Hailed as the “Prince of Soul Jazz,” New Jersey-based saxophonist, producer and composer Nick Stefanacci shows why he’s earned that title on his seductive single “Midnight Affair.”

Highlighting true musicianship, the instrumental feels old school, taking things back to a simpler time where the strength of the performance speaks for itself. Over four minutes and 26 seconds, the music captivates listeners through its mesmerizing saxophone melody, groovy bass line and sultry synths.

Inspired by Quincy Jones, the song perfectly bottles a romantic, late-night mood with Stefanacci sharing, “‘Midnight Affair’ is a love story that never happens, but the chase is all night, and it simply embraces that quintessential Quincy Jones/MJ shuffle magic.” The song exudes a mystery and allure that comes during those moonlit hours.

Stefanacci’s saxophone has plenty of attitude in “Midnight Affair,” cutting through the arrangement and taking on the role of a vocalist. Lyrical and fluid, its creamy, sensual tone carries a slight sassiness, with Stefanacci maintaining tight control over every note. As the track develops, he explores a higher register, moving from smooth, swinging phrases into clearer, more piercing bursts that gradually intensify into a final crescendo.

In the last few seconds, that energy suddenly falls away, leaving behind a softer, reedier tone. Accompanying Stefanacci throughout the track are perfectly placed brass sections that complement rather than compete with the lead, as well as a brooding bassline which anchors the track and gives the saxophone space to wander. The drums emit an unhurried, toe-tapping groove, while flashes of distinctly ’80s synths, first heard in the track’s opening notes, add another layer of character.

With eight albums under his belt, some may call Stefanacci a music veteran. His debut All for a Reason was back in 2012 and was an impressive first release demonstrating his versatility as an artist. Over the years, his music has continued to wow audiences, not only for his impressive saxophone skills, but also for his ability to create something completely unique with each album offering their own distinct sonic universe.

“Midnight Affair” is taken from Stefanacci newest album, Right Here, Right Now, which sees him taking creative control throughout the entire process, resulting in it being one of his most personal records to date.

Having written, arranged, mixed, mastered and produced the nine-track album himself, it is the perfect example of his dynamic abilities and self-awareness as an artist. The universe he created within Right Here, Right Now is all about authenticity, showcasing exactly who Stefanacci is in this current moment, after decades of exploration and lessons learned along the way.

His 2012 album wasn’t even close to the beginning of his musical career. In fact, Stefanacci began performing at just 16 years old and it’s those years of experience that shine through in his sound today. Along the way, his career has opened the door to some incredible opportunities, sharing the stage with the likes of Derek Trucks, Ja Rule, Motown legends The Four Tops and legendary drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie.
