Tora is a four-piece electronic band from Byron Bay, Australia. With only two EPs to their name, they have managed to garner international attention, performing at festivals such as the Best Kept Secret festival in the Netherlands, The Great Escape Festival in Brighton, and Glastonbury Music Festival. Their debut album Take A Rest dropped on June 9th, and the band released a slew of fantastic singles in the promotional lead up to the release of the LP.
Among those singles is “Another Case.” No matter often one listens to this track, you can still feel a sense of anticipation and excitement when the beat kicks in – a testament to the major groove and catchiness of the tune. Of the four tracks they have released so far this year, “Another Case” is perhaps the band’s most straightforward and upbeat single off Take A Rest. Their other releases such as “Amsterdam” and “Too Much” are slow burners, skewing towards a moodier atmosphere with heavier use of keys and guitars.

It’s easy to imagine the song playing in the background during the golden hour of twilight while you’re enjoying a drink with friends, and it almost inspires the heady anticipation of a night out. From the slightly pitched vocals on the chorus, to the multiple layers of synths, nothing about the track feels overworked. Everything flows seamlessly together, contributing to the slightly hypnotic quality of the track. At times, the enigmatic vocals are almost delivered in a lazy drawl, seemingly floating above the pulsating bassline and bouncy synths.
In the first fifteen seconds of the original version of the song, there are a plethora of interesting textures and sounds that tickle your ear, whetting your appetite before the vocals and the beat kick in. These little sonic tidbits continue to be scattered throughout the rest of the track, and it feels like a game of scavenger hunt for the listener trying to find and identify the sounds. Although there is a lot happening musically, the song doesn’t feel cluttered, and there is plenty of space for the individual components of the track to shine.
The accompanying music video is straightforward enough, featuring a dancer rehearsing a routine in a studio. The simplicity of the video adds to the hypnotic quality of the track, and the shots are framed in such a way that it forces the viewer to observe the sweaty dancer voyeuristically, homing in on her body parts and sensual movements. It’s not until the last few bars of the song that the perspective shifts to a higher vantage point, almost as if to intentionally incriminate the viewer who was spying on her from above the whole time.
There’s no doubt that “Another Case” will be in heavy rotation on my summer playlists for the next few months, and definitely check out Take A Rest if you’re in the market for similarly catchy gems.
