Washington’s newly minted Jenner Fox Band invite us to sit still, to breathe, and to notice what we’ve been missing in “Right Away” – the intimate fourth single off their upcoming debut album, and a warm, quietly disarming track that brings us back to the present one breath, one creak, one heartbeat at a time.

There’s a strange ache that comes with absence – not the absence of people or places, but of presence itself.

We move through the world in half-focus, our bodies here while our minds wander somewhere else: to-do lists, what-ifs, the weight of everything unspoken. Dogs bark. Birds cheep. Water drips. Doors creak. Life keeps happening, steady and indifferent, while we’re caught somewhere in between. Lovers change, and we keep passing them by.

Sometimes, we forget to notice the way the light hits the floor, or how the wind shifts just before rain. And sometimes, all it takes is a quiet sound, a familiar voice, a single line of melody, to pull us gently back into the moment – to remind us we’re still here.

Such is the power of “Right Away,” a warm and quietly disarming song that brings us back to the present – not by demanding our attention, but by patiently earning it. With only thirty words and a world of feeling, Jenner Fox Band invite us to sit still, to breathe, and to notice what we’ve been missing. Intimate, present, and unadorned, they draw us out of our distractions and into the here and now – one breath, one creak, one heartbeat at a time.

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Right Away,” the fourth single from the Jenner Fox Band and the latest release off their upcoming debut album, Anything (out May 9 via The Thumb Records). The Bellingham, Washington-based group — comprised of singer/songwriter Jenner Fox, guitarist Jeremy Elliott, lap steel and dobro player Benji Nagel, bassist Aaron Moore, and multi-instrumentalist Aaron Guest, — introduced themselves this past January with the spiritually cleansing “Heart Tattoo,” and have been releasing new music each month ever since. Arriving on the heels of March’s four-track Knick Knack EP (an early look at what’s to come), “Right Away” shines a spotlight on the band’s synergy, showcasing both their instrumental finesse and their vocal harmonies on full display.

For Fox, the new band arrives on the ten-year anniversary of his entrance into the music scene, and follows The Moon that Moves the Sea — a collaborative album he and guitarist Jeremy Elliott released last year. Though Anything marks their official debut as the Jenner Fox Band, this group of longtime friends and collaborators have been playing together for years. Their musical chemistry runs deep, and it shows — not only in the songs themselves, but in the care and closeness with which they were made. “In June, Jeremy, Benji, Aaron(s), and I spent five days making an album in the woods by a river at Sage Arts [in Arlington, Washington],” Fox shared back in January. “It’s our first effort officially as ‘Jenner Fox Band!’” That sense of togetherness radiates throughout Anything, a record born not just of songs, but of shared moments, mutual trust, and a deep love for the process.

It feels fitting that “Right Away” was the first song the band laid down at Sage Arts; It’s a gentle, grounding entry point into Anything — one that reflects the spirit of deep connection and presence that defined those five days in the woods. As Fox recalls:

“‘Right Away’ was the first song we tracked during our five days of recording live to tape. I chose to record live in part because our band is at its best when all the melodic instruments are in conversation: Leaving space for each other, reacting, and finishing ideas.”

“For me, the way the instruments stagger their entrance into ‘Right Away’ exemplifies that kind of deep listening and happy coincidence. It breathes. Lyrically, ‘Right Away’ feels nursery rhyme-y: ‘Dogs bark, birds cheep, lovers change, and I keep, passing you by.’ There are only thirty individuals words in the song. There are not enough words to hide behind.”

To pass someone by is to miss them in motion — to glimpse their presence without ever truly arriving in it.

It’s a feeling of closeness tinged with distance, of almost-connection suspended in time.

With “Right Away,” the Jenner Fox Band capture that subtle ache with warmth, grace, and an open-hearted vulnerability that feels as timeless as it is timely. There’s a quiet magic in the way they play together — in how each instrument listens, breathes, and responds — and if this track is any indication, Anything promises to be a soul-stirring, spirit-settling debut worth savoring from start to finish.
