Stream: “Your House” – Inhaler
Dublin-hailing band Inhaler is back and undoubtedly at the top of their game.
With the announcement of their third studio album, due to be released February 7th, the four lads have begun the teasing roll-out by dropping “Your House,” an anthemic, pop-rock, gospel declaration of chasing a destructive love. Produced by none other than Kid Harpoon, the song is a welcome invitation into this new sonic landscape by the band.
When it comes to what distinguishes a good band from a great band, it comes down to how well a group can continue to incorporate new ideas into their work and do so convincingly and authentically. When a band can constantly evolve it proves their excellence as it exemplifies depth in understanding of their craft.
Inhaler, as it turns out, is one of these truly great bands. They may be comfortable being labeled as indie-pop with a rock edge, but that doesn’t keep them from exploring elements of everything from country blues to ’70s pop/rock in each new project. Evidently, their third album Open Wide is shaping up to be another success if “Your House” is anything to go by.
The song is reminiscent of the likes of T. Rex’s “Shock Rock” and “20th Century Boy,” as well as, elements of “Digital Bath” by Deftones. It comes in with a thudding baseline that’s soon engaged with by lead singer, Elijah Hewson. His clear vocals cut through clearly and strike a nonchalantly sincere chord. He begs to crawl into the crevices of his love’s life and make a home there, and better yet, he assures stability – “I’m going nowhere, you won’t find me.” The track builds expectantly with the welcome intrusion of the House Gospel Choir, which adds sparks to the ‘70s influence flame the four boys seem to love to incorporate so dearly into their work.
Something Inhaler do exceedingly well is the balance of lyrical detail. We’ve seen it in “Dublin in Ecstasy” and “When it Breaks” in how they are able to illustrate vivid scenes and landscapes with just enough necessary information and description to effectively communicate without getting too specific. They do it again with “Your House,” which adds to the song’s appeal and relatability. And proves the young band’s expert understanding of music.
And there’s gold in the sky
In the city, we tried
Shining East of your face
Thought you’d
Aim at her gates
Thought there’s nothing to say
With “Your House,” Inhaler flex their crafting muscles as the song builds wonderfully. Between the built-in tension written in the lyrics and the push and pull brought by the baseline’s yearning interaction with Hewson’s vocals, the choir, and surrounding instrumentation, there isn’t a bit of the track that comes off as overdone or dull. Each line flows into the next, exhibiting the band’s care to ensure that each word was intentional and worked with the instrumentation.
And while, as a fan of the rest of their discography, from early works like “I Want You” to “Cheer Up Baby” and more, this song is an exciting new addition to the band’s catalog as it shows a new balance between their ability to make a smashing anthem that works beautifully live and sounds great on a studio album. “Your House” is indicative of a new maturity and growth in the purpose of Inhaler as a band. It proves that they are more than just another indie band that bangs out some hits and draws an impressive crowd, it shows that they are capable of melding new ideas with a factor that is just so niche-ly their own.
Oh, love
I’m going nowhere you won’t find mе
Maybe I sold love
For what it’s worth on the street
Saying, “Oh-oh, lovе
There ain’t a sharp enough knife
To cut me out of your life
I’m going to your house tonight”
Briefly put, “Your House” is a pleasant slight departure from Inhaler’s norm.
Anthemic and yearning, this is a track that pays its respects to classics while bringing in that golden touch of something new that just works so well.
Inhaler truly bring a breath of fresh air to music with this new track and with it, they leave open an intriguing door to their upcoming album that’s coincidentally Open Wide.
