Hey, hey, I just wanna be ok

Erin Bowman’s got something to say.

Packed with the intimate, dynamic energies of a searching soul and a heart on the mend, Bowman’s songwriting is a fresh spark of light in a cold, dark room. New Jersey born, Los Angeles based, and forever yearning to find her place, Bowman strikes a nerve in her impassioned pop/rock anthem “Something to Say,” an emphatic assertion of independence full of tumult, honesty, and vulnerability.

I’m afraid they can hear it in the way I talk
Little girl, big world, guess she got lost
I’m afraid they can hear it in the way I laugh
Got off track, wrong for thinking
he was what might get me back
They got, they got something to say
But they got nothing to lose
And I guess it’s harder to laugh when the jokes on you
They got, they got something to say
But I got nothing left to give
Hey, hey, I just wanna be ok

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Something to Say,” the lead single off singer/songwriter Erin Bowman’s forthcoming debut EP Apartment 101 (independently out November 2019). Coming from a place of hurt, self-doubt, and uncertainty, “Something to Say” is Bowman’s raw confessional: An acknowledgement of her fears over life’s purpose, her career, and everything else.

“I felt like I was lost but I needed to figure it out myself,” Bowman tells Atwood Magazine. “It’s hard to be going through a tough time and have advice and comments thrown at you from every direction. I felt like people could tell I wasn’t myself and I became super aware of that and that made it worse. All I wanted was to be ok and that can take some time. In the bridge I sing, “or is this just a passing thing?” It’s been over a year since I wrote that song and I’m happy to say it turns out it was just a passing thing.”

I’m scared I can’t stand on my own 2 feet
That all my words come out
wrong every time I speak

I’m scared of the things I couldn’t say today
And I’m scared that being scared
is what’s getting in my way
They got, they got something to say
But they got nothing to lose
And I guess it’s harder to
laugh when the jokes on you

They got, they got something to say
But I got nothing left to give
Hey, hey, I just wanna be ok

Bowman’s heartfelt honesty is addictive: She tears viciously into herself with youthful energy and vigor, rising like a tidal force as electric guitars churn and strings stir with great emotion. The beautiful raucous in “Something to Say” is reminiscent, to certain degrees of lauded singer/songwriters (and pop phenomenons in their own right) Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne, and KT Tunstall – each of whom has been known for spilling their own hearts onto the page. “I guess it’s harder to laugh when the joke’s on you,” Bowman laments in kind in her chorus, ending on the important, final message: “Hey, hey, I just wanna be okay.”

Late night sitting up in my bed
Sipping wine thats gone to my head
Am I who I am because of you?
Or is this just a passing thing
Late night July will the phone ring?
Am I holding out for your words
or am I just trying to get through?

Whilst self-doubt plays a pivotal role throughout “Something to Say,” Bowman’s anthem instills an infectious warmth and resilience in its listeners: The song’s raw verve glows brighter than the sorrow that spurred it, making this a perfect get up and go / seize the day song for those looking to inject a fire in their life.
