Premiere: Rose Cousins Enthralls with Scenic & Stirring “The Lullaby (My Oldest Love)”

JUNO Award-winning songwriter Rose Cousins proves she is an artist with an undeniable strong vision with the video for “The Lullaby (My Oldest Love),” taken off her new album ‘Bravado’.

You can always rely on nature to provide much-needed solace. In our increasingly hectic lives, exploring the wilderness can free our headspace, allowing us to appreciate what’s truly important. For others, music can provide that level of comforting escapism. With the video for “The Lullaby (My Oldest Love),” Grammy-nominated and JUNO Award-winning songwriter Rose Cousins makes incredible use of magnificent scenery to heighten the emotion embodied within her music.

The day is gone
You played it wrong
You’re the only one who knows
So close the light
Call the fight
Pull your mind back inside
You’re just tired

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the music video for “The Lullaby (My Oldest Love),” taken from Rose Cousins’ recently released album Bravado (out February 21 via Outside Music). Much like the track itself, the video is stunningly beautiful. Shot in Western Newfoundland, Canada, by Yanick Lesperance (Quebec) and Tom Cochrane (Corner Brook, NL), the isolation depicted in the video manages to perfectly complement the song’s lyrical sentiment.

It’s hard to see
Hard to believe
Our body brings us all we need
Let go to sleep
My oldest love
You’re the only one who feels it all

The tranquil isolation that the grandeur of the wilderness depicted in Cousins’ video offers serves as a direct and powerful counterpoint to the haunting isolation that many can feel burdened by. The interconnectedness of nature depicted within the video almost serves as poignant reminder how interdependent we are all are. The stunning drone work also emphasizes the vastness of our natural environment, emphasizing that even the biggest of problems and doubts are nothing in comparison to the sheer scale of the planet we occupy.

Speaking of the video, Cousins tells Atwood Magazine, “This time last year Tim Baker (Hey Rosetta!) and I met up to write and in our first moments of catching up with each other, we connected in a place of deep acknowledgement and empathy of how hard we are on ourselves. There’s already so much vulnerability in creating a thing, music, art, whatever and following the desire to share it and connect, yet, we put ourselves through a mental gauntlet each time.”

She continues, “As well, I was telling him about a book I was reading about sleep and how when we are in our deepest rest, our brain decides for us what information is important and kept and what information gets discarded; our sleeping selves watching out for us.  We kind of smashed all of these thoughts and feelings into this song, ‘The Lullaby (My Oldest Love),’ a much-needed reminder to oneself to be inwardly kind and that everything will be ok.”

Through this video and her recent album, Cousins manages to thoroughly examine what it means to be lonely. She investigates the heart-aching exploration that comes to the forefront of your mind when you’re truly alone with poignancy and grace. Within that introspection, she navigates through indescribably difficult emotions that are incredibly personal, and yet the resultant music is at times heartbreakingly relatable.

We walk around
All hollowed out
Fill our cups with fear and doubt
Oh ghosts of sleep
Wash me clean
Show me what I ought to keep
And what must leave
Oh set me free
My oldest love
You’re the only one who feels it all
My oldest love
You’re the only one who can heal it all

With Bravado, Rose Cousins has proven that, despite the streaming age, artists can still delicately craft bodies of work that are cohesive and meaningful.
