Rarely do we as fans get a first-person point-of-view of an artist struggling to understand their own thoughts and emotions, but when we do, we must appreciate the bravery of presenting one’s inner monologue with the world for judgement and repute.

Willing to Trust” is an emotionally revealing single from Kid Cudi’s new album, Enterglactic, that shows a vulnerable leap of faith from the ‘lonesome stoner’ rapper.

It’s the day I’ve been waitin’ for
And I’m settin’ the scene
Your touch paralyzes me in the mornin’ and
I don’t want you to go
Sincerely yours, forevermore
And teach me what I should know
And I count on you, show me something new, honey
I been willing to trust someone…
Yeah, if we ain’t got trust, we ain’t got nothin’
Is this really love, what it’s becomin’?
Funny how we turned into somethin’
Say you wasn’t even lookin’ for a boyfriend
Don’t need new friends, that shit so confusin’
Left your ex, thought you’d
never trust a man again

Don’t take it out on me, nah
Don’t do me dirty, let’s make this worth it

His first album since the trilogy-fulfilling Man on the Moon III, Cudi brings his fans into a private arena of his life that we seldom get to experience. This album is exciting because for the first time, Cudi’s fans are allowed to go on this journey of self-discovery with the once reserved artist.

Entergalactic, and its accompanying Netflix movie, is a story about a lonely rapper finally opening himself up to the emotions that accompany a relationship: Heartbreak, regret, and hate.

Yet, Cudi discovers that there is still a foundation built on love. Going through the different states of mind that love creates is the basis of Kid Cudi’s tenth studio album.

This song is a journey through the mind of an anxious musician, as we are introduced to a love interest for the first time.

Cudi has written about the quintessential love story before. What makes this song unique is the candid underpinning that we feel behind the lyrics and meaning of the album.

The “Pursuit of Happiness” rapper has always been open about his life in many ways. His drug usage, mental health, feelings about the world, and more. Yet, we have never seen the rapper face his own insecurities in such a vulnerable way.

With “Willing to Trust,” it feels as if the song is simply the thoughts going through Cudi’s mind as he tries to give himself the confidence to trust someone else. In many ways, this song feels private and diaristic, but there’s something so familiar that we can all relate to.

Towards the chorus, we see a shift from inner monologue to something that Cudi can comfortably say out loud: “I been willing to trust someone. And I’ve been willing to trust someone. And I’ve been willing to trust someone… Is this really love, what it’s becoming?

Simple lyrics, repeated over and over, like a nagging gut feeling that won’t go away. A mantra that Cudi repeats as he’s pondering the notion that maybe one day, just maybe, he might materialize these internal thoughts and say them out loud.

And I’ve been willing to trust someone…
And I’ve been willing to trust someone…
And I’ve been willing to trust someone…
And I’ve been willing to trust someone…
I got you, don’t worry, love (oh, hold on me)
I got you, don’t worry, love (oh, just lay with me)
I got you, don’t worry, love (oh, you’re so sweet)
I got you, don’t worry, love (right here is where I’ll be)

Backed by an echoing, earworm of a bass, and accompanied by a whirring guitar, this song becomes addicting on first listen. Cudi recently revealed “Willing to Trust” to the world in a beautiful performance including Ty Dolla $ign on the The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The full album was released on September 30th by Republic Records.
