I’ve been feeling a little bit different, a little bit strange
There’s this numbness inside of me
Things aren’t hitting in quite the same way
As a society who have survived an unprecedented global pandemic, it’s relatable that five years later, many of us are still reeling in its aftermath.
Feelings of directionless, disillusionment and confusion are themes that Kate Nash’s “Millions of Heartbeats” bravely confronts through her characteristically plaintive lyricism and melodic layering.
Everything you feel can just come undone
And the media supports
all the far right scum
I just want to believe
but the feeling’s not inside me
The sun has gone and so must I
Released March 14 2024, “Millions of Heartbeats” is Nash’s lead single off her heavily anticipated fifth album, 9 Sad Symphonies (out June 21, 2024 via Kill Rock Stars).
Authentic, thoughtful and classically Nash, “Millions of Heartbeats” demonstrates why this artist continues to be one of Britain’s most impactful players in the alternative singer/songwriter scene. A step away from the more cheeky, irate songs of Made of Bricks, Nash’s new release feels cinematic, bright, and more complex. This freshness is further exemplified through the natural backdrop of her accompanying vintage-Hollywood style music video.
Adhering to her trademark, playfully provoking lyrics, “Millions of Heartbeats” pleads her listeners not to give in to feelings of despair fueled by an uncertain future, polarised media and the socio-economic effects of an isolating and traumatic global pandemic.
Instead, Nash reminds us of the solidarity present in shared experience and the reassuring fact that we all exist under a unified sky. Using the poetic imagery of the sound of “millions of heartbeats,” Nash reassures us that whatever you might be feeling, she has felt it too, and recognising that we have each other is a pretty powerful thing.
But for now all we have in millions
Millions of light-years is millions and millions of heartbeats
And I think it’s worth holding on for, well don’t you oh?…
Nash has described her new release as “a song about losing your spark,” a theme that has clearly made an impact on the artist and which is evident through the maturing of Nash’s work. Whilst not losing her humorous touch (“I eat my dinner in the toilets at lunch”), Nash’s agenda is clearly much less flippant than previous releases such as “Dickhead” and “We Get On.” “Millions Of Heartbeats” endeavours to find hope in a hopeless world and this move towards more serious, personal content aligns with Nash’s assertions; “I don’t feel competitive with the industry anymore… I’m in my own league now.”
Nash explains, “It can be difficult to find hope in a world that’s constantly bombarding you with bad news, chaos and capitalism. It’s scary when you lose that spark and can’t lift yourself out of a pit. It can feel like that light you once had might never come back. The button to the song is that there’s millions of heartbeats on this planet and that’s the reason we have to try. All we have right now is earth and each other. And that’s actually a lot. So just keep trying.”
If there is one thing you should do when feeling a little lost amidst the chaos of your day, listen to “Millions of Heartbeats” to feel a little less alone, and stay tuned for Nash’s album 9 Sad Symphonies, out June 21st!
