Regret lingers like smoke in the air on “Too Soon for Sorry,” a haunting late-night confession wrapped in a haze of longing and self-destruction.
With its melancholic melodies and aching lyricism, Lucette’s latest single captures the heavy weight of unresolved emotions – the kind that hit hardest in the quiet hours before dawn. Through a soulful, seductive blend of ’90s dream pop, alternative rock, and Americana, the Canadian singer/songwriter crafts a deeply personal yet universally relatable story of missed chances and lingering ghosts, where every whispered wish and broken apology feels as raw as an open wound.

Hazy summer breeze
Drifting through the trees
And you’re on my mind
God I’m such a mess
I overthink I guess
I’m losing it this time
I wish that you were
here right now
I wish I let you in
instead of letting you down
Oh, it’s four in the morning
and too soon for sorrys
Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Too Soon for Sorry,” the third single taken off Lucette’s upcoming EP, Nice Girl from the Suburbs (out March 21st via Prairie Blue Records). Following recent singles “Back in the Blue” (featuring Mariel Buckley) and “Heading for the End,” the brooding “Too Soon for Sorry” finds Lucette (aka Lauren Gillis) dwelling in the dark, dramatic, and dreamy depths of heartache and regret as she finds herself longing for an ex in the middle of the night, her lost love lingering in both the heart and the mind despite her being the one to call things off.
“I wish that you were here right now,” she sings in the song’s emotionally charged chorus, her voice hot on the mic as she lets her guard down in a poignant moment of truth and vulnerability. “I wish I let you in instead of letting you down.”

All too often, we don’t know what we’ve got until it’s gone.
“‘Too Soon for Sorry’ is a classic tale of undervaluing someone while you have them,” Lucette tells Atwood Magazine. “It’s about wanting them even more in the aftermath of a breakup. Hearing their name through casual acquaintances, over cigarettes outside of the bar, and wishing they were there instead of hearing how they’re doing from a stranger.”
“I think a lot of us have been there. It’s about admitting when you’re the problem in a breakup, wishing you could fix it, but knowing it’s too soon to heal that wound, and too soon for sorrys.”
Smoking cigarettes
Someone said they met you
Down on the east side
I could’ve sworn
You’d be gone through the fourth
At least that’s what you said
I wish that you were
here right now
I wish I let you in
instead of letting you down
Oh, it’s four in the morning
and too soon for sorrys

The follow-up to Lucette’s acclaimed 2019 album Deluxe Hotel Room, the six-track Nice Girl from the Suburbs sees her at her most autobiographical, emotive, and candid – working with producer Soren Hansen (New Politics, Elle King, Sam Palladio) to create music that cuts to the core of her own humanity, intimately aching inside and out. With artists like Fiona Apple and Sheryl Crow, Pixies and Mazzy Star as her ‘north stars,’ Lucette’s latest songs combine her unapologetic, deep-diving introspections with lush, larger-than-life sounds that make even the most ordinary moments – regretting a breakup, for instance – feel extraordinary.
“I think Nice Girl From the Suburbs especially speaks to the ‘90s kid in me – pulling from that pop and alternative music with these massive choruses,” Lucette says. “It felt like the right space for me to exist in my current point of my life, like an amalgamation of everything I’ve done up to this point while also a launchpad for the next thing.”
As for the inspiration behind her songwriting, she adds, “These songs are both recognizing that dark place and recognizing that I didn’t really help myself to get out of that dark place.”
No matter what I say
You’ve heard it all a hundred times
And it’s even worse
Coming from a stranger’s eyes
No matter what I do
Even if I change
All my demons live
And they call your name

As the final echoes of “Too Soon for Sorry” fade into the quiet darkness, Lucette leaves us suspended in that restless space between longing and closure.
From its soft, atmospheric entrance to the frenzy of “searing, fuzzed out guitar wails” (her words) that mark its finale, “Too Soon for Sorry” is a spirited, soul-stirring fever dream: The kind of cathartic confessional that sends shivers down the spine, all while bringing us into the room with Lucette as she channels her pain into a passionate release.
It’s a song for late-night drives, for staring at the ceiling at 4 AM, and for the ghosts of love that refuse to be forgotten.

Smoky, soulful, and steeped in regret, “Too Soon for Sorry” lingers like an unsent message – aching, unresolved, and impossible to shake.
I wish that you were here right now
(wish that you were here)
I wish I let you in instead of letting you down
Oh (wish that you were here)
I wish that you were here right now
(wish that you were here)
I wish I let you in instead of letting you down
Oh, it’s four in the morning
and too soon for sorrys
