Do you believe in romance?

Falling in love is a universal feeling critical to the human experience.

While music about falling in love is nothing new, not every ballad is about sweeping your boo off of their feet. Some view love as a hindrance. It’s a feeling which unnecessarily wastes your time and energy, especially when those romantic feelings are not reciprocated.

For singer Orion Sun, unreciprocated love is perceived as a sickness which consumes their entire being; she can’t shake it no matter how hard she tries. It’s sad, pitiful, and all consuming – but it feels so good.

Ninety-three miles ’til I touch down, hail Mary
Hope I see you out, baby, it’s a long shot
crazy, I know
Hoping that I’m gon’ see you around
You got me singing in the rain
Purple rain, I’m in pain,
you don’t love me the same

I’m crying all alone again
Pitiful, pitiful, pathetic, I don’t regret it, no

Misty synthesizer chords seep underneath an alluring muted guitar passage to set up a smoky backdrop for Orion Sun’s vocals. Even with a small dynamic range, the singer gets a lot of mileage out of her soft spoken and calming vocal performance which is nothing if not captivating. After the brief intro comes a laid-back drum beat which adds a head bobbing quality to the instrumental, calming the listener amidst Sun’s colorful yet distressing imagery.

‘Cause this love, any love, any love,
any love don’t last too long

It’s a miracle that love even happens at all
We should hold it close, don’t miss any moments
‘Cause you know, yeah, you know
that love will soon be gone
Took a visit to the past
We was just fragile beings lying in the grass
You was holding my hand
We could feel the Earth
spinning ’round and ’round

The soft and cloudy sound of the music is enhanced by Orion Sun’s thoughtful lyricism. Images of a plane touching down, angels in heaven, and the earth’s rotational axis create a feeling of being lost in the clouds. Sun urges her loved one to “hold it close,” as she desperately seeks to revel in the passion. Although the singer is thoroughly entranced by her love interest, she can’t shake the feeling of sickness: “Pitiful, pathetic, I don’t regret it.”

And ’round and ’round again
Swear you were Heaven-sent
Do you believe in romance?
I never meant to cause you any sorrow
You got me singing in the rain
Purple rain, I’m in pain,
you don’t love me the same

I’m crying all alone again
Pitiful, pitiful, pathetic,
I don’t regret it, no

Lush, weightless, and thoughtfully infatuating, “Sick” perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being in love.

And while the song’s message may feel sappy or dated, Orion Sun’s authenticity allows the music to successfully bypass any feelings of staleness. Through vivid production, fun lyricism, and a stellar vocal performance, “Sick” stands tall as a fun and entrancing example of a modern love song.
