Soft strums of acoustic guitar precede a calm, soft spoken voice. There is a warm ambiance present, comforting in its familiarity. But the voice sings with a slight hesitation. Something feels disquieting. Something is “Lost.”
I’ve got her name
I’ve got her face and all these things
But I don’t know what’s in her dreams
It’s lost to me
How many of us have been told we look like a family member? It’s a weirdly relatable experience. So much of our identity is wrapped up in where we came from whether we like it or not. Exploring one’s own identity can bring a sense of solace and validation while inversely (or even simultaneously) it can create confusion or shame – it’s a deeply complex feeling.
Exploring complicated emotions is nothing new for indie rock singer/songwriter Sophie Allison, AKA Soccer Mommy. The Tennessee-based artist gained notoriety with a compelling and uniquely crafted brand of songwriting. Allison’s music is known for being deeply personal, the singer exploring feelings of intimacy, regret, and failed connection.
Bravely transparent about her mental health struggles, Soccer Mommy’s raw approach to songwriting proved to be evocative and relatable, crafting an avenue of relatability between her and her fans. Once again expounding on feelings derived from her personal experience, Soccer Mommy’s newest single “Lost” finds the singer/songwriter detailing yet another sensitive subject: Her relationship with her mother.
I’ve got a way
Of keeping her with me where I go
But how she feels I’ll never know
It’s lost to me
Lost in a way that don’t make sense
Lost in a way that never ends
If I had another chance
I’d ask her then
I’d ask her then
Allison has been open about her mother’s relationship in the past, often citing the inspiration she has garnered from their positive relationship.
On “Lost,” Allison eloquently co-opts the intricacies of her relationship with her mother in a way that is simple yet multi-faceted and slightly surreal. “I’ve got her face and all these things,” Allison states, seeing some of her mother in herself, but at the same time feels as if she owes her mother.
The repeated refrain of “Lost” displays versatility, a different meaning unraveling with each listen. Perhaps Sophie’s views on life are lost and she needs her mother, or her view of her mother as a person is misguided. Maybe the relationship between the two of them has been strained somehow. Soccer Mommy’s message carries multiple meanings and, as any great story does, finds merit in its compound messaging.
I’ve got her name
I’ve got her picture in a frame
But I don’t give her anything
And I never did
Oh what a nerve
Asking for more and more of her
She’d give until there’s nothing left
If I wanted it
“If I had another chance, I’d give her this,” Allison sings, tying an emotional bow on top of an eloquent experience. Musically, “Lost” has plenty to offer. The raw, stunning, and multi-faceted storytelling is enhanced by thoughtful production and a well-crafted acoustic backdrop. But it is when looking deeper into Soccer Mommy’s storytelling where the listener will find the song is much more – a tender, thoughtful gift from daughter to mother and a new benchmark for Soccer Mommy.
Lost in a way that don’t make sense
Lost in a way that never ends
If I had another chance
I’d give her this
“Lost” is Sophie Allison’s first major single since the release of her successful 2022 album, Sometimes Forever. Contrasting that album’s nostalgic, classic rock sensibilities, Allison is pursuing a more intimate approach in her new music. Her most recent tour, “The Lost Shows,” features a reduced version of Soccer Mommy where Allison is premiering new music with little more than a solo guitar.
Proving her versatility as an artist, “Lost” finds Allison returning to her roots and expounding on her already refined acoustic presence, an exciting prospect for old-school fans as it could indicate even more beautiful music to come.
