We never intended to be a band, but the songs came so naturally and quickly.

British band NANCY never meant for any of this to happen – but sometimes, life has a way of deciding things for us. A kinetic energy ripples through the North London duo’s music, bringing waves of heartwrenching emotion to life in their latest single, “It’s Just You.”

It’s Just You – Nancy

Why can’t I face you again
I’m just too tired to pretend
I’m a little more drunk,
than I wanted to be

There’s a little too much,
that I don’t want you to see
Don’t come here
Don’t tell me it’s hard
Just leave me
I just need a little more time

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “It’s Just You,” the latest single and first studio release from UK act NANCY. Having previously released a four-track live EP Three Birds in 2018, the musical pairing of Natalia and Freddie are returning after three years and a brief hiatus to wash listeners in a pool of raw, hauntingly beautiful indie rock music.

“We never intended to be a band, but the songs came so naturally and quickly,” NANCY tell Atwood Magazine. “We met in a writing session, that was set up for one of our own solo projects. But we both instantly connected musically and were both in a similar place as artists, where we were feeling like we were looking for inspiration and for a change. We wrote so much material so quickly, and had such a connection to the songs that we knew the music had created its own world, inspired by film, especially Tarantino and gothic horrors.”

Such a filmic quality can certainly be felt in the band’s achingly emotional stripped-down songs from 2018, and it resonates even stronger in the fully-produced “It’s Just You.” Armed with little more than guitars, light drums, and Natalia’s vocals, NANCY deliver a breathtakingly intimate performance full of magnificent weight. “It’s just you I’m waiting on,” Natalia croons in a brief and piercing falsetto; the chorus may not last long, but in its short time it captures a raw, magnetic urgency.

“We wrote ‘It’s Just You’ in the heart of our North London flat,” the band explain. “This song is about letting someone know that you’re not always looking for advice or some way to be fixed. Sometimes you just need the people closest to you, to just believe in you.”

Sometimes you just need the people closest to you, to just believe in you.

Take over, step in to my place
The spotlights on all of my mistakes
You know how that feels
I know you don’t mean no harm
Don’t want to be healed
Just hold me in your arms
Don’t come here
Don’t tell me it’s hard
Just leave me
I just need a little more time

NANCY build to dynamic crescendos with learned strength, wielding sound like a weapon and using every inch of the sonic landscape to their advantage: Natalia roars, she’s backed by a compelling mix of pained instruments. When her voice drops off, those same sonics keep the song building and growing; and when things go silent at the song’s end, our emotions come to an equally heartfelt standstill: Suddenly, there’s nothing left between our ears and Natalia’s voice ringing in our ears, reminding us one more time that “it’s just you I’m waiting on.

Currently based in London and Berlin (where Freddie is from), NANCY worked with producer Noah Booth (Ratboy) to bring “It’s Just You” into the world. Though little is yet known about the still-emerging pair, their enchanting music and alluring delivery easily make them an artist to watch moving forward.
