A tender tempest of stirring sound and intense emotion, Euan Blackman’s latest single is a touching alt-folk outpouring from the depths of the soul. Life isn’t always easy, and a house isn’t always a home: Sometimes, your dwelling feels like more of a haunted house than it does a safe space or a source of comfort, compassion, and relaxation. Intimate, vulnerable, and sweetly ethereal, “I’m Not Scared” channels our anxiety-fueled nights into a beautiful eruption of connection, reflection, belonging, and self-discovery.

I’m Not Scared – Euan Blackman
I don’t wanna hear your voice
Or even see your face
I feel something I can’t explain
When I walk through this place
There’s whispering in the walls
And there’s shouting down the hall
But I don’t wanna go back home
I just wanna feel alone
It’s haunted but I just don’t care
I’m not scared

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “I’m Not Scared” (featuring Cooza), Euan Blackman’s first single of the year and his fourth overall song release. Since debuting last July, the Liverpool based singer/songwriter has begun to establish himself as a thoughtful weaver of compelling sound. Citing inspirations like Phoebe Bridgers and Claude Debussy, Blackman’s own music is an offshoot of indie/alternative folk, incorporating various electronic elements into the core backbone of his warm, raw vocals and vivid guitar playing.

Following the success of October’s poetic and percussive third single “HIGHHIGHHIGH” (which received praise from BBC Radio 1 DJ Jack Saunders, and has to date achieved over 10,000 global streams), “I’m Not Scared” comes to life as a hushed and aching confessional. Blackman reckons with his own demons as he tries to get over a lost relationship and regain his balance – and in turn, rediscover himself. “But I don’t wanna go back home – I just wanna feel alone,” he sings over colorfully cascading lead guitars and a driving backbeat. “It’s haunted but I just don’t care; I’m not scared.

I felt a premonition
As I walked in the room
I’m not one for superstition
But I swear something did move
Is this the place
She gave herself away to some new face?
But I don’t wanna go back home
I just wanna feel alone
It’s haunted but I just don’t care
I’m not scared

“‘I’m Not Scared’ is mainly about overcoming living in a less-than-ideal housing situation, and dealing with the anxiety-fueled-nights,” Blackman tells Atwood Magazine. “I use a lot of lyrical references and notions to feeling haunted, and motifs of a haunted house.”

“When producing the track I wanted to create some real energy as the song progressed. I’m pretty proud of the blend of acoustic instruments and electronic elements, especially the drums. The peak of the song is probably the outro when Cooza’s vocals interweave with the arrangement. I just DM’d him on Instagram, and a couple days later had some beautiful sounding tracks to add in.”

No I’m not scared
I don’t think I’ll ever trust
Someone again
(Someone again)
But the ghosts inside my room
And the voices in my head
I don’t wanna go back home
To my bed that I’ve outgrown
I know it’s haunted
But I just don’t care
I’m not scared

At times, “I’m Not Scared” feels as though it’s torn from the innermost pages of the artist’s diary; at other times, it feels like a charged shout-sized whisper into the foreboding ether. Euan Blackman holds nothing back in delivering what is ultimately a dazzling and cathartic rendering of his inner sanctum and his search for inner peace and tranquility. We can feel his imbalance in his words and his sounds; how he wants nothing more than to control the current chaos in his world, and to thereby find tranquility anew. (What are you running away from?
Is there some kind of problem?)
