Sydney-based DIY pop artist AIRPORTS wants to know if “U FEEL IT 2” in his thought-provoking new single. Opening up the conversation on whether someone or something makes us feel liberated or confined, the duality of the song allows for listeners to find a mutual level of meaning. Built upon colliding synthscapes, hypnotic beats and celestial harmonies, the dreamy single delivers a laid-back vibe. Referencing the contrasting feelings and emotions that can possess you, AIRPORTS explains further, “It started out being written as a song about a haunting relationship with depression in contrast to uplifting music, but when some of the lyrics started to spill out I realised I was also writing about positive romantic feelings for my partner. At that point I was emotionally overwhelmed and realised this song has a great dualism.”

AIRPORTS is the moniker of singer, songwriter, producer and engineer Aaron Lee. With his hands in multiple pies, he is able to stay true to his sound, landing him the title of an “independant pop force to be reckoned with.” Lee is also known for his work with major brands, labels and artists, creating an impressive resume which has been raising the eyebrows of fans and critics alike. Atwood Magazine had the pleasure of catching up with AIRPORTS and hearing about his time in isolation, working with Multi platinum JPOP groups and his go-to snack!

We been falling fast in slow mo
Try to walk away but it don’t go
Thinking that I can’t let go and
I know you feel it too.

A CONVERSATION WITH AIRPORTS

U Feel It 2 - AIRPORTS

Atwood Magazine: Congratulations on the release of ''U FEEL IT 2.'' The single is just one of many from your recent slew of releases - does it feel different with each track?

AIRPORTS: Thank you so much! Very different, it’s definitely more ‘sunny’ and easier-listening than my previous releases (which were darker / slightly more hip hop). I think I’m really finding my “pop-sound” in between all the genres I grew up making (punk, hip hop, EDM).

How has the current status of the world had an effect on your releases and how are you maintaining to connect with your fans?

AIRPORTS: The moment I started releasing music this year was the moment the world went into isolation, but it’s been a blessing in disguise (for instance the music video for “U FEEL IT 2” wouldn’t have come out so beautifully if it were not for isolation). It’s also been a challenge that’s kept me working harder at finding ways to connect with people.

Wasting time,
Just chasing highs,
Here in my room.
Take my pride,
My faults & lies,
Cos I’m never alone when I’m with you

With more time spent at home, has it had a positive change on your creativity, with more time to focus on music or has it had the opposite effect?

AIRPORTS: My life didn’t change much to start with because I live and work full time from my home studio anyway, haha. But I’ve enjoyed the sudden shift in social dynamic, it kicked me into gear that little bit more.

You have been compared to the likes of LANY, Troy Sivan and Lauv - if you could collaborate with any artist dead or alive, who would it be and why?

AIRPORTS: Love those artists but I would have to pick Michael Jackson hands down. Work ethic, creativity, innovation.. he’s the GOAT.

As well as your solo project, you have also worked on award winning projects for TV, brands (Coca-Cola, Fanta), labels (Universal Music, Capitol Records), artists and performers, including Multi platinum JPOP groups. How does it feel to have been a part of such successful campaigns and projects and do you have a favorite to work on?

AIRPORTS: I really love being part of fun songs and projects, especially when they go far! But nothing makes me more fulfilled than doing my own project. That’s why this year I’ve prioritised AIRPORTS.

What would be your dream venue to perform at?

AIRPORTS: I feel like the typical answer would be “Madison Square or Red Rocks”, but right now I’m really excited by the idea of playing full but small venues where there’s more connection and energy.

So I haven’t really thought about a dream venue before!

What is your go to isolation meal?

AIRPORTS: Unfortunate for my health, but it’s been Sour Patch Kids candy.

What's next for AIRPORTS? Can we expect an EP or album in the near future?

AIRPORTS: More regular single releases are in the pipeline, and they only get better!
