MisterWives. This is one of those bands. One of those bands that only comes along every so often, and you immediately know your musical world has just become infinitely better.
MisterWives is a full-fledged indie pop band based in New York City. Their debut full-length, Our Own House, will be available tomorrow via Photo Finish/Republic Records. The band consists of lead singer Mandy Lee Duffy, the only female in the group (hence the gang’s name), percussionist Etienne Bowler, bass guitarist William Hehir, guitarist Marc Campbell, and multi-instrumentalist Jesse Blum. Together, these five musicians create distinct, ear catching, feet tapping music. They describe themselves as indie pop, but in my opinion, they have created an entirely new wheelhouse. Their songs are remarkably unique, without losing that likeability and addictiveness that reels listeners in and transforms them into loyal fans. Their music creates a feeling of happiness, a feeling of freeness, and a feeling of youth: All feelings that are invaluable.
Lead singer Mandy Lee has a voice as mesmerizing as Ellie Goulding’s, but let’s not compare the two. The smoky echo of every note Mandy Lee hits leaves the ear wanting more. Her tone is impeccable, having the capability to jump the scale from high to low with every syllable she expresses. The band creates incredibly funky beats and melodies that urge you to dance while her voice brings in the emotion, and ultimately, the life.

“Reflections,” the title track of the band’s debut EP, holds the same capacity for epic joy that comes along with discovering the band themselves. Listen to this song first, because this is the song that made me fall in love with the band. The steady energetic percussion combined with a soulful bass, and 80’s synth-like sound creates an overwhelming feeling of joy. Mandy Lee leads the song with wispy and romantic first verse while the beat pulsates in the background, building anticipation to the chorus – a chorus that is oh so irresistible to the human ear. The instruments abruptly fall silent in the bridge, allowing Mandy Lee’s voice to break through as she builds to the final chorus. I dare you not to turn the volume up and dance – no matter where you are in the world.
