Heart on sleeve and soul in hand, PJ Morton’s first release of the year is a stunningly vulnerable outpouring of longing and love. Radiantly tender and intimately expressive, “Please Don’t Walk Away” is beautiful and painful all at once – a reminder that love is a bond we must continuously work at, nurture, and devote ourselves to throughout our lifetimes together.

Please Don’t Walk Away – PJ Morton
It’s never gone this far
It’s never been this bad
But I won’t let it erase the memories
Of good times; we’ve had
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
And even with everything, mm
That we’ve been going through
Ah, ah-ah, ah, ah
You never have to ask me
I still, choose you
Oh girl, mm-hmm
Please, don’t walk away
From my love, ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh (yeah)
Please, don’t walk away
From my love, mm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm

Released October 1, 2021 via Morton Records / EMPIRE, “Please Don’t Walk Away” is a moody, moving indulgence of chilling R&B and scintillating soul. Morton’s first solo release since winning the 2021 GRAMMY Award for Best Gospel Album (his third consecutive GRAMMY win in three years!) feels like an old classic, with the drums’ soft backbeat, lilting keys, sweet horns and stirring guitars creating a dreamy backdrop for the song’s heavy-hearted romantic reverie.

For Morton, this song truly comes from and speaks to the heart. “‘Please Don’t Walk Away’ is in the spirit of when men were honest and willing to be vulnerable in music,” he explains. “It came from a real place when I thought I was going to lose the love of my life. I just tapped into those feelings. And as it happens sometimes, something beautiful came from something tragic.”

I hope you can heart my heart
I hope it’s speaking cleatly, mm-hmm, mm-hmm
I don’t wanna be apart
I just want you near me, oh no, no, ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh

The title sets the scene, but Morton’s emotional lyrics and sentimental vocal performance tell the real story of love and heartbreak, connection and redemption. He captures, so simply and yet so eloquently, the power of that magic spark: How our loved one heals us and makes us better than we could possibly imagine, and leaves us in a state of disrepair when they’re not around. That’s all it is: When you’re truly better together, you fight to keep it that way.

A modern day classic, “Please Don’t Walk Away” radiates with a timeless passion. Hopefully it’s the beginning of many more PJ Morton love songs to come as we head into the fall.
