face like a straight right by Mallrat,

Favorite Artist Discovery of 2025

Charlie Ryder: Bassvictim or Fat, Evil Children.

Josh Burgess: Ian Dury’s “Reasons To Be Cheerful, Pt. 3.” This was a rediscovery at The Loft in New York (iykyk!). It always reminds me of my late stepfather. We used to listen to him a lot. This was one of the last songs we listened to together before he passed and it hit me on the dance floor like a ton of bricks.

Christie Simpson: Eli – best pop music I’ve heard in forever.
