“It’s Amazing to Be Young” – Fontaines D.C.

Optimism can be a difficult thing to come by authentically.

In some sense, it’s almost easier to trick yourself into feeling it, particularly as a young person in the world today. With so much of the world experiencing turmoil and unrest, all people are looking for is reassurance that youth remains something to be lauded and praised despite it all. “It’s Amazing To Be Young” does just that and serves as an uplifting reminder that to be young and to hold onto the innocence that comes with it, is a gift.

Despite its simplicity both thematically and lyrically, the track is outstanding and just further proves that Fontaines D.C. is undoubtedly one of the most impactful and resonant bands at the moment.

It’s the cost
That brings you down
But it’s amazing
To be young

Running throughout the track is this little thread of nostalgia that connects the theme of the song to its instrumentation and the delivery perfectly, edging the song into the territory of brilliance. While the song both begins and ends with an understated music box, lullaby-adjacent quality (as portrayed in the accompanying music video), the upbeat drums, backing duh, do, do, do, do, dos that come in during the bridge, and vivacious tone of the guitars allow the song to exude and capture an unmatched sense of joy in being alive.

Sonically, there’s something very The Cure and The Smiths about it- think “Just Like Heaven” meshed with “Pretty Girls Make Graves.” Of course, with the added bit of something that can only be attributed to Fontaines D.C. Though it’s been released as somewhat of a footnote to the band’s Romance era, the song feels like a connection back to it all. There are elements of the track that fashion the song into the perfect culmination of all that was built during Romance. The album began with a question of “Maybe romance is a place / For me and you” and proceeded to go on a sonically diverse journey dissecting a range of related ideas and emotions. Now if we consider this new track as the proverbial end to the project, then “It’s Amazing To Be Young” seemingly answers the question- yes, romance is a place for me and you.

Regardless of whatever is going on in the world, romance, specifically youthful romance is something to be looked at and appreciated fondly.

Sometimes I wake up and it’s dark
Perform the ritual that puts me in the part
But I sang them every word I had
Seems like they’re never gonna understand
That the cost
Brings you down
But it’s amazing
To be young

Fontaines D.C. Drummer Tom Coll Talks Dracula, Dystopian Films, and Irish Trad Music

:: INTERVIEW ::

Since the release of Skinty Fia and especially since Romance, Fontaines D.C. have established themselves as a prolific, generationally transcendent class act worthy of endless praise and respect.

Their understanding of the craft of music is evident, and even more so their ability to create such a cohesive project is just remarkable. Not to mention the band’s commitment to the aesthetic, as their use of visuals is spellbinding.

All this to say, there is something so authentic about Fontaines D.C., they truly envelop and capture the essence of what it is and what it means to be alive, and know in the moment of experiencing it all (foreboding sense of doom, unadulterated joy, confusion, frustration, passion and all) that you are alive.

From their overall approach to music to their devotion to such precise, rounded-out delivery that we have seen through Romance and in their career thus far, it is easy to say that Fontaines D.C. are proving “It’s Amazing to Be Young” if only to see what more they have in store!

But it’s amazing
To be young
