Few things capture adolescence like learning to drink and scrolling on social media—the diary of the 2010s. While each medium offers a different way to snapshot our night outs and document our feelings, as a collection they’ve made pen and paper redundant for many of us. And drinking is a rite of passage for any youngster, right? Liverpool’s STONE’s debut single “Leave It Out” captures the pros and pains of these two coming-of-age hobbies with the ferocious urgency that only youth can provide.

Leave It Out – STONE

’Leave It Out’ was crafted with our social media-driven youth in mind, it’s an ode to growing up with your whole adolescence years taking place at the bottom of a bottle,” STONE told Atwood Magazine. Despite this bleak outlook, the song does offer a fleeting, foreboding sense of hope. “But it’s okay though cause you have your mates, your phone, and the whole night ahead of you…

Opening with an infectious bass line that vibrates the walls of your soul and powerful, pulsating drums, it quickly launches into a catchy, Brit-pop sounding chorus. The refrain is simple but desperate—both in words and delivery.

Just leave it out
Everything is moving along
I tried to fix it
I couldn’t, it was done from the start

Where STONE’s potential really explodes into plain sight, however, is the brash, spoken-word verses that depict the troubled side of growing up in 2020. Delivered like a friend consoling you during a staggering walk between bars, the tar-thick Scouse accent permeates his starkly honest life view.  The catchiness of Britp-pop is constant through the track, keeping it from becoming too heavy and allowing the diary-like lyrics to slam hard and fast.

Now it’s 3am and you don’t even know your own name
Third time this week mate,
That’s your life going down the drain
Searching for love on these cold dark streets,
All you’re going to find is an empty heart and minus seventy and card receipts
So you’re looking for the cure for loneliness?
I can’t tell you a little clear bag won’t help you.
Oi boys, anyone wanna come to this bar with me?
C’mon lad, it’s 5am, time to get a taxi

“Leave it out” is a blistering anthem for every night out you only remember because of your insta-stories, a face-melting ode to the friends who were there making the bad decisions right beside you. And like those times, it’s fast-paced, hectic, and fun as hell.
