I’m done writing songs about you If you don’t count this one…

This really is an anthem for getting it all out – in song, and in your therapist’s office.

After all, nothing beats having a neutral third party to talk with about your problems  – nothing, except songwriting, that is. Music is a form of (admittedly unlicensed) therapy, after all. So Kat Rhapsody wrote about both!

The resulting track hits hard and leaves a lasting mark as Rhapsody and their bandmates leave it all on the field, spilling their guts in a moment of reflection, reckoning, and hard-won healing. Their latest spirited single of the year, the aptly-titled “Therapy” is a feverish, super-charged eruption of high energy and raw emotion that leaves us exhilarated, energized, and inspired.

I hope by now
You’ve had the time
Did you make some time
To finally talk to someone?
Cause you got it out
You got it all out of your system
You got it out all over me
and him and her and them and… me!

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Therapy,” the latest single off Kat and the Hurricane’s forthcoming debut studio album Got It Out (independently out October 4, 2024). Active in one way or another since 2017, Madison, Wisconsin’s Kat and the Hurricane have long been a vessel of unfiltered, unapologetic self-expression. The all-queer and trans trio – consisting of guitarist/vocalist Kat Rhapsody (they/them), keyboardist/vocalist Benjamin Rose (they/them), and drummer Alex Nelson (they/them) – have been living up to that description and more as of late, with a deluxe version of their 2020 EP Libra and brand new single “Caffeine & Alcohol” highlighting their seductive synth rock/indie pop sound as well as Rhapsody’s evocative storytelling abilities.

“Therapy” is a tight three-minute eruption of pop/rock passion that the band proudly describe as loud, defiant, brash, joyful, chaotic, and self-declamatory – calling it “dad rock for girlypops – a gay Weezer, if you will.” A simultaneous ode to songwriting and speaking to someone, the song hinges on the idea of “getting it out” – the it being whatever pent-up emotions you may be holding onto – through some kind of cathartic vessel. The song’s chorus provides a spectacular moment of relief and release:

We got it out
We got it out almost completely
We got it out with what we like to call
THERAPY!

“‘Therapy’ was written in a bedroom in Madison, Wisconsin during the early days of the pandemic (2020) when there wasn’t much else to do except to think and write,” Kat Rhapsody tells Atwood Magazine.  “At the time, having recently established therapy with a care provider, I was feeling inspired by the benefits of using therapy as a tool to work through feelings I hadn’t quite processed yet. I fiddle with my guitar searching for the right chord progression and I find myself repeating phrases of ‘got it out‘ and the next thing I know, I’m writing a song with a person in mind that I thought I was done writing songs about. I guess I was able to squeeze one more out – it is, after all, the only positive takeaway from that relationship. Weezer meets The Front Bottoms meets an almost video game style intro.”

They add, “I wrote this having only been in therapy for a few months. I was nowhere near where I wanted to be emotionally, but where did anyone want to really be emotionally during the unfolding of a pandemic in our living memory? This is a fun song to play and sing, and we’ve all seen that the Internet loves singing about serious topics with a tongue-in-cheek sound to accompany it.”

“I hope people can use this song to sing at the top of their lungs and feel like they got something off their chest at the end of it. Then? Rinse and repeat.”
