“Fallin’ Back” – Solomon Fox ft. Amaria

There’s a dangerous kind of comfort in falling back into someone’s arms – even when you know how the story ends.

Solomon Fox bottles that temptation in “Fallin’ Back,” a velvet-smooth R&B and neo-soul duet with Amaria that lingers in the muddled space between moving on and giving in.

Written and produced entirely in Fox’s bedroom studio, the track is rooted in a real-life cycle he couldn’t quite escape.

“I had one ex in particular where we kept just going through this cycle of ending things and then getting pulled back into the whirlwind,” he says. “This was inspired by her and one of those many nights.”

Touring together earlier this year, Fox knew Amaria could deliver the perfect counterpoint: “She could probably add to almost any track, but this one felt like a perfect match.”

Compared to the boundary-pushing, genre-bending work he’s crafted for Duckwrth, Smino, and Thundercat, “Fallin’ Back” feels stripped-down and intimate – more about emotional resonance than sonic flash. It’s a turning point for Fox as he steps out from behind the scenes, trading experimental complexity for unguarded storytelling.

The single offers the first glimpse of Sweettooth, Fox’s entirely self-produced debut album (set for release in October 2025) which chronicles the highs, lows and detours of one transformative relationship.

Fox was up for a quick Q&A to talk about cycles of love, late-night creation and what Sweettooth reveals about the art of letting go… and holding on.

A CONVERSATION WITH SOLOMON FOX

Fallin' Back - Solomon Fox

Atwood Magazine: “Fallin’ Back” lives in that blurry space between moving on and slipping back. Was there a moment or experience in your own life that inspired that feeling?

Solomon Fox: Yes, definitely at least one haha. I had one ex in particular where we kept just going through this cycle of ending things and then getting pulled back into the whirlwind when we saw each other. So, this was inspired by her and one of those many nights.

You wrote and produced the whole thing in your bedroom. How did being in that personal space shape the vibe of the song?

Solomon Fox: I love working in my home studio because it’s a lot more intimate and I feel more free to experiment without anyone else around. Also, I’m often working at insane hours so it’s great to just be able to put ideas down as they come.

Amaria’s voice blends with yours like two sides of the same diary entry. What made her the perfect match for this track?

Solomon Fox: Amaria is amazing. She could probably add to almost any track, but this one in particular felt like a good match to have another perspective on the same emotion. And we toured together this spring so I knew I could trust her to get into this pocket really well.

Which instrument on this track is your favorite to play, and what’s the story there?

Solomon Fox: Hard to pick but on this track, I think the bass was the most fun because I think its bounce sort of sets the tone of the whole song.

What’s one random or unexpected thing you were doing between takes while making “Fallin’ Back?”

Solomon Fox: Haha probably mainly just talking to my instruments like they’re humans and asking them to play nice things. Or maybe playing Wii Sports Resort.

If “Fallin’ Back” played during a late-night movie scene, what would we be watching?

Solomon Fox: Oooh, I like this question. I feel like it’s a rom-com and this would be playing on the radio in the car during the scene when the ex comes back into the picture to convince the main character to give her a ride home. And maybe they get back together or maybe they don’t but either way the other woman finds out about it and it messes everything up.

When you listen back to “Fallin’ Back” now, what’s the one moment in the song that still gives you chills?

Solomon Fox: I think the bridge when we switch up the chords and it sort of slides into another dimension for a little. It feels unexpected but when it comes back to the hook I think it pulls everything together and that moment always feels really special to me.

This is our first taste of your upcoming album Sweettooth. How does “Fallin’ Back” hint at what’s coming?

Solomon Fox: Most of the album revolves around the different phases of this same relationship so “Fallin’ Back” is one chapter of that story. The album ranges from love to heartbreak with lots of side quests and detours in between.

Your album’s called Sweettooth — what’s your real-life guilty-pleasure sweet?

Solomon Fox: Oh man, I grew up in a house with no candy which I think backfired because I am now a literal sugar addict. But my go-to would probably be Sour Patch watermelon or this Thai gelato spot near my house.

You’ve had love from Queen Latifah, Erykah Badu and Ty Dolla $ign. Which one left you the most starstruck?

Solomon Fox: I’m still so in awe of any and all attention to be honest, but one of my favorites was Jill Scott because she is probably one of my favorite singers ever so that felt really unreal that she was listening.
