Everyone loves a good underdog story.

We listen and observe a small, irrelevant being skyrocketed to success through hard work and dedication. What seems like millennia ago, Wishy released the Paradise EP in 2023, which caught everyone’s attention and garnered them as an artist to watch. After an extensive tour showcasing their incredible collaboration, the highly anticipated debut album, Triple Seven, was finally unleashed in August 2024. It received rave reviews, and the public became instant superfans of the Midwest-based quintet, embracing the fresh sounds and cathartic lyrics everyone craved. Unbeknownst to us, Wishy was far from finished.

Within months, they dropped “Planet Popstar,” an outtake from previous recording sessions. It’s a solid yet luminous track featuring signature riffs and a shoegaze feel, making sense as to why this could have possibly been part of the album. It was a pleasant surprise for listeners who were still craving more, but little did we know this was the title track for the new EP appropriately titled Planet Popstar (out April 25, 2025 via Winspear). With this major announcement, Wishy also dropped the opening track, “Fly.”

Planet Popstar - Wishy
Planet Popstar – Wishy
Safe to say I don’t feel good every day
Even when I contemplate
I got nothing to prove
I found a way to be grateful every day
Even when I set and wait
Knowing I gotta fly

“Fly” is quintessential Wishy. The melody floats along with ease as Nina’s angelic voice binds and transforms into itself, which you hear consistently through the band’s previous releases. The subtle guitar chords give the song a slight pop feel, but it still sticks to the notable ’90s-inspired sounds of bands like The Sundays, Gin Blossoms, and other icons of that decade.

“This song conveys a general theme of enjoying the present, being in love, and not taking yourself too seriously,”  Wishy’s Nina Pitchkites explains. “Kevin, Steve Marino, and I co-wrote this song around the same time we wrote the track ‘Triple Seven.’ It was one of several demos that Steve brought to the table for us to toy with.”

:: REVIEW ::

Wishy always deliver within their lyrics to heighten the emotion of an entire track, and usually deal with everyday life experiences or the past and future relationships we endure. “Fly” is a song about just being plain grateful for the gift of being alive.

The chorus, “But you say, count your blessings. Time will move along,” is a mantra that needs to be repeated.

In other words, this too shall pass, and to quit worrying, to be present.

In the scariest of present timelines, everyone should listen to Wishy. Count your blessings and find a way to stay joyous.
