“To be honest (SG Lewis remix)” – Christine and the Queens
Christine and the Queens has returned with another intoxicating collaboration. “To be honest” was the first single released from Christine and the Queens’ PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE, an album inspired by Tony Kushner’s Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes.
Those motifs of “love, betrayal, abandonment, religion, forgiveness, friendship, and the supernatural” appear throughout Christine and the Queens’ project, including “To be honest,” a song where the narrator seeks love despite their fears and faults.
“Broken and yet tender,
Always in and always out,
Heading to the water,
Drowning in what it can hide, hide,
Kind of always cautious,
Don’t you, don’t you break my heart,
Feeling kind of loveless,
Yet always ready to try.”
– “To be honest,” Christine and the Queens
It feels like yearning for something unattainable, both lyrically and musically. The March 2023 single sounds analogous to a ballad, sharing tropes of other introspective, intentional, beloved originals in his discography.
Months after the track debuted, Christine and the Queens partnered with SG Lewis to release a dance/electronic remix. The DJ previewed this collaboration in mid-August to a live audience, also posting a snippet on Instagram. “To be honest (SG Lewis Remix)” became available on major streaming platforms on August 31.
“The original of this song is a song that I connected with so much, that I was almost nervous to touch it – however it had such a depth of feeling that made it such a natural fit for the dancefloor, and I’m so happy with how it turned out,” SG Lewis said in a statement.
This re-imagined adaptation featured the same lyrics, performed by the French vocalist. It maintains the integrity and grit of the original “To be honest,” but adds buzzy, dance-driven elements.
Christine and the Queens is no stranger to the dance-pop space, notably working with Charli XCX on “New Shapes” and “Gone.” However, his solo music (e.g. PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE) leans into the avant-garde space in indie pop. That’s what makes this SG Lewis remix exciting.
It’s made for sweaty concerts, or jamming out in the shower — especially the last 45 seconds. It’s for those still obsessing over the George Daniel and Charli XCX version of Caroline Polachek’s “Welcome to My Island.” For listeners looking to impress their friends at the pre-game.
To be honest, “To be honest (SG Lewis Remix)” by Christine and the Queens is for anyone who likes to dance.
Christine and the Queens will be on tour in North America this October – dates and more info below.
